Clay Cumbie

Where: The Blue Note (Columbia)

Date: 2007-10-27 19:00:00

Type:

Clay Cumbie - $10 Doors open at 7:00pm The southern Alabama cotton town of Opelika is surrounded by the musical heritage of deep-south country soul and southern rock. A short drive south of Florence, Alabama, home of the famed Muscle Shoals sound, and a stone's throw east of Montgomery, birthplace of Hank Williams, the farms and peanut fields along the back roads echo with the incredibly rich mix of musical flavors. It is among this collage of sounds that Clay Cumbie was born and raised. A self taught guitarist, Cumbie studied the craft of singer/songwriter icons of the 70's and 80's such as James Taylor, Jim Croce, Jackson Browne and rock/ soul pioneers Hall and Oates in his youth. "All those guys were my heroes growing up," Cumbie remembers. "They all had such a huge influence on the way I write songs." By the time he was a teenager, Cumbie was playing in local clubs and honing his own songwriting craft. Eventually the Cumbie family moved west to Columbia, MO and Cumbie's focus shifted to an altogether different skilled craft: baseball. As an up-and-coming player throughout high-school, Cumbie starred on the field while keeping his musical hobby on the side. As Cumbie's focus shifted between the diamond shape inlays on his guitar and the baseball diamond, music was undergoing a radical shift from the eclectic 80's to the innovative alternative rock and New Country sound of the early 90's. Country music was reborn with the "class of '89" artists such as Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Garth Brooks who brought legions of new fans to the genre and drove sales skyrocketing. Invigorated by the proliferance of accessible country music and the influence of new singer/songwriter artists such as Dave Matthews and Sheryl Crow, along with songwriter driven bands like Counting Crows, Cumbie rejuvenated his love for singing and playing. He revitalized his live show and amassed a dedicated local fanbase around Columbia. http://www.myspace.com/claycumbie

Cracker

Where: The Blue Note (Columbia)

Date: 2007-11-13 19:00:00

Type:

Cracker - $15 with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Doors open at 7:00pm Cracker may be considered a somewhat traditional rock band (almost comparable to roots rock at times), yet singer/guitarist David Lowery's roots were anything but traditional since he fronted the '80s alternative outfit Camper Van Beethoven. Shortly after Camper Van Beethoven called it quits in 1990, Lowery began demoing material along with guitarist Johnny Hickman and bassist Davey Faragher, eventually going by the name Cracker (several of these early demos would eventually surface under the title of David Lowery Demo Mixes). By 1991, the newly formed band had signed a recording contract with Virgin and enlisted the help of several drummers/percussionists (Jim Keltner, Rick Jaeger, and Phil Jones), issuing their self-titled debut in 1992. A year later, Cracker issued their best-known album, Kerosene Hat, which spawned the popular MTV/rock radio hit "Low." But by the time of their third release, 1996's The Golden Age, Faragher had been replaced with Bob Rupe, while the drum spot was occupied by a trio of players: Charlie Quintana, Eddie Bayers, and Johnny Hott. After the album's supporting tour wrapped up, Lowery briefly concentrated on projects outside the band, producing such artists as Joan Osborne, Lauren Hoffman, Magnet, Fighting Gravity, and Sparklehorse (all at his Sound of Music recording studio in Richmond, VA), and co-producing the Counting Crows along with former Camper Van Beethoven producer Dennis Herring. Lowery also found the time to co-star in director Eric Drilling's independent film River Red (also music directing the film, which Hickman scored) and appeared in another film, director Matt Leutwyler's This Space Between Us. By the end of the decade, Cracker seemed to have settled on a somewhat permanent lineup as drummer Frank Funaro and keyboardist/accordion player Kenny Margolis joined up with Lowery, Hickman, and Rupe, issuing 1998's Gentleman's Blues. During the early 21st century, Cracker continued to tour and even enlisted the help of several of Lowery's former Camper Van Beethoven members on select dates (bassist Victor Krummenacher, guitarist/violinist Jonathan Segel, and guitarist Greg Lisher). They issued a live set in 2001, Traveling Apothecary Show & Revue, while a year later, Cracker issued their fifth studio album overall, Forever. Forever completed the bands slow progression back to the eclecticism of Lowery's former group CVB. www.crackersoul.com

