Since implementing a traditional file system is extremely complex and difficult, presenting information seamlessly through files and folders has typically been limited to a small set of select programmers--often kernel hackers who develop at the lowest layers of a system. The MacFUSE mechanism breaks this barrier on Mac OS X by doing all the in-kernel hard work once and for all and leaving to the developer only the file-system-specific logic, which can be implemented as a regular user-space application. MacFUSE, with its simple programmer-visible API (same as the Linux FUSE API) and multiple language bindings, almost trivializes the process of making anything and everything appear seamlessly as a set of files and folders. You can use it to blur the line between the Macintosh Desktop and the Web. In this talk, you will hear the story of MacFUSE from its creator. More on Amit: Amit Singh is an operating systems researcher, programmer, and author. He manages the Macintosh engineering team at Google. Previously, Amit has worked on operating systems at IBM Research and Bell Laboratories. He is the author of the book "Mac OS X Internals: A Systems Approach". Amit also created and maintains osxbook.com and kernelthread.com. Amongst his recent open source contributions is MacFUSE, a Mac OS X implementation of the FUSE (File System in USEr Space) mechanism.

Hi, all beginner poolplayers out there, this event is set up specially with you in mind. I have recruited some advanced players who are all very patient coaches for this pool event. This would be a great opportunity for beginners to learn the basics including the rules & the fundamentals of poolplaying while socializing & meeting new friends. You would not feel the pressure even you have never played pool before. No need for coaching? No problem. Here is what I am going to do. I would divide the participants into 2 groups. If you are not interested in pool lesson, I would do the regular table rotation every 45 min so that you can meet more new players. The 2nd group would be the advanced players coaching beginners. I may rotate this group as well depending on how the turnout will be. Netscreen, the company that he co-founded in 1997, had tremendous growth. With less than 6 years, it became the third largest network security company in the world. In 2004, Juniper Network acquired the company for a whopping $4 billion, which is the biggest deal in Juniper history. After becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world, Feng is taking his next challenge to bring Chinese entrepreneurs to the world as a successful venture capitalist. In 2005, he co-founded Northern Light Venture Capital. Its portfolio includes Nasdaq companies, such as Aciton Semiconductor and Spreadtrum Communications, and the No. 1 dating site in China -- baihe.com. He has more than 15 years of technical and managerial experience in the computer, communication, and data networking industries. In 1997, Feng co-founded NetScreen Technologies, and served as the Vice President of Engineering, Chief Strategy Officer and Board member. NetScreen went public on NASDAQ in 2001 and was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2004 for $4 billion. From 2004 to 2005, Feng served as VP of Corp. Strategy at Juniper Networks. Feng was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2002 and the Innovator of the Year award in 2003. Prior to founding NetScreen, Feng worked at Intel Corp. Feng holds a MS degree in computer engineering from the University of Southern California, a MS degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University, and a MBA from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. He also holds five U.S. patents in computer system architecture and IC design. Feng serves on the Board of Directors of Hua Yuan Science and Technology Association (HYSTA), and is a board member of the Tsinghua University Foundation. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types and the number of skin cancer cases has been on the rise for the past few decades, particularly in sunny states like ours. There is a lot you can do to protect yourself and your family from skin cancer. Catching it early so that it can be treated effectively is vital. To boost awareness of the value of early detection, on Saturday, May 10, Palo Alto Medical Foundation dermatologists will provide free skin cancer screenings on a walk-in basis at the Mountain View Center. This event is open to the community; you do not have to be a patient of Camino Medical Group or the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. PAMF doctors and other medical experts on site will provide examinations as well as sunscreen samples. Education displays and information on skin cancer will be available.
