Dalton Publishing announces the release of Owen Egerton’s first collection of short stories How Best to Avoid Dying. "If Franz Kafka had lived in central Texas and seen too many midnight movies, he would have been Owen Egerton. This is a divinely weird collection." -- Neal Pollack As the reputation of the Austin literary scene continues to grow, Owen Egerton’s work rockets through the forefront. Austin author and comic performer Owen Egerton (the Sinus Show, Plays Well with Others) has crafted a collection of dark, heartbreaking, and often laugh-out-loud stories exploring death and its slippery when wet loopholes. Egerton’s writing harvests the comic energy and imagination he brings to the stage and film and lets the bounty pour forth on the open landscape of his rich fiction. Spelling bees turn deadly; Lazarus is living in modern day America and begging Jesus to reverse his miracle; a novelist becomes a celebrity not for writing, but for emptying his bowels on his worst critic’s waterbed. His writing style sizzles with sharp humor and musical sentences, which reward the reader with revealing meditations on life’s ending chapter. And if this is the last thing you read, this is truly as satisfying a last meal as any mortal might request.

Phoenix Rising, a conference devoted to all things Harry Potter, will fuse the intensity of academic debate with the improvisation of exploratory dialogue, the rhythms of New Orleans with the colors and pageantry of art. The conference will examine the novels, the movies, and the extraordinary fan phenomenon during the day; then, attendees will revel with the beat of the Crescent City — herself rising from ash and flame — when evening advances. As May 17-21, 2007, rolls around, we hope you are here with us. While we anticipate Harry's final chapter, we welcome you to a tumultuous five days of academia, innovation, artwork, writing and dialogue in a vibrant city that knows something about both celebration and heroes. The Big Easy, with her famed hospitality and indelible spirit, awaits. You will find the details of our Harry Potter conference, from the exhilarating to the exotic, via http://www.thephoenixrises.org

Keyshia Cole is an urban songstresses with a golden soprano voice. She knew the streets, and that inner-city viewpoint informs many of her songs, which are generally a bit rougher and less naive than those of your typical young female urban vocalist.

Founded in 1936, Hermes has paraded longer than any other night parading krewe in New Orleans’ Carnival. Held every year at 6 p.m. on the Friday before Shrove Tuesday, our next parade falls on February 1, 2008. The parade is the culmination of a season of events which intensify on the final week. The night before the parade is the Hermes Grand Ball, where the Queen and members of the Court are introduced in an elaborate ceremony, followed by a boisterous Supper Dance. Though the King is the center attraction, his identity is kept secret in keeping with tradition.
