Presented by the California Studies Association; The Commons Group; California Studies Center, U.C. Berkeley; Heyday Books The rich and bountiful commons that Californians once enjoyed as a gift of nature and fruit of public efforts are under assault today. Our resources are degraded, our services privatized and our public spaces increasingly pre-empted. But the state’s commons-wealth are not mere amenities for our private lives or raw materials for the economy. They are collective goods, shared resources and collective achievements that underpin our and future generations’ well-being, our civic life and our possibility for a democratic life together. What exactly are commons? How do they work? How can we protect them? Join scholars, activists, scientists and writers from around the state to examine the crises of California’s commons, recover their history and imagine their possible futures. All too often, today's copyright law fails to serve the public interest. In this discussion, Rick Falkvinge of the Swedish Pirate Party joins us to examine some new approaches to copyright, challenging some of the fundamental (and unexamined) assumptions about "intellectual property." We'll look at how both creativity and civil liberties are often stymied by the current system, and highlight some genuinely new proposals for change. - Rick Falkinge, Pirate Party, Sweden - Karl Fogel, QuestionCopyright.org - Brad Templeton, Electronic Frontier Foundation - Tony Falzone, Fair Use Project, Center for Internet and Society, Stanford Law School - Mary Hodder, Dabble - Moderator: Jeff Ubois, digital archivist $10 at the door gets you pizza, drinks, and food for thought (and action).

Originally called the Tamsen Donner Memorial Blues Band, this hard-rocking blues and swing dance quartet has added new songs that stylistically go beyond its foundation of classic blues tunes, so it just shortened its name, not its show. Whether it’s a swinging shuffle, a funky dance tune, a bluesy ballad, or a rocking instrumental, the energy is high and the passion sincere.

Eunyee Koh, Interface Ecology Lab - Texas A&M Generating Views of the Buzz: Browsing Popular Media and Authoring using Mixed-Initiative Composition ABSTRACT: combinFormation's mixed-initiative composition space enables system agents and humans to engage in processes of finding relevant information, and forming and authoring collections. Previously, the system was developed and utilized to support information discovery. The efficacy of the system for supporting creativity has been established in some contexts. We present combinFormation as a tool for browsing popular media and authoring personal collections. Yahoo Buzz is an popular media collection of top search queries, categorized into genres such as actors, music and sports. Existing interfaces limit the human participant to only viewing results of a single search at any given time. This paper presents a new system structure which interleaves multiple searches concurrently in a round-robin manner, enabling participants to concurrently explore and connect diverse result sets, which, in aggregate, may consist of hundreds of documents. The mixed-initiative composition space serves as a media interface for combining search results and authoring personal collections. Evaluation using the Buzz demonstrated participants ability to browse more diverse information using combinFormation than with a typical browser. They experienced browsing and authoring as easier and more entertaining. Results have implications for a broad range of use contexts in which combined views of the results of multiple searches need to be authored, including research scenarios, as well as popular media. BIOGRAPHY: Eunyee Koh is a Ph.D. candidate in the computer science department at Texas A&M University. Her research area includes human computer interaction and information retrieval. Her recent research work focuses on development and evaluation of the information system named combinFormation (http://ecologylab.cs.tamu.edu/combinFormation/). The research results in publishing papers in ACM Multimedia, SIGIR, ACM Document Engineering, Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL), and European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL) . She was a reviewer for IEEE transactions on Human-Centered Computing and ACM Computer Human Interaction. In addition, she is actively involved in volunteering and mentoring work in the women in computer science group, and also she was a student volunteer in various conferences such as the JCDL, ACM CHI, and SIGIR.

Tonight's feature is Jayde Blayde, who will perform in the 6th slot. All performers are welcome to participate in this event that has produced some of our brightest performers, including: Shawn Colvin, Dana Carvey, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Patrick Landeza. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS! One unique aspect of our Open Mic is that, unlike those held in noisy bars where people show up in spite of the fact that there's live music, you will be playing to a supportive group of friends and performers who are actually listening!!! The sign-up begins at 7:30, when the doors open. However, people with advance tickets get let in first, so they have first dibs on the list. People often start lining up as early as 7, some even come before 7 to get an advance ticket before the box office closes (at 7). Tickets are $4.50 in advance, $5.50 at the door, even if you are performing. EXCEPTION: Any performer showing up with a paying, non-performing member of the audience plays for free!!! Note: you must show up together to take advantage of this offer. Solo performers get to play one song, groups get to play two songs. Management reserves the right to occasionally award a performer with an extra song, for any reason management deems appropriate. BONUS: Anyone, performers and audience alike, staying until the end of the night is entitled to a FREE TICKET to an upcoming Freight show of their choice. This is a great deal, considering the Freight's normal ticket prices. Shows that are sold out or close to being sold out are excluded from this offer.

As an added bonus, ABS will perform Georg Philipp Telemann's Water Music, a boisterous dance suite that pays homage to seafaring life in early 18th-century Hamburg. Each movement has a mythical aquatic personality: Neptune, Triton, Thetis, Aeolus, and Zephyr are brought to life in music. Bach's rousing Sixth Brandenburg - a virtual quadruple concerto for violas and violas da gamba - will bring the season to a brilliant close. Guest artist JOHN THIESSEN's artistry has been described by the New York Times as "brilliant solo playing on a valveless trumpet"; and the San Francisco Chronicle has raved that "the blazing ceremonial music that began and ended the evening--the opening graced by John Thiessen's brilliant trumpet solo--was ardent enough to warm the bluest blood." ABOUT AMERICAN BACH SOLOISTS: Founded in 1989, the American Bach Soloists (ABS) continue to introduce audiences to the masterworks of Bach and his contemporaries, as well as little-known gems from the Baroque and early-Classical eras, through historically informed performances using period instruments and leading vocal interpreters of Baroque music. Under the leadership of Co-founder and Music Director Jeffrey Thomas the ensemble has become a veritable Who's who of early music specialists and has been called "superbly musical,"and "a breath of fresh air."Event submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of NEQA.

