California Ave). As a leading antiwar figure in the 1960s, Hayden wrote extensively on Vietnam and was one of the small number of Americans engaged in dialogue with both sides during the Paris peace talks. Hayden remains a stalwart antiwar activist and is credited with initiating 2005 Congressional exit-strategy hearings on Iraq. This urgent book comes from a patient understanding of the nature of conflict resolution. Hayden argues that the Iraq War will end by applying public pressure against the pillars of the Bush Administration's foreign policy. For the first time in American history, he writes, an American majority voted against a war in progress in November 2006. A new kind of antiwar movement, delineated in this groundbreaking work, can help turn the tide of public opinion against the current conflict. This is a book for millions of peace activists, for an undecided public, and for the 2008 presidential candidates as well. Copies of Ending the War in Iraq will be available for purchase and signing at the lecture.

Welcome to our 1-year-anniversary event in the Bay Area! Speakers * Ibrahim Evsan, Founder and CEO, Sevenload * #2 * #3 As always, watch the wiki for updates. What is ze Veb Monday? Web Monday is an informal gathering (in and around Germany) aimed at bringing together developers, designers, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, researchers, web pioneers, inventors, bloggers, podcasters, end users and other folks interested in web 2.0 (in the broadest sense). The goal is to better connect the German web 2.0 scene as well as improve transatlantic idea exchange between Germany and the US (and – hopefully – help bring some of those good Silicon Valley vibes to Germany). Since its inception in November 2005, Web Monday has spread fast: meetings are now being held in 15+ cities all across Germany on a regular basis and have attracted several hundred repeat participants so far. Meetings have also been held in Vienna (Austria) and Innsbruck (Austria) as well as on Second Life. Anyone involved in web 2.0 or neighboring fields who has an interest in German-US business (or any kind of "bridging" between the two, for that matter) is most welcome to join. Whether you are from Germany and live and work here in Silicon Valley (and want to help spread the love), or whether you are from Silicon Valley and have ties to Germany – Web Monday Silicon Valley is your chance to present your product, your service, your startup, your cool new project or your next big idea to a growing audience of German web aficionados. There will be pizza/snacks and drinks (we may ask for a small contribution from those who can afford it).

