GOD ON TRIAL: political activist, draft resister, and civil rights attorney Peter Irons talks with USF Law School Dean Jeffrey Brand. Tuesday May 22 7:30 pm At the Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in Berkeley $5 at the door; no one turned away for lack of funds. For information e-mail lewis@litminds.org This event is organized by LitMinds.org. Eminent civil rights attorney, political activist, and legal scholar Peter Irons will be in conversation with Jeffrey Brand, Dean of the USF Law School, to talk about his new book God On Trial: Dispatches from America's Religious Battlefields. The event will be introduced by Lewis Klausner of LitMinds.org. Over the past two decades, federal courts have become contentious battlefields in America’s growing religious wars. Since 1989, five momentous court cases testing the principles of separation of Church and State have divided communities—and the nation. Peter Irons, a noted constitutional scholar, lawyer, and author of the bestselling May It Please the Court, provides detailed and penetrating accounts of these cases. He includes first-person monologues from both sides of each case that reveal the passions and rationales at work in these conflicts. Irons shows that when the courts debate issues like the public display of a cross or the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance they founder and drift for lack of clear legal standards.

The Kaddish, widely known as the prayer for the dead, does not speak of death. So why, then, is the Kaddish recited after the death of a close relative? And how did the Kaddish, a prayer of unknown origin, become one of the most famous and familiar prayers in Jewish liturgy? Leon Charney traveled across the globe to solve the mystery of the Kaddish. Join us for a fascinating walk through Jewish history and culture as he shares his discoveries. Leon H. Charney has enjoyed a distinguished career as advisor to world leaders. He aided Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in bringing Soviet Jewish dissidents to Israel, and helped Jimmy Carter broker the Camp David Accords. He is the author of three books and hosts The Leon Charney Report, a weekly, national television show. He is also a cantor by training, and may demonstrate the various melodies of the Kaddish. FREE

"Exotic, Nostalgic, Bizarre: Jewish Food in the Eyes of American European Food Writers" Over the past two centuries, food writers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, have described the cuisine of Jewish societies in striking terms, often marked by the tropes of orientalism, nostalgia, or anti-Semitism. Descriptions of "Jewish food," its ingredients, sights and smells, provide a means to negotiate complex attitudes towards Jewish difference, and the possibilities of maintaining a Jewish identity in the modern world. Wurgaft surveys a range of food writers in an attempt to trace the representation of Jewish identity in a small, but lively, literary domain. $8 non-members; $6 members.

Description Free and open to the public - and followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above. Distant Closeness: Flickr and the Changing Sociality of Images ABSTRACT: Flickr is much more than a useful tool for sharing photos: it is helping to change the role of images in people's lives, in their interactions, and their individual and collective construction of self. This is what we are finding in an on-going study of Flickr users, part of a larger project aimed at understanding (1) how new photo making and sharing technologies relate to prior and emergent photographic practices and (2) what the enthusiastic adoption of these new technologies tells us about the adoption and adaptation of new technology more generally. Personal photography is extraordinarily widely-practiced and highly valued. Digital photography and online sharing have been very successful. Flickr is a new form of online sharing which has also been quite successful. We've been studying non-professional photographers in general (film and digital), cameraphone uses, and now Flickr and ZoneTag users to see how changing image-making and sharing technologies support and illuminate prior practices and purposes and enables new ones. We're interested in how people are actually using new media and multimodality in the changing role of images in people's activities and interactions. Many theories of technological change try to explain why only some technologies successfully enter into our sociotechnical ecologies. We content that investigating the successful incorporation of these new image-making and sharing technologies will help us understand the issue of technological change more generally. BIOGRAPHY: Nancy Van House is a Professor in the School of Information (formerly SIMS, the School of Information Management and Systems) at UC Berkeley. Her research is rooted in Science and Technology Studies, Visual Studies, and New Media. Her interest is in understanding the intersection between people's practices and activities and new technology.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Festival hits the road with a roster of musical heavyweights representing the very best in modern jazz. Terence Blanchard ("His writing is superb and heartfelt, his playing perfect," says the Wall Street Journal) rose to prominence through his association with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and is one of today's top trumpet players. Saxophonist James Moody has dominated the scene for over 60 years and continues to delight audiences with his vitality and innovative playing. Nnenna Freelon is in "the very top echelon" (Los Angeles Times) of jazz vocalists, and pianist Benny Green "plays funky and hard, and breathes not only be-bop but Oscar Peterson's virtuosic effusions as well" (The New York Times).

