On September 11, 2007 from 7-9pm, Dr. Richard Superfine from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UNC– CH will be speaking about the newest advances in nanotechnology from his lab and around the world. Forums is a new discussion-based minds-on program at the Museum of Life and Science where members of the public are engaged in dialogue and deliberation around the societal and ethical implications of nanoscale science, engineering and technology. Our forums provide participants the opportunity to participate in a compelling adult experience that goes beyond the traditional lecture and Q&A format. Please join us to broaden your knowledge and awareness and to engage in meaningful conversations with new people and area scientists. This is a special teaching by Chöden Rinpoche, one of the great living Tibetan masters of the Gelugpa lineage. Registration is required: http://www.kadampa-center.org/news/choden2007.php The Seven-Point Mind Training is a collection of brief, powerful mind training sayings grouped around seven points. They were written by Geshe Chekawa Yeshe Dorje (1102-1176), an accomplished Kadampa master. Mind training, or in Tibetan blos.byong (pronounced lojong), is a genre of teachings that counter self cherishing attitudes and behaviors, and eventually lead to the determination to be enlightened for the sake of all sentient beings. When Chekawa read Langri Tangpa's Eight Verses, he was so moved by the fifth verse, especially the line that read, "give the victory to others," that he sought out Geshe Sharawa, a disciple of the author, to find out how to practice these words. The secret oral teachings Chekawa received from Geshe Sharawa are the foundation of the Seven-Point Mind Training. Mind training was originally a secret transmission, taught only to students who had a proven capacity and sincerity for practice. Geshe Chekawa popularized mind training through the Seven-Point Mind Training. All events at Kadampa Center are offered free of charge. Kadampa Center exists only through voluntary financial donations, as well as gifts of time, talent and energy.

Silent Meditation

Meditation is basic to Buddhist spiritual practice. One's suffering and one's happiness is dependent upon one's mind. To ensure for ourselves the happiness that we so ardently desire, it is essential that we begin each day with a peaceful and calm mind. Every Sunday morning from 9:00-10:00am Kadampa Center offers silent meditation. The silent meditation includes 20 minutes of sitting meditation followed by 10 minutes of walking meditation (optional) and another 20 minutes of sitting meditation. Participants should arrive no later than 9:00. Each and every one is invited to come. You will find it to be a wonderful and relaxing way, not only to begin your day, but also your week. All are welcome regardless of one's level of practice.
