Lucy Hurston Book Discussion & Reading

In mid-April, the entire city will embark upon a city read of Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” as part of D.C.’s Big Read, an initiative to encourage the reading of classic literature. Since 1990, the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation has been at the forefront of preserving the legacy of Hurston and what she means to American Literature. As part of D.C.’s Big Read, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, in partnership with the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, will host a book discussion with Lucy Anne Hurston, niece of Zora Neale Hurston, on Friday, April 20 in the great hall of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library located at 901 G St., NW at 10 a.m. Lucy Anne will discuss her book “Speak, So You Can Speak Again”. The book presents a vivid portrait of Zora, from her unique childhood to her many professional accomplishments and personal stories. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Caroline Rhea, a stand-up comedian and actress, now adds talk show host to her title. With an extensive comedic background, Caroline brings a fresh, smart and spontaneous approach to the show. After filling in as a guest host 12 times during the last two seasons of The Rosie O Donnell Show,the Montreal native is no stranger to the talk/variety format. Caroline has been a regular on Hollywood Squares and starred as Aunt Hilda on The WB s Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Her innate curiosity and formidable comedic talents give her a natural ability to interview celebrities and real people alike. She continues to perform to sold-out audiences in top comedy clubs where she has honed these invaluable hosting skills for the last 11 years. In 1989, Caroline ventured to New York to study the fine art of stand-up comedy. She participated in the stand-up program at the New School of Social Research, but her ultimate training came at the comedy club, Catch a Rising Star. With nightly gigs at New York s venerable clubs, Caroline s status quickly grew and she became an integral part of the city s competitive comedy scene. Her career was further boosted by numerous appearances on MTV s Half-Hour Comedy Hour, Comic Strip Live and Caroline s Comedy Hours. With Hollywood knocking on her door, Caroline headed for Los Angeles, where she starred with Jeremy Piven in the NBC television series, Pride and Joy. Her feature credits included working with Jim Carrey in a supporting role in Man on the Moon, the story of the late comedian Andy Kaurman, and the wrestling film, Ready to Rumble, opposite Oliver Platt, David Arquette and Scott Caan. On the small screen, Caroline has guest-starred as Drew s girlfriend on The Drew Cary Show and starred in the television movie, Mom s Got a Date with a Vampire. She appears regularly on Late Night with Conan O Brien and has also made appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central s Pulp Comic, HBO s Curb Your Enthusiasm, written by Larry David, the Ms. Foundation s Women of Comedy from Caroline s and Comic Relief 8. She has also hosted her own VH1 series, Fool for Love and Lifetime s The Great Lifetime Makeover, executive produced by Geena Davis.

Led by Artistic Director Vincent E. Thomas, award-winning VTDance builds on the use of contemporary dance, improvisation, text/movement, a variety of sound sources and collaborations with other artists. New York based INSPIRIT creates contemporary dance works with spiritual exuberance, ancestral strength and startling perception. The all female group holds a rich movement vocabulary that draws from the ensemble’s wide range of experiences, from postmodern forms to traditional West African dance, ballet to yoga. The multi-dimensional dance works that result forge a visceral and emotional connection by expressing collective hopes, struggles and truths. Performing works “with sincerity and passion” INSPIRIT’s works are “transformed by dancers who embodied positive images of African American women” (The Washington Post).
