Kinetic Sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art. Each May, Kinetic Sculptures from the eastern United States convene at the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) on Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the East Coast Championship race. A few weeks later, the World Championships are held in Arcata, California. Folks have been racing in California since 1969, when a Ferndale artist named Hobart Brown made a few "artistic improvements" to his son's tricycle, and a friendly wager led to a race among weird sculptures, and the concept has been spreading ever since. In 1999, Baltimore held its first Kinetic Sculpture Race (KSR), sponsored by AVAM. Browse the galleries on the website to see narrated photos of the Baltimore KSR. The eight-hour race covers 15 miles, mostly on pavement, but with two segments out in the harbor, one segment of thick mud, and one segment through sand. We went last year and we had a blast! A terrific all-family event.

The Philadelphia based group, The Roots, showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s, by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Although their album work has been inconsistent, more intent on building grooves than pushing songs, The Roots' live shows are among the best in the business. A long time force in the hip-hop genre, Kane's lyrical boasts are the stuff of legend.

Singer/songwriter Stephen Kellogg started out as a solo act and is now backed up by a full band. Singer/songwriter MoZella sings soul. Braddigan's (ex-Dispatch) music may best be described as "what would happen in a loving fist-fight between Paul Simon, Jack Johnson and Pearl Jam!" As a drummer/guitar player/singer-songwriter, his songs are rooted in beautifully heavy rhythms, layers of harmonies and cultural snapshots from his travels.? Whether reggae, folk, latin, or rock, Braddigan's music flows lyrically from a deep well of adventures.
