Late show is 21+. $15. Buy tickets here. In the grand tradition of musicians honoring their predecessors, The Triple Door is proud to host Nelson sings Nilsson, featuring Harvey Danger’s Sean Nelson singing the classics of late songwriter Harry Nilsson. Inspired by Nilsson’s own 1969 recording "Nillson sings Newman," in which Nillson showcases the work of then unknown songwriter Randy Newman, Sean collaborated with respected producer Steve Fisk to record "Nelson sings Nilsson." The record includes 14 Nilsson songs--some hits, some deep cuts, some unreleased gems--plus an 8-minute medley (very much in the style of the Beatles pastiche from Harry's debut LP.) Elaborately arranged with strings, brass, guitar, bass, drums, and a kids choir, the album weaves a rich, theatrical musical tapestry to wrap around Nelson's full-throated vocal stylings. With influences ranging from rock to Vaudeville, from music hall to Broadway, from Tin Pan Alley to Erik Satie, "Nelson Sings Nilsson" offers an idiosyncratic showcase for one of the late-20th century's most idiosyncratic composer/arrangers. After the success of the album, Sean began touring locally to sold-out crowds. Don’t miss a chance to see him perform Harry Nillson classics such as "Everybody’s Talking" and "Me and My Arrow" on the Triple Door Mainstage with a 27 piece rock band/orchestra! Co-editors Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders will read from their new anthology, She's Such A Geek, and discuss the growing role of women in the sciences, fandom, gaming and other areas. They'll have a question and answer session about the book. More about the book: She's Such A Geek is collection of essays by nearly two dozen female geeks of all persuasions talking about their lives, careers and hobbies. They tell about how they fell in love with science, technology or role-playing games. They explain how those pursuits have shaped their lives. And they reveal the challenges -- and triumphs -- they've experienced in mostly male-dominated fields. Raves for the book: New York Times Technology reporter Katie Hafner called the book "exhilerating, hilarious, inspiring and infuriating." Xeni Jardin from BoingBoing says she takes "great joy in the she-nerd spirit evident throughout this book." Kim Stanley Robinson calls the book "sharp, interesting, and funny." And Ladies Home Journal listed it in the "our favorites" list for December 2006. About Annalee Newitz: Annalee Newitz is a writer who covers the collisions between technology and media, culture and science. She is a contributing editor at Wired, and writes the nationally-syndicated column Techsploitation. You can also find her writing in Popular Science, New Scientist, and The Believer. She is the author of Pretend We're Dead, a political analysis of monster movies, and Vice President of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility. About Charlie Anders: Charlie Anders is the author of Choir Boy (Soft Skull Press 2005) which won a Lambda Literary Award. She publishes other magazine and organizes the award-winning Writers With Drinks reading series. Her writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Salon.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, McSweeney's.net, Pindeldyboz.com, ZYZZYVA and many other magazines and anthologies.
