No plan for Friday yet? Please come & join us for our TGIP Social Pool & Pizza Night. We can share some pizzas & play some friendly pool games while meeting new friends! This will be a TGIF Social Pool & Pizza Night. We have done that before & it was a lot of fun. As some of you may not have enough time to eat after work, I will order some pizzas to share. Please let me know, if you want to be included for the pizza dinner when signing in the event so that I know how much to order, it will probably cost about $7 per person. Below is the details of the event. Hope you can make it. (Please ignore the number of RSVP on the Upcoming.org site as I promote the events via multiple channels. Our social pool events usually have 20-25 people showed up): Date: Friday Aug 10th 7:00pm-10:30pm Location: Shoreline Billiards 1400 North Shoreline Blvd. #C-1, Mountain View 650-964-0780 Cost: $15/person to be collected when signing in. Ladies receive a discounted rate of $10 for this event. (About $7 additional if you would like to join us for the pizzas.) If you'd like to stay & play for longer after the event finished at 10:30pm, Shoreline offers us a $5 flat fee per person til they close at 2am, 2-4 persons per table depending on how busy the poolroom gets. RSVP: Please email me @ soyeeng@gmail.com with your FULL name, email address, number of guests (if any) with their names, phone number is optional. Although RSVP is not required, it would be helpful to let me know if ou plan on coming. I don't have email access after 4pm on Friday, so if you do decide to join us the last minute, you can simply show up or call me at 415-215-0761. How it works: 1. I would rotate people around tables every 40-45 minutes. Table assignment is random, though I would make my best effort to make sure a good gender mix per table. 2. I would try to have 4 people per table. 3. Since we would be rotating, it's less confusing if everyone plays the same rules. Game rules is available on the event date. 4. When table assignment has announced, everyone has to move to their next assigned table even if you "think" you are almost done with the game, since it's impossible for every table to finish at the same time, that way it won't slow down the table rotation for everyone. 5. If you need to leave early, please let me know 10 min before you actually leave, so I would leave your name out for next rotation. How we'll find each other: Ask for Shirley's or BAPBSC group Look forward to seeing you then. To be notified with our future pool events, go to yahoo.com, then go to "group", search for BAPBSC (Stands for Bay Area Pool, Billiards, Snooker Club), then select to join/ subscribe to the club. It is FREE to join. IMPORTANT: If you don't have Yahoo ID, please email me at soyeeng@gmail.com with your email address, I would manually add you as member. Shirley

Some code is downright scary to maintain. An all too common example are bloated service methods that do too much: manage transactions, handle security as well as implement the business rules. Changing that kind of code requires you to understand and tackle many different concerns. Code can also be difficult to maintain if the implementation of some features (e.g. audit logging) is scattered throughout the code base. Changing that kind of code involves changing many components. This talk describes how to improve your code with real objects and aspects. We show how to use AOP to simplify your code by modularizing concerns such as audit logging that are normally implemented by code that is mixed in with the business logic. We also describe how to write truly object-oriented code in Java - something which is not done as often as you might expect even though Java is an object-oriented language. We will compare and contrast a procedural design with an object- oriented design and describe the benefits of using real objects. We will also show how to refactor a procedural design into an object-oriented design — an easy way to eliminate those fat service methods and improve the design of your application. Raph Levien, founder of Advogato, will join us to discuss "Lesson from Advogato." All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Doors open at 6:30 PM; talk begins at 7:00 PM. Refreshments will be served. See the event home page for more logistical details. Talk Abstract: Lessons from Advogato Advogato is a community blog for free software developers, founded in 1999 as a testbed for ideas on attack-resistant trust metrics. The site now has 13k registered users, of whom over 3000 are ranked with one of the "Apprentice", "Journeyer", or "Master" certifications. Though I neglected the maintenance of the site for many years, it has retained an active community, and is seeing significant new life since it was handed over to the new maintainer, Steven Rainwater. By the exponential-growth standards of the dot-com boom, Advogato has been only a modest success. Yet, the experience of the site over the years contains a number of lessons. First and foremost, attack-resistant trust metrics do work. The site succeeds in being remarkably spam-free, as well as completely open to the worldwide community of free software developers, and achieves these goals without needing a huge amount of manual input to delete spammers. Thus, the main lesson is that trust metrics do work, but they need to be applied with care. Experience with the site teaches the importance of choosing and implementing the appropriate trust metric for the assumptions at hand. There is widespread "cert inflation," where many users are ranked higher than the guidelines would recommend. The trust metrics also did not bring a flow of very high quality articles to the front page. Another important lesson is that openness and transparency work. The workings of the trust metric (including the complete source code) is public. Thus, Advogato strongly refutes the prevailing wisdom that secrecy is needed for spam protection. This lesson is similar to the ineffectiveness of "security through obscurity". Lastly, I'll spend some time discussing why Advogato failed to catch fire in the public's imagination, despite its qualities. Possible factors include lack of promotion, and fact that the trust metrics were never tested against real money. Speaker Bio: Raph Levien has been active in the free software / open source community for 13 years, with a range of contributions including email crypto, 2d graphics, fonts, various components in the Gnome framework, and, for most of the last seven years, Ghostscript. Before then, he built the free software community website Advogato as a proving ground for his ideas on trust metrics and attack-resistant reputation systems. He has recently joined Google as an engineer working on combatting spam and abuse.