360 Smile, Pierpoint, 3rd Day of May - $5 / 8:30 pm Not your typical alt rock band, Threesixtysmile is a captivating power-rock foursome hailing from Saint Louis, Missouri. Originally founded in 2004, by former members of Mindrive, Josh Herr and Joey Natas, the quartet found completion with the addition of guitarist Jonny Baynes and bassist Jeff Boyer. The bands signature thought provoking lyrics are braced by driving and melodic guitar riffs, causing their sound to be infectious and refreshing. This foursome dances on the lines of gritty thundersome pop with astounding talent and precision. A little bit later, they turned into a quintet. Then, after a couple of years, they transformed into a sextet with the addition of another former resident of this town in Missouri we call Columbia. Type:

Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime - $14 in advance, $16 day of show with Scotty Don't, Remedy Doors open at 7:30pm The phenomenon known as Sublime, arguably the most energetic, original and uniquely eclectic band ever, ended with the death of lead singer and guitarist Brad Nowell in 1996. But encompassing the sense of place and purpose associated with Sublime’s music, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime channels the spirit of their predecessors with a fury not felt for some time. What separates Badfish from other tribute bands is that they have replicated Sublime’s essence, developing a scene and dedicated following usually reserved for label-driven, mainstream acts. Badfish make their mark on the audience by playing with the spirit of Sublime – they perform not as Sublime would have, or did – they perform as Badfish does. www.badfish.com

Where: Mojo's

Date: 2007-10-10 19:30:00

Type:

An Evening with The Wilders - $10 / 7:30 pm "They just have so much energy!" This often-heard quote accurately follows a performance by Kansas City's unique hillbilly stringband, The Wilders. This talented group, formed in 1996, is regularly regarded as "the band to see" wherever they go. Led by singer, guitarist and country wisecracker, Ike Sheldon, the band grounds itself firmly in the early formative years of recorded country music. Featured in each performance are the hard driving old time fiddle tunes presided over by multi-award-winning fiddler, Betse Ellis. Her infectious fiddling is often the cause of spontaneous dancing by both the audience and the band! The Wilders' playlist is peppered with original country, bluegrass, hillbilly songs, and fiddle tunes, and also includes many of the classic country favorites heard in the early days of the Grand Ol' Opry radio show. Songs by Hall of Famers Jimmie Rogers, Roy Acuff and the Carter Family are presented in a faithful yet original light. http://www.wilderscountry.com/

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Where: The Blue Note (Columbia)

Date: 2007-10-15 19:30:00

Type:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - $15 Doors open at 7:30pm By 1999, B.R.M.C. had recorded a polished 16-track demo CD that began making the rounds (they sold all 500 copies at their shows), and relocated to Los Angeles. Local Santa Monica-based KCRW (a well-known FM station that compiled and released yearly Rare on Air CD compilations) jumped on the band's demo first, giving them their initial airplay, but soon interest in the band spread across the Atlantic, where BBC Sheffield even named the demo their "Record of the Week." Oasis' Noel Gallagher heard it and wanted to sign the band to his new Brother Records imprint, telling MOJO magazine that they were his favorite new band, but after inking a lucrative Warner/Chappell publishing deal, they were fielding offers from interested major and indie labels, ultimately choosing to sign in March 2000 with Virgin Records. After a short U.S. tour with the Dandy Warhols, the band entered the studio and produced a self-titled debut, B.R.M.C., which was issued in March 2001. Two years later, the trio returned with a slicker edge; Take Them on, on Your Own appeared in September 2003. They severed ties with Virgin Records eight months later. A deal with RCA surfaced within months, and the acoustic, Americana-influenced Howl arrived in August of 2005. The band moved back to the loud rock & roll approach favored on their first two albums with 2007's Baby 81. www.blackrebelmotorcycleclub.com

