Portugal the Man (Ex-Anatomy of A Ghost)

Where: The Middle East

Date: 2007-08-12 20:30:00

Type:

Portugal the Man is a soul/progressive/grime trio from Wasilla, Alaska. Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre. However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity.

Malajube, Ben Lee

Where: The Middle East

Date: 2007-11-21 21:00:00

Type:

Malajube is a Canadian pop-rock quintet that in 2004 quietly impressed hungry listeners with their debut record 'Le Compte Complet' and more recently has drawn a wide amount of praise for their second album 'Trompe-l'Oeil,' springing out of the already artistically rich local music scene, with their unique and original sound. In a music culture where bands dominate, Ben Lee is the youngest singer/songwriter to make an impression on Australian music. Even before his solo career, in his early teens, Lee came to attention as a member of Sydney band Noise Addict. Kate Voegele is recognized as one of the premier pop singer/songwriters in music today. With his heartfelt, melodic songs influenced by everything from '80s British New Wave to '70s folk, Nashville native Cary Brothers has achieved critical and commercial success with his independent releases "All The Rage" and "Waiting For Your Letter," both of which hit the top of the iTunes Folk charts.
