Bert Jansch

Where: Lola's Room (Crystal Ballroom)

Date: 2007-08-28 21:00:00

Type:

$10 advance, $12 day of show 21 and over Bert Jansch, legendary acoustic guitarist and songwriter, surely ranks as one of the most influential musicians of all time. Nick Drake, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler and Beth Orton all count themselves as devotees, and now another generation of exciting artists, led by Devendra Banhart (who appears, along with Beth Orton and others, on Jansch's new album), are discovering the U.K. folk-rock giant for themselves. Jansch began performing his unique synthesis of folk, blues and jazz on the U.K. folk club scene of the early 1960s. His first album, the self-titled Bert Jansch, caused a sensation and is cited by legions of guitar players as a major inspiration. Next came It Don't Bother Me, followed by the hugely influential Jack Orion, where Jansch explored innovative treatments of the traditional folk ballad. He continued this experimentation in Pentangle, the unique acoustic supergroup he formed with John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox and Danny Thompson; after their split in 1973, Jansch returned to a prolific solo career. His 23rd solo album, the highly acclaimed The Black Swan, appeared in 2006, Produced by Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart's Cripple Crow, Joanna Newsom's Milk-Eyed Mender), it features some of the latest musicians on the contemporary folk scene, including Banhart, Beth Orton, Otto Hauser (Espers, Vetiver), Helena Espvall (Espers), and Kevin Barker (Currituck Co.) "As much of a great guitar player as Jimi [Hendrix] was, Bert Jansch is the same thing for acoustic guitar…and my favourite" – Neil Young "He completely re-invented guitar playing and set a standard that is still unequalled today" – Johnny Marr
