New Media Art from Germany featuring THE NUCLEAR FOOTBALL, BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN, COPYRIGHT SLAVERY, and PATRIOTIC. Curated and presented by Peter Zorn, Chairman of Werkleitz Association, Co-Director of Werkleitz Biennale and Coordinator of the European Media Artists in Residence Exchange. Media artists explore media conventions by trespassing them. They are well aware of the underlying powers, they use or subvert. Media art has its roots in the avant-garde of the 20s and can be defined as a medium that needs electricity for its creation and reception. Today Media Art has expanded to a variety of disciplines, such as experimental film, „Expanded Cinema“ and a variety of video installations and performances, as well as computer- and interactive web art. Zorn will present and comment on new media art from Germany, including the spectacular THE NUCLEAR FOOTBALL (Korpys/Loeffler) a commentary on George Bush's lightening-fast 2002 visit to Berlin. The title refers to the “President’s Emergency Satchel", which always closely accompanies an American president to enable him to launch a nuclear attack while away from fixed command centers. BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN makes the argument that file sharing is not a crime, whereas COPYRIGHT SLAVERY, is an over-the-top rant against the commercializing and copyrighting of media art. PATRIOTIC, a spoof about the Patriot Act teams with singing soldiers in bogus uniforms. Read more about Werkleitz: www.werkleitz.de The program features: Snke Gutenberg (ATTAC) Stop GATS! Video, DE 2003, 1' A text-only cinema spot against the consequences of the GATS agreement on national film culture. The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) is an international treaty of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that regulates the multilateral trading system of services. Sebastian Ltgert a-clip: Burn Hollywood Burn Video, D 2003, 0:53' Morpheus in 'The Matrix': "They are guarding all the doors, they are holding all the keys, but they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be " In plain language: File Sharing is not a Crime! Fight Intellectual Property! Der Plan Copyright Slavery Video, DE 2004, 2:30' German avantgarde group Der Plan drive through the narrow streets of a fictitious town in a convertible, they built themselves. Copyright Slavery is an over-the-top rage against the commercialization of media art. Rexi Tom Weller/Ruben Malchow Fest der Liebe (Festival of Love) Video, D 2005, 8 Celebration of Love is a poisonous attack on the prologue of Leni Riefenstahl's Celebration of Beauty. The film puts in question the film technique of Celebration of Beauty and parodies the content and values of the propaganda film. Dorothee Wenner Our foreign country: Jehangir Modi about German Gemuetlichkeit Video, D 2002, 12' One out of 10 short documentaries about 10 different inside-outside views on Berlin. Jehangir Modi is an interieur designer from Bombay who wants to know what the German Gemuetlichkeit is all about. Peter Zorn (*1967) co founded Werkleitz Gesellschaft, the Center for Media Art in Saxony-Anhalt, East Germany. Since 1993, Werkleitz Biennale provides an international forum for media art and is the biggest festival of its kind in the New German Member States and well-known throughout Germany and Europe. Peter Zorn lives and works as film maker, producer and media arts curator (i.e. for the Goethe-Institut) in Halle and Werkleitz. His recent works include the HD-DVD Edition Film as Art 100 years of experimental cinema in shorts to be published 2009.

