The Trial

Where: Harvard Film Archive

Date: 2007-04-18 21:15:00

Type:

Directed by Orson Welles France/Italy/West Germany 1962, 35mm, b/w, 118 min. With Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider Hailed upon its release as a masterpiece by European critics but dismissed as a failure by the British and American press, The Trial is arguably Welles's finest film after Citizen Kane (and with Kane, the only other film over which he exercised complete creative control). Welles's rendition of Franz Kafka's nightmarish story of a man arrested for a crime that is never explained to him features Anthony Perkins as Josef K., a twitchy individual pursued by a repressive bureaucracy, obsessed by an undefined guilt, and bewildered by the burden of living. With its jazz sound track, shadowy black-and-white cinematography, angled close-ups, and labyrinthine spaces, The Trial gives cinematic expression to Kafka's complex parable of contemporary existence.

Dorchester native Norm Crosby, king of the malaprop, is a comedy veteran known for his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, Tonight Show, Dean Martin Show and The Norm Crosby Comedy Shop. Crosby’s career, which began in small nightclubs around Massachusetts, has spanned 40-plus years. He honed his craft in the Borscht Belt with greats like Milton Berle and Jerry Lewis, and on 60’s and 70’s television shows. He has been a guest co-host of Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Telethon for many years, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, placed between Jack Benny and Red Skelton, at Crosby’s request. He has performed for Presidents and Kings, and returns home for a very special evening of laughs with some great comic friends. Joining Crosby will be a stellar lineup of Boston comedy veterans, including Don Gavin, known as “the Godfather of Boston comedy,” whose rapid-fire everyman comedy is side-splittingly funny. He was one of the founders of the Ding-Ho Comedy Club in Cambridge, which launched some of the funniest and most original comedy talent in the country. Tony V., star of stage, screen and neighborhood bar, is now a high-falutin’ TV star, with a big role as a conflicted cop on Showtime’s critically acclaimed Brotherhood, and a recurring role on Denis Leary’s Rescue Me. He started his stand-up career in 1983, and as a former mental health caseworker with a degree in psychology, is one of the few comics who has been able to use his formal education in his work. Brian Kiley was a seasoned veteran of the Boston comedy scene before becoming an Emmy-nominated staff writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1994. He has appeared on Conan, as well as Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. He is one of the country’s most inspired and original comedic minds. Patty Ross is a comedian and actress who has appeared on My Wife and Kids, Two Guys and a Girl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Rosanne.