No plan for Friday yet? Please come & join us for our TGIF Social Pool & Pizza Night. Our social pool events usually have 20-25 people showed up): Date: Friday June 13th 7:00pm-10:30pm Location: Shoreline Billiards 1400 North Shoreline Blvd. #C-1, Mountain View 650-964-0780 Cost: $15/person to be collected when signing in. I don't have email access after 4pm on Sat, so if you do decide to join us the last minute, you can simply show up or call me at 415-215-0761. Shirley

We're excited to report that Google has offered WhereCampers space, food and a place to pitch our tents at the Googleplex Campus 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View CA on the May 17th / 18th 2008 weekend. All of us in the community would like to extend an invitation to participants from all walks of life to join us again this year at WhereCamp 2008. To talk about art, volunteered geographic information, social place sharing, emerging open source and open data licensing problems, sharing gps tracks, ubicomp, immersive reality, lidar, environmental, political and technical issues surrounding place, games, food webs, open street maps, openlayers, place hacking and whatever else catches your heart. We want to go out of our way to encourage diversity; to encourage cross-pollination of ideas in a congenial, warm and extended atmosphere within the community that we are so privileged to be a part of. Just like last year WhereCamp is the weekend after the O'Reilly Where 2.0 Conference - which itself is in Burlingame CA May 12th to 14th. What actually happens at WhereCamp this year is up to us to decide. The plan is to kick-off pretty early Saturday Morning at 9:00 AM May 17th with breakfast on campus. At 10:00 AM Saturday we'll do a call out for session ideas and collaboratively build out a session schedule for the day. Of course everybody is welcome to raise their ideas and projects for discussion. Sessions will go all day and then we circle back around 5:00 PM or so for a recap and a close. There'll be lunch and dinner and late night discussion and hacking. We have the run of a portion of the campus with projectors and white-boards as well as access to a kitchen. Everybody is welcome to stay on campus Saturday night, bring a tent! Sunday May 18th we do the same thing again; starting with hot breakfast, doing session planning for the day, doing sessions and doing a closing circle a bit earlier - around 4:00 PM and then heading home or for an off campus dinner. Everything is free including food and beer. See the WhereCamp links below for registration. Please register because it helps us plan for our food budget and for things like t-shirts and sponsor budgets. Depending on the number of registrations we may even have to cap attendance this year on a first come first serve basis. If you need ride-share or accomodations or want to post comments please see the wiki links below as well: http://wherecamp.crowdvine.com/ http://wherecamp.org Save the date! See you there! Monthly Networking Events for Silicon Valley IT/Software Development Executives. Dinner and Drinks are provided. REGISTRATION ONLY AT: http://itexec.meetup.com/32/calendar/7173956/ March topic: Implementing Swarm Agile Distributed agile software teams are commonplace with companies having several sites throughout the world. Lifestyle, environmental, and business reasons exist, though, to extend the level of distribution to a greater degree with individuals largely working at home or community centers. Swarm is a hybrid model that sets a work pattern and expectations for highly virtualized team members with embedding face-to-face sync points. It hinges on a set of team expectations and web communication capabilities supporting collaboration. This talk explores business reasoning for moving to mode of operation and explains why this represents the future for agile groups. The process and teamwork mechanisms necessary for retaining effectiveness, holding to low attrition, and keeping high velocity are presented.