foolsFURY Theater premieres “Monster in the Dark” Written by Doug Dorst; Directed by Ben Yalom Thursdays – Saturdays, Feb. 7 – 9 and 14 – 16 @ 8pm Sundays, Feb. 3, 10, 17 @ 5pm Ashby Stage 1901 Ashby Ave, Berkeley TICKETS: $15 - $30 general admission, sliding scale $12 students/seniors and TBA members Thursdays are Pay-what-you-can BOX OFFICE: (800) 838-3006 and brownpapertickets.com INFORMATION: http://www.foolsfury.org/ foolsFURY Theater Company launches their 10th Anniversary season following a stellar 2007 season distinguished with critical and popular recognition. foolsFURY was awarded the prestigious 2007 San Francisco Bay Guardian GOLDIE Award for 'Best Discovery in Theater'. The company's tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim. And foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." "Monster in the Dark" tells the horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar and bizarrely familiar society. It is a world ruled by 'the Structure,' a shadowy government that monitors its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. It is a place where business literally consumes you, Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners, and people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. "Monster in the Dark" is the culmination of a two-year theatrical exploration in foolsFURY's style of "sheer kinetic energy and rigorous physical vocabulary" (SF Bay Guardian). Created by foolsFURY company members under the direction of Ben Yalom and in collaboration with novelist/playwright Doug Dorst, this production, like the best of foolsFURY’s work, is both hilarious and deeply disturbing.

The Grammy-nominated New Century Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the next program in its 2007-08 season. The program, with performances in San Rafael, Berkeley, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, features a 17-member conductorless string orchestra with founding Music Director and guest concertmaster Rachel Barton Pine. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine has inspired audiences worldwide with her precision and intensity on the violin. In addition to her many recordings and appearances as a soloist and chamber musician, Ms. Pine serves as president of the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation, an organization that provides assistance to young musicians and encourages awareness and appreciation of classical music. Ms. Pine’s fascinating program begins with a work by Saint-Georges, a West Indian composer and fencer who commissioned Hadyn’s six Paris symphonies. Fast forward into the 20th century with Lyric Suite by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Walker, a gorgeous piece that is reminiscent of Barber’s Adagio for Strings, followed by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 2, a work flavored with jazz and Romantic elements. Perkinson’s many credits include serving as music director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and co-founding New York’s Symphony of the New World. The evening concludes with the richly Romantic and bittersweet String Sextet No. 1 by Brahms. PROGRAM: Saint-Georges Violin Concerto in A Major George Walker Lyric Suite Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson Sinfonietta No. 2, Generations Brahms Sextet in B-flat major, Op. 18 WHEN & WHERE: June 5-10, 2008 Rachel Barton Pine, guest concertmaster Jun. 5 at 8pm, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley Jun. 6 at 8pm, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Avenue, Palo Alto Jun. 8 at 5pm, Osher Marin JCC, 200 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael Jun. 10 at 8pm, Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco TICKETS: Individual tickets are on sale now at www.ncco.org and 415.357.1111 or through City Box at www.cityboxoffice.com and 415.392.4400. Single ticket prices for the orchestra series are $42/$28 (a small service charge applies for single tickets). Half-price tickets are available for students. For more information, call the NCCO at 415.357.1111 or visit the website at www.ncco.org The New Century Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1992, looks for fresh, exciting new ways to present classical music in the San Francisco Bay Area by combining performances of extraordinary quality with innovative programming. The music director or guest concertmaster chooses the programs and guides the artistic vision, but the seventeen members of the orchestra perform without a conductor. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power. As part of its dedication to the future of music and to the community, the NCCO provides violin lessons to underserved students in Marin City and San Rafael’s Canal District, as well as intimate classroom performances by string quartets to students in Bay Area elementary schools. The orchestra has released four compact discs, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. HOMEPAGE: http://www.ncco.org

