Greater Worcester Humanists Meeting - Darwin Day 2008

Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester

Date: 2008-04-08 19:00:00

Type:

To celebrate Darwin Day we will have a special guest speaker, Abigail Hafer, professor of biology from Curry College. She'll be giving a presentation called "Unintelligent Design," which is a methodical debunking of so-called "Intelligent Design" theory. The presentation "Unintelligent Design," by Curry College Professor Abigail Hafer is "a richly entertaining evolutionist's view of the human body. Though no less beautiful or marvelous for being flawed, she argues, the human body has many faulty design features that would never have been the choice of an intelligent creator. Citing engineering flaws from the partial blockage of the eye’s retina to the vulnerable external positioning of men’s testes, Hafer illustrates her points with wit and erudition. Professor Hafer holds a B.A. in biology from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. from Oxford University in England." - from Curry College

Colossal Yes is Utrillo of Comets on Fire. A new year, 2006, marks the return of Vancouver's Dan Bejar with his seventh full-length release under the moniker Destroyer. If there has been any precedent set or pattern developed over the previous six recordings in the Destroyer canon, it's that Bejar holds little regard for convention or expectations. Never one to rest on laurels, each successive Destroyer release always explores new sonic territories and ideas.

The Proclaimers, Peter Moren

Where: The Middle East

Date: 2008-04-22 20:00:00

Type:

Scottish twins Craig and Charlie Reid have been playing together as The Proclaimers since 1987. Their harmony-laden pop brand of Celtic rock draws comparisons to the Everly Brothers, with their 1988 effort, 'Sunshine on Leith,' yielding the hit 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles).' Peter Moren, frontman for the breakout indie trio Peter Bjorn and John, is hitting the road on his own in support of his solo effort, 'The Last Tycoon.'