Within a few months he had designed a personal job search tool, JibberJobber.com, which helps professionals manage career and job search activities the same way a salesman manages prospects and customer data. To launch your app on Orkut you need to have it pass a review by the Orkut Team, so be sure to use these best practices to build a successful app and submit your app at http://orkut-app-submission.googlemashups.com/. To help get your apps up to snuff, we'll be opening our doors here in Mountain View so you can get real time technical support and face-to-face feedback on the user experience of your app. Orkut Product Managers and Engineers will be on hand to review your application and add it to the initial Orkut application directory. Swing by the Googleplex and you'll have access to: * Workspace, power, and internet access. * Introductory materials and training. * Googlers working on OpenSocial and Orkut who can answer your questions. * Advice on how to polish your applications to get into the Orkut directory for launch. * A free lunch (they do exist!). These all-day "hackathons" will be on February 7-8 and February 14-15 at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA. If you're on the east coast, you can attend via video conference from our New York City office. There are limited seats available - reserve your spot by sending your name and preferred date and location to hackathon.rsvp@gmail.com. OpenSocial v0.7 is now live on Orkut sandbox. This is the same environment that will go live to 50M+ users worldwide. Check out the release notes for v0.7 and the updated OpenSocial Spec. Hope to see you here!

The Silicon Valley Web Developer JUG (SV-WEB-JUG) meets on the third Tuesday of the month at Google. Our meetings are always free to attend and open to the general public. Advance Registration at http://sv-web-jug.eventbrite.com is required to be part of the give-away drawing. This meeting is being co-sponsored by our sister JUG, the Silicon Valley JUG. 18:30-19:00 Arrive & mingle over food & drinks 19:00-20:30 Terracotta Presentation Within every innocent web application lies a sleeping monster. There comes a time when every successful web application outgrows its single-machine architecture. Whether for high-availability, scalability, or both, the adult web application must grow to live on more than one application server. That’s when the latent beast strikes: the State Monster. The most recent accepted wisdom about solving application state problems in a scaled-out production architecture is to make your web application “stateless”—i.e., externalize all application state out of the application tier so that any application server can serve any user request. Unfortunately for the owners of such applications, making it “stateless” is hard to do, corrupts the programming and data model of the application, and pushes the problem out to other pieces of infrastructure that are ill-equipped to handle it. Stateless programming is hard on the application developer, hard on the application infrastructure, and hard on the application. There must be a better way to write business applications. In this talk, Orion Letizi will discuss the current “stateless” application paradigm, its shortcomings, and a new alternative using Terracotta’s open-source availability and scalability technology for the Java Virtual Machine. Please be sure to preregister at http://sv-web-jug.eventbrite.com/ so you will be eligible for our raffle. Currently, the prizes include an IntelliJ IDEA license from JetBrains and the following books: Ajax Security from Adison Wesley, Pro JSF and Ajax: Building Rich Internet Components from Apress, Filthy Rich Clients from Addison Wesley (2 copies), Professional Hibernate from Wrox Press, Professional Java Development with the Spring Framework from Wrox Press, Professional Ajax 2nd Edition from Wrox Press.

No plan for Friday yet? Please come & join us for our TGIF Social Pool & Pizza Night. Our social pool events usually have 20-25 people showed up): Date: Friday Nov 20th 7:00pm-10:30pm Location: Shoreline Billiards 1400 North Shoreline Blvd. #C-1, Mountain View 650-964-0780 Cost: $15/person to be collected when signing in. I don't have email access after 4pm on Sat, so if you do decide to join us the last minute, you can simply show up or call me at 415-215-0761. Shirley

This seminar is a soup-to-nuts discussion for inventors, creators of IP, start-ups, and medium sized companies without a dedicated legal team. We'll cover the arguments for whether to seek patents and trademarks, how patents can help your company, where to look for them, and how to get them submitted and approved. Equally importantly, we'll look at what is not worth patenting and trademarking, and the right way to submit the ideas that are worth patenting. Our presenters include top-notch lawyers who will cover the details of patents and trademarks, with adequate time to answer your questions. We're also going to hear from the Venture Capital sector on how they view IP, and the importance of patents with respect to funding and company valuations. To round out our perspectives, we'll get a Case Presentation from a start-up entrepreneur who has used patents, and who has been involved in litigation around his company's IP positions. $80 for non-members.