From their childhood together in the hardcore South Central Los Angeles wasteland to years of forced school-bused integration, Fishbone's influences were kaleidoscopic and never-ending. The band was formed in 1979 in the ghettos of South Central Los Angeles. The group came from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. Fishbone first gained attention with their unique live concerts, earning a reputation as one of the most original bands in the alternative genre. Their unique stew of different styles, mixed with hectic energy and pounding rhythms, were a huge influence on the funk/rock/metal/rap genre that would become popular in the 1990s. Live audiences around the world have been surrendering to the band's stage flash and magical rhythms with uninterrupted regularity. Such passionate devotion is not lost on Fishbone, who refer to their friends on the road as "The Familyhood."

At the keyboard, Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India and blends them with the rangy, percussive avant-garde stylings she cultivated in studies with Don Pullen and Henry Threadgill. This personal musical vocabulary is further enriched by a lush lyricism and organized by an architectural sense of composition that she derived from classical training. Described by Down Beat magazine as a "sonic innovator [whose reputation] has been built on electronics, trips to the fringes of electric jazz, rock 'n' roll, danceable beats and snappy writing," composer and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has led a number of experimental/improv jazz groups including the President, Pigpen, Zony Mash, and Ponga, and has also released work as a solo artist. This jazz group features Ben Perowsky, Tim Luntzel and Jim Campilongo.

CASS Berkeley Town Hall Meeting Sunday 24 Feb 2008, 5 - 7 pm Berkeley Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street Berkeley In the Fall of 2007 the California Department of Food and Agriculture began a program of aerial spraying in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Your friends and neighbors in these counties were subjected to aerial assault by pesticides in a dangerous --and ineffective-- attempt to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM), a relatively insignificant agricultural pest common in Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. The CDFA eradication program, of spraying repeatedly for months (and possibly years) on end, is coming to the Bay Area in 2008 --and to Berkeley in particular. Come to a town hall meeting to get informed, get riled up, and get motivated to stop this program predicated not on good science but on the politics of trade wars. It is time to get prepared to publicly confront the CDFA on its nonsensical and poisonous behavior. The town hall meeting is sponsored by CASS (California Alliance to Stop the Spraying), an alliance of non-profits and individuals that originated in the Monterey Bay Area in December 2007. For more information on the spraying in general, check out the activist website www.lbamspray.com.

The company's tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim. And foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." "Monster in the Dark" tells the horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar and bizarrely familiar society. It is a world ruled by 'the Structure,' a shadowy government that monitors its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. It is a place where business literally consumes you, Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners, and people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. "Monster in the Dark" is the culmination of a two-year theatrical exploration in foolsFURY's style of "sheer kinetic energy and rigorous physical vocabulary" (SF Bay Guardian). Created by foolsFURY company members under the direction of Ben Yalom and in collaboration with novelist/playwright Doug Dorst, this production, like the best of foolsFURY’s work, is both hilarious and deeply disturbing.

According to recent studies by the Pew Center on the Internet And American Life, more than half of American teens online have produced media content and about a third have circulated media that they have produced beyond their immediate friends and family. These statistics reflect the growing importance of participatory culture in the everyday lives of American young people. Work across a range of disciplines suggest that these emerging forms of participatory culture are important sites for informal learning and may be the crucible out of which new conceptions of civic engagement are emerging. Drawing on insights from a recent white paper produced for the MacArthur Foundation, this talk will discuss the need to develop new forms of media literacy pedagogy which reflects this context of a participatory culture, materials which both respond to the ethical challenges confronted by those teens who are already producing and circulating their own media as well as the challenges confronting those youth who are excluded from participation in these on-line worlds as a consequence of lack of access to technologies, skills, competencies, and cultural experiences taken for granted by their contemporaries. These issues can not be understood through a simple opposition between digital natives and digital immigrants, but rather require us to dig deeper into the diverse range of experiences young people have online and the range of different interactions between adults and teens in these new participatory culture. In the course of the presentation, I will be sharing a range of curricular materials and activities being developed by MIT's Project nml to support the teaching of these new social skills and cultural competencies.

foolsFURY Theater premieres “Monster in the Dark” Written by Doug Dorst; Directed by Ben Yalom Thursdays – Saturdays, Feb. 7 – 9 and 14 – 16 @ 8pm Sundays, Feb. 3, 10, 17 @ 5pm TICKETS: $15 - $30 general; $12 students/seniors and TBA members; PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN ON THURSDAYS BOX OFFICE: (800) 838-3006 and brownpapertickets.com There's critical fuss about foolsFURY Theater Company! They are recipients of the prestigious 2007 San Francisco Bay Guardian GOLDIE Award for 'Best Discovery in Theater'; their tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim; and foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." Check out their 10th anniversary production, "Monster in the Dark," a horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar society. (Sound familiar?) Shadowy governments monitor its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. Businesses literally consume the citizens, and Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners. Plus people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. This is a hilarious and deeply disturbing play.

Tonight's feature is TODD SHIPLEY, who will perform in the 6th slot.