Magicians. Musicians. Technocrats. Photographers. Film makers. Scientists. Humorists. Some of the most dynamic, innovative, eclectic and refreshing talents in our culture are coming to EG, 2-4 December at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. 50+ presenters, 500 attendees, luxurious schmooze breaks, absolutely fabulous food and a spectacular setting in the Richard Meier-designed mountaintop Getty campus. EG was launched by Richard Saul Wurman (founder of TED and producer of more than 80 books). I'm thrilled to be directing it. This isn't just another entertainment gathering. L.A. is perhaps the most dynamic and startling city in America, but the entertainment industry is just the tip of an iceberg — yet it has a way of supercharging and inspiring talents in all fields. EG reflects that. Are you looking for a central theme or another star-studded bash? Well, you can always find a business workshop or Oscar party. At EG you are as likely to be chatting with Amy Tan about China, as with Frank Gehry about ice hockey. What has Tim Kring (creator of NBC's HEROES) been talking about with Nicholas Negroponte (founder of One Laptop Per Child)? How did Lincoln Center make a billion dollar gamble on a young architect to reinvent their landmark campus? Are you still suffering from lousy penmanship? Perhaps you should buttonhole Donald Jackson... If there is a unifying theme, it is simply that EG unabashedly brings together the best of the best, knowing that your most valuable idea is the one you haven't had yet. You will probably uncover more than one at EG. A partial list of presenters is below, and I can't wait. More will be announced soon. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sex, secrets and performance art video blogs with a George Michael beat - just another typical day when you're a teenager in Salem, Oregon. L.A. Theatre Works records "Speech & Debate", the fiercely funny and timely new play by Stephen Karam that just completed an extended, sold-out run at New York's Roundabout Underground. Gideon Glick (Broadway's "Spring Awakening") reprises the role he created in the New York production; he is joined by Andrea Bowen (Julie Mayer on "Desperate Housewives", "Les Miserables" on Broadway) and Bobby Steggert (Outer Critics Circle nominee for Broadway's "110 in the Shade"). The final recording will air on LATW's nationally syndicated, weekly radio theater series, The Play's The Thing. They may go to the same school, but misfits Solomon, Diwata and Howie have never met and their teachers and peers just don’t take them seriously - until a sex scandal involving one of their teachers brings them together. Soon they realize that three voices are stronger than one. And since their school has no speech and debate squad, maybe this is their chance to be heard at last - by the school and even the world. "Speech & Debate" enjoyed a hugely successful and critically acclaimed run. The New York Times called it "A triumph… hilarious and immensely entertaining," while Variety wrote, "bristling with vitality, wicked humor, terrific dialogue and a direct pipeline into the zeitgeist of contemporary youth." New York's Newsday said, " 'Speech & Debate' beautifully nails the indirection and crossed-wire communication of teenagers bubbling over with contradictory needs and insecurities." LATW Producing Artistic Director Susan Loewenberg was hooked. "The opportunity to do this play was one we couldn't pass up," she explains. "We scrambled to fit it into our spring schedule. The originality and passion of this young writer impelled me to include Stephen's work in our current season." For three decades, L.A. Theatre Works has been the leading radio theater company in the United States, committed to using innovative technologies to preserve and promote significant works of dramatic literature and bringing live theater into the homes of millions. LATW's radio theater series, The Play's The Thing, airs weekly on 89.3 FM KPCC in Southern California; 89.7 WGBH in Boston; 91.5 FM WBEZ in Chicago; 94.9 KUOW in Seattle; 93.5 FM KRTS "Marfa Public Radio" in Texas; 90.5 FM KUT in Austin;88.9 FM KUNM in Albuquerque; 94.1 KPFA in Northern California; 91.1 FM KRCB in Sonoma County; 89.1 KUOR in Redlands; as well as on many other public radio stations nationwide and XM Satellite Radio. Selected programs from LATW are also heard internationally over BBC World Service, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Telefis Eirann (Ireland), Radio Hong Kong, and Radio New Zealand. The L.A. Theatre Works Audio Theatre Collection is available in bookstores, libraries, through their catalog, digitally on itunes, overdrive.com, audible.com, and on the L.A. Theatre Works website at www.latw.org. Performances of "Speech & Debate" take place on Wednesday, May 14 at 8 pm; Thursday, May 15, at 8 pm; Friday, May 16 at 8 pm; Saturday, May 17 at 3 pm; and Sunday, May 18 at 4 pm. Tickets range from $20.00 to $47.00. The Skirball Cultural Center is located at 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd, off the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Santa Monica Mountains (exit Skirball Center Drive). For tickets and information, call the L.A. Theatre Works box office at (310) 827-0889 or go to www.latw.org.