Event: 'BIG EVENT: Mobility – Opportunities In Digital Convergence' BIGs Business Interface Groups – where Business & Technology collide! Date: Thursday, June 21, 2007 At 06:00 Duration: 2 Hours 30 Minutes Contact Info: SAP, 3410 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, CA Laura Weigant Email: info@svase.org URL: http://svase.org/index.php?option=com_extcalendar&Itemid=149&extmode=view&extid=939 With the advent of wireless as an enabler for mobility the user experience becomes more complex as internet access can be achieved via Wifi, WiMAX cellular and other infrastructures with devices that can accommodate all, and the users who demand to smoothly roam among these networks locally and internationally. Wireless Convergence is still the magic word in the mobile arena. There are many interpretations to Convergence. Where is all this headed? Our experienced and opinionated panelists will explore the topic of Digital Convergence in a Mobile World and explore opportunity for entrepreneurs and startups in this huge emerging market including: • What is YOUR definition of Convergence? • What services will change from wireless to fixed networks and vice versa? • What opportunities do you see for entrepreneurs from the recent deployments and developments in voice roaming between mobile and fixed? • What opportunities do you see for entrepreneurs from the recent deployments and developments in data roaming between mobile and fixed? • What opportunities do you see for entrepreneurs from the recent deployments in devices toward Convergence? • What opportunities do you see for entrepreneurs from the recent deployments and developments in cellular / DSL / cable Convergence? We prefer to be the lead investor in most of our financings and we are proactive, participating in the guidance of our companies through our relationships with the full management team. We are also very receptive to investment opportunities in market leaders with established syndicates. Inside our fund, we have invested in operating expertise to back up our investing professionals. The technology executives in our firm are available to our portfolio companies as well. Clearstone makes an unusually thorough effort to understand the intricacies of an entrepreneur's business before making an investment decision, and that detailed approach to gaining knowledge typifies our guidance of portfolio companies once we've invested. How Clearstone Invests Clearstone seeks companies that are creating next-generation infrastructure, and related solutions, that create economic advantage for businesses. We focus on enterprise technologies that propel profitable growth for business and add value for customers, communications (including the wireless, semiconductors and advanced optics that support the sector), and business-model innovations that leverage advances in Internet or communications infrastructures. We are attracted to innovators, category creators and market leaders who can define and dominate large sectors. We like to see companies mine horizontal markets for long-term scalability, with identifiable near-term revenue opportunities in specific verticals or identifiable customer types. We are also open-minded critical thinkers and are enthusiastic about pioneer companies that launched too early for steady revenue from their markets but are seeing convergence of their idea, solution and market acceptance. Vish Mishra Vish joined Clearstone in March 2002 with over 30 years of leadership and management experience in the high tech industry including software, Internet, networking and telecommunications. Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00 PM Meet Andrew Altschul when he reads from and discusses his spectacular debut novel, Lady Lazarus, the sprawling tale of Calliope Bird Morath the daughter of legendary punk-rock star—whose horrific suicide devastates the world. The novel is narrated by both Calliope and her obsessive biographer, who follows her from her silent childhood to her first tortured, manic public statements about her father; from her highly publicized publication of a book of poetry to her mysterious disappearance; from her reappearance as the mute leader of a cult-like brigade known as The Muse to her spectacular showdown with the biographer. A disturbing and razor-sharp meditation on twenty-first-century celebrity culture, Lady Lazarus is also a funny and moving story about the age-old question of the nature of the self. Bio: Andrew Foster Altschul is a Jones Lecturer and former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. His work has appeared in Fence, Swink, Story Quarterly, One Story and other journals, as well as the anthologies Best New American Voices 2006 and The O. Henry Prize Stories 2007. He lives in San Francisco.

A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World Bestselling author of Confederates in the Attic, Tony Horwitz, discusses his latest, A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World, a thrilling and eye-opening voyage to pre-Mayflower America, an irresistible blend of history, myth, and misadventure. The bestselling author of Blue Latitudes and Confederates in the Attic, takes us on a thrilling and eye-opening voyage to pre-Mayflower America. On a chance visit to Plymouth Rock, Tony Horwitz realizes he's mislaid more than a century of American history, from Columbus's sail in 1492 to Jamestown's founding in 16-o-something. Did nothing happen in between? Determined to find out, he embarks on a journey of rediscovery, following in the footsteps of the many Europeans who preceded the Pilgrims to America. An irresistible blend of history, myth, and misadventure, A Voyage Long and Strange captures the wonder and drama of first contact. Vikings, conquistadors, French voyageurs--these and many others roamed an unknown continent in quest of grapes, gold, converts, even a cure for syphilis. Though most failed, their remarkable exploits left an enduring mark on the land and people encountered by late-arriving English settlers. Tracing this legacy with his own epic trek--from Florida's Fountain of Youth to Plymouth's sacred Rock, from desert pueblos to subarctic sweat lodges--Tony Horwitz explores the revealing gap between what we enshrine and what we forget. Displaying his trademark talent for humor, narrative, and historical insight, A Voyage Long and Strange allows us to rediscover the New World for ourselves. Bio Tony Horwitz is a native of Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for many years as a reporter, first in Indiana and then during a decade overseas in Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, mostly covering wars and conflicts as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. After returning to the States, he won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and worked as a staff writer for The New Yorker before becoming a full-time author. His books include Baghdad Without a Map, a national bestseller about the Middle East; Confederates in the Attic, a national and New York Times bestseller about the Civil War; and Blue Latitudes, a national and New York Times bestseller about the Pacific voyages of Captain James Cook. Horwitz has been a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and a visiting scholar at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. He lives with his wife, Geraldine Brooks, and their son, Nathaniel, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