202 South Hall Abstract This talk explore co-designing innovations with everyday people, i.e. non-designers. Salu Ylirisku will present an example case study that was conducted with a bank's phone service in order to develop knowledge management practices and tools. In the case study a combination contextual study and video scenario workshops were utilized together with a co-design approach with the bank's phone service workers. The project created new visions into ways to develop knowledge management in the bank. The talk will also examine experiences from essentially similar projects where new product and service innovations have been explored with non-designers. Bio Salu Ylirisku (M.Sc.) is a visiting researcher at PARC, and is a Computer Science and design researcher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki / School of Design. His current doctoral studies focus on the construction of new ideas in social and material interaction. The particular perspective that he utilizes in the study is called "design framing". Ylirisku has co-authored a book Designing with Video: Focusing the User-centred Design Process, which was published last Fall (2007) by Springer. He has also published several scientific articles on the processes of user-centered innovation.

MARY ANN PIETTE: Saving Power at Peak Hours FREE Event - no RSVP or Tickets Required! California needs new, responsive demand-side energy technologies, to ensure that periods of tight electricity supply on the grid don't turn into power outages. Led by Berkeley Lab’s Mary Ann Piette, the California Energy Commission (through its Public Interest Energy Research Program) has established a Demand Response Research Center that addresses two motivations for adopting demand responsiveness: reducing average electricity prices, and preventing future electricity crises. The research seeks to understand factors that influence "what works" in Demand Response. Piette’s team is investigating the two types of demand response – load response and price response – that may influence and reduce the use of peak electric power through automated controls, peak pricing, advanced communications, and other strategies. Would you be willing to consider one or some of these? Please join us to learn more about these developments.

Special Lecture sponsored by the UC Berkeley School of Information, the Berkeley Center for New Media, and the Berkeley Institute of Design Urban sensing systems based on mobile phones offer unprecedented observational capacity at the scale of the individual; at they same time they are remarkably scalable and affordable given the wide proliferation of cellular phone infrastructure and consumer devices that incorporate digital imagers, bluetooth short-range radios, and location services such as GPS . Many of the architectural lessons learned through the design and deployment of environmental sensing systems appear applicable to urban sensing as well. As with environmental sensing, multiscale data and models are essential to provide interpretive context for individual data streams, and mobility is essential to achieve scalability and coverage. Moreover in-network and decentralized processing will be critical to support privacy and personal control. These systems promise to become a very effective "make a case" technology to address a range of civic concerns, from public health to safety and sustainability…at the same time that they will push even further on our societies concept of privacy and private space. In this talk I will draw upon work-in-progress at the Center for Embedded Sensing. Deborah Estrin (Ph.D. MIT, 1985; BSEE UCB, 1980) is a Professor of Computer Science, holds the Jon Postel Chair in Computer Networks, and is Founding Director of the NSF-funded Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS). CENS mission is to explore and develop innovative, application-focused, distributed sensing systems, from ecosystems to human systems. Deborah’s earlier work focused on Internet scaling, including inter-domain and multicast routing. Since the late 90's her work has focused on multi-disciplinary, experimental-systems research and development as applied to a variety of environmental monitoring challenges. Most recently this work includes participatory-sensing systems, at the personal and community level, leveraging the location, acoustic, image, and attached-sensor data streams increasingly available from mobile phones.

CORY DOCTOROW reads from LITTLE BROTHER. Free event. Marcus, a.k.a "w1n5t0n," is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works—and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's clumsy surveillance systems. But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they're mercilessly interrogated for days. When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself. "I'd recommend Little Brother over pretty much any book I've read this year." —Neil Gaiman Cory Doctorow is a coeditor of Boing Boing and writes columns for Make, Information Week, the Guardian online, and Locus. He has won the Locus Award three times, been nominated for the Hugo and the Nebula, and was named one of the Web's twenty-five influencers by Forbes magazine. He hopes you'll use technology to change the world.
