FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 31st, 2008 San Francisco Premiere Of ‘Justicia Now’ THE DAVID & GOLIATH OF OIL: JUSTICA NOW TELLS THE STORY OF A COURAGEOUS PEOPLE CALLED LOS AFECTADOS (THE AFFECTED ONES) WHO ARE TAKING ON CHEVRONTEXACO in THE LARGEST ENVIRONMENTAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN HISTORY Thursday April 17th 2008 8pm at The Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St. San Francisco. ( Sliding Scale Donation ) Featuring appearances by PABLO FAJARDO, DARYL HANNAH, STUART TOWNSEND IN PERSON: FILMMAKERS & KEY FILM CHARACTERS ‘Justicia Now’ is a documentary about ChevronTexaco's toxic legacy in the Northern Ecuadorian region of the Amazon rainforest - and a courageous group of people called Los Afectados (The Affected Ones) who are seeking justice for the ensuing cancer, sickness and death in the largest environmental class action lawsuit in history. “I was there. I witnessed the Big Oil crimes these multinational oil companies are committing on human life and the environment! Seeing is believing and in this day of media and technology, it is our responsibility to shed light on these issues through our work. ‘Justicia Now’ is doing just that!” said Q’Orianka Kilcher, actress and Amazon Watch Youth Ambassador. From 1964 to 1992, in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, ChevronTexaco has intentionally dumped 18 billion gallons of toxic waste (over 3 times the amount of oil spilt in the Exxon Valdez disaster) in an area the size of Rhode Island that was home to six indigenous tribes, one of which is now extinct. For those who remain, water supplies are completely contaminated and serious health issues such as cancer, leukemia, birth defects and skin disease run rampant, affecting every family. Justica Now takes the viewer to the heart of the battle in Ecuador to meet the people waging this epic lawsuit - one of the largest environmental lawsuits in history - brewing between Los Afectados (The Affected Ones, a group of 30,000 settlers and indigenous people) and ChevronTexaco's army of international lawyers whose attitude towards this has been a combination of strong-armed intimidation and complete denial. Jusica Now follows Pablo Fajardo (2008 CNN Hero Award Winner), a humble unassuming man born the same year Texaco came to Ecuador, who put himself through law school and now leads his community to hold ChevronTexaco accountable despite facing death threats, his brother being murdered (mistaken for Pablo) and his office containing over 80,000 court documents being burglarized. Is this big business or organized crime? It's time for action, it's time for Justicia Now! Mofilms is an Bay Area independent media organization dedicated to making solution oriented documentaries about social and environmental issues. CARNIVAL FEVER: Three nights of Gritty, Hard-hitting, night of Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Latin, Afrobeat, Afro-Reggae, funk and Reggae The origins of carnival date back to the ancient Greek spring festival in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine. The Romans adopted the celebration with Bacchanalia (feasts in honor of Bacchus, the Roman equivalent to Dionysus), and Saturnalia, where slaves and their masters would exchange clothes in a day of drunken revelry. Saturnalia was later modified by the Roman Catholic Church into a festival leading up Ash Wednesday. It quickly evolved into a massive celebration of indulgences - one last gasp of music, food, alcohol, and sex before Lent - before the 40 days of personal reflection, abstinence, and fasting until Easter (not exactly what the Church probably had in mind). 40 days of purging sins, preceded by a week filled with virtually every known sin. The word itself comes from Latin, "Carne Vale" or "Farewell to the Flesh". Join us May 23-25 at 12 Galaxies for Carnival Fever. Three nights of gritty, hard-hitting night of Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Latin, Afrobeat, Funk and Reggae music. Featuring Bay Area's Top live bands and Dj's. Appearing will be Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, Bat Makumba, Cheb i Sabbah, Aphrodesia, Bayonics, Boco do Rio, Native Elements, Manicato, Fuga, Dj Sep, Dj Jeremiah and the Afrobeat Nation, and Dj Vanka