Farewell to The 40 Thieves featuring Steddy P, Reach, Earthworms and MO City Diamonds - $5 Doors open at 8:30pm The 40 Thieves started as a musical experiment with Adam Speer and Matt Range on drums and bass, playing poetry slams and hip hop battles around Columbia, MO in 2004. Adding CJ Banks on keyboards, T40T recorded a demo on a 4 track cassette recorder and began an idea to create a collective of like-minded musicians and MC's. So T40T started to build a relationship with local MC's and a reputation for bringing a live music element to Midwest hip hop. CJ bowed out in 2005 and that brought in Chris Blose on keys; a seasoned musician who learned the songs effortlessly and immediately became a crucial element to the song writing process. By 2005 T40T were embraced by the Columbia music community and promoters, opening for major label acts such as: Ozomatli and Blackalicious. Also, they were put on the same bills as underground acts such as: One Be Lo, Hanger 18 and Fat Lip (of the Pharcyde). Around this time T40T began to form working relationships with Missouri MC's www.the40thieves.net

Type:

Mobius Band, Tigercity - $8 / 8:30 pm Peter Sax, Noam Schatz, and Ben Sterling are Mobius Band. Their new album is called Heaven (due out on Misra October 2nd 2007). The group started in earnest when they moved together to a small rural town in Western Massachusetts called Shutesbury (pop 1,800). Cradled in the Pioneer Valley and bracketed by college kids and semi-retired alternative rock stars, Mobius Band woodshedded for several years, rarely venturing out of New England until 2004, when Ben and Peter moved to Brooklyn’s quiet Carroll Gardens neighborhood. There, the group picked up momentum, releasing their debut album, The Loving Sound of Static (Ghostly 2005) and embarking on a non-stop touring regimen, notching over 150 shows, including tours with neighborhood confederates The National and trans-Atlantic friends like Editors and Tom Vek. What at first seems like a mixed bag of associates (noir indie rock; junk-shop electronica) actually provides a rough triangulation of what Mobius Band is about—pop hooks grounded in experimentation, subtle musicianship, and a taste for ruminative lyrics. http://www.mobiusband.com/ http://www.tigercitymusic.com/

Spoon - $20 with Apostle of Hustle Doors open at 7:00pm Hailing from Austin, TX, Spoon originated in 1994 as a collaboration between Britt Daniel (vocals/guitar) and Jim Eno (drums) and a rotating cast of supporting players. Their hybrid of indie and punk resulted in a number of Sonic Youth and Pixies comparisons after their 1996 debut album, Telephono. Spoon toured with the likes of Pavement, Guided by Voices, Silkworm, and Archers of Loaf before their Soft Effects EP was released in 1997. Following an ill-fated move to Elektra Records, which found them being dropped from the label following the issue of their third album, A Series of Sneaks, in 1998, Spoon went the indie route with a handfull of 7" singles and the The Agony of Laffitte EP in 1999. In fall 2000, the Love Ways EP was released on Merge, paving the way for spring 2001's full-length Girls Can Tell. The album was a critical success, ending up at or near the top of many best-of-2001 lists. Spoon released the more musically adventurous follow-up, Kill the Moonlight, in August 2002. The band opted for a bigger, darker sound on 2005's Gimme Fiction. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga -- which was named after the melody of one of the album's songs, "The Ghost of You Lingers" -- mixed unusual instrumentation and nods to Motown and soul, and was released in summer 2007. www.spoontheband.com www.apostleofhustle.com

Cross Canadian Ragweed - $21 Reserved seating, $16 GA with Back Porch Mary Doors open at 8:00pm Whenever Cross Canadian Ragweed gets asked if they're a country band or a rock band, they just laugh and offer up a resounding Yes! Lead singer Cody Canada, rhythm guitarist Grady Cross, drummer Randy Ragsdale and bassist Jeremy Plato figured out a long time ago that their job was to make great music and let everybody else figure out what to call it. These lifelong friends spent years developing their sound in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and then with a relentless tour schedule they became kings of the Red Dirt and Texas music scenes. They grew their audience the old fashioned wayone fan at a time. Like many of their fans, the guys in CCR grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC and Merle Haggard. Thats how they seamlessly blend the energy, sex appeal and theater of rock n roll with the emotionally direct honesty and working class themes of country music. And more than anything its the bands commitment to honesty thats helped CCR grow to the point they sell CDs by the hundreds of thousands (2004s Soul Gravy which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard country album chart) and do more than $2.5 million in hard ticket sales in a single year. www.crosscanadianragweed.com www.backporchmary.com
