CAN YOU TELL A LIE? FIND OUT AT THE “THE LIAR SHOW” AT COMIX NEW YORK, NY – The Liar Show features four performers telling gripping, personal stories that will make you laugh or just make you glad you don't live with them. But listen carefully, because only three of these basically honest people are telling the truth. The fourth is making it all up. Find out who the liar is at Comix Thursday, November 29th at 8:00 PM After enjoying the stories, the audience is invited to interrogate the four performers, poke holes in their epic tales and ultimately decide which fast talker is playing everybody for a fool. Those who correctly identify the big Liar of the night walk away with a prize--an unbelievable "I Can Tell A Lie" t-shirt--amid a bitter chorus of, "Congratulations, Einstein," from the empty-handed losers. The show's creator and host, Andy Christie, is a writer and storyteller whose work has appeared in the NY Times. He is also The Moth's 2007 GrandSlam Storytelling Champion. "Liar" storytellers who will appear at Comix include: Ophira Eisenberg -- Comedy Central; US Magazine's Fashion Police James Braly -- Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Whitney Museum, NPR Steve Osborne -- retired NYPD detective Peter Lubell – IFC, NPR THU, NOV 29 @ 8:00 PM Comix 353 West 14th Street New York, NY 10014 Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 the day-of-show, plus a two item minimum. Youth Brigade LA's Youth Brigade formed in 1980 amid the punk scene explosion in Southern California by brothers Shawn, Mark, and Adam Stern. They have established YOUTH BRIGADE as one of the most powerful, independent groups in North America over the course of their 25+ years of existence. About Liquid Swords: Though the album was credited to GZA alone, there are numerous guest appearances from the entire Wu-Tang Clan, like all their earlier solo albums. Liquid Swords is characteristic of the Wu-Tang Clan in its minimalist, menacing and ominous beats by producer RZA, and its cinematic themes relating to Asian cinema, particularly Samurai cinema. GZA also covers many of his other themes as well, such as chess, crime etc. The album begins with a monologue from a little boy; his monologue, and many of the other skits scattered throughout the album, are from the cult film Shogun Assassin. These samples, along with eerie beats gives Liquid Swords a distinctive, creepy, unsettling sound, proving influential to many subsequent East Coast hip hop artists. text GZA2 to 467467 to get your tickets VIA ShopText or click http://knittingfactory.com/show.php?event_id=108383 for ticketweb info

Chemlab Throughout the 90s, CHEMLAB blazed a fearsome trail through the indie music scene, breaking every convention of driving machine rock. Their music exploits the chaos found when the oil-slick of digital dance grooves meets the sonic, churning water of the guitar's organic roar. U.S.S.A. Bassist/programmer/producer Paul Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks) and guitarist/composer Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk) got together, wrote some material, liked what they heard, and recruited an unknown but extremely talented young vocalist/multi-instrumentalist named Gary Call. They wrote some more material, liked that too, and then recruited drum wizard Johnny Rabb to finish the lineup. Skeleton Key The band remains a tough songwriting machine employing their trademark junkyard-dog aesthetic and exploring an eclectic subject matter through metaphor and esoteric characterizations. Witness the simultaneously funny, anachronistic, and spooky voice that is uniquely Skeleton Key. ADV $15 // DOS $18 ShopText and Save! Text CHEMLAB5 to 467467 for tix Buy tix online at Ticketweb

Marc Ribot Marc Ribot was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1954. As a teen, he played guitar in various garage bands while studying with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. In 1978, Ribot crossed the river to New York City, where he served as sideman for such musicians as jazz organist Jack McDuff and legendary soul shouter Wilson Pickett. Ribot began his five-year stint as a member of the Lounge Lizards (John Lurie’s innovative and influential Downtown jazz ensemble) in 1984. At the time, Marc’s playing, which blended elements of classic Blues guitar with the ironic No Wave/Knitting Factory aesthetic, caught the ear of a number of artists who were also interested in amalgamating and disrupting disparate musical traditions. Ribot performed on some of these singer/songwriter’s finest records, including Elvis Costello’s SPIKE, MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE, and KOJAK VARIETY; Marianne Faithful’s BLAZING AWAY; and Tom Waits’ RAIN DOGS, BIG TIME, FRANK’S WILD YEARS, MULE VARIATIONS, and the recently released REAL GONE. FIRST & THIRD MONDAY of Every Month @ 7pm FREE ! Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series Barbes - 376 9th St (at Sixth Ave) Park Slope, Brooklyn subway: F to Seventh Ave www.brooklynindependent.com MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18 @ 7pm * Guest Curated by Michael Tully * All Shorts Program Michael Tully Presents The Best Short Films of the 21st Century I'LL SCRATCH YOURS Directed by Danette Jackson 5 min I figured I should open the evening with The Best Short Film of the 20th Century. I'll Scratch Yours was made by a forty-something female ex-postal worker who attended the North Carolina School of the Arts as an undergraduate in the late 1990s (or at least that's how it was explained to me). As for the film itself, it's like nothing you've ever seen before. Take a black porno. Now remove the porno. Now remove the black. That's I'll Scratch Yours. This film changed my life forever. BY MODERN MEASURE Directed by Matthew Lessner 6 min - 2006 - USA - French w/ English Subtitles - B&W My favorite short film of 2007, Matthew Lessner's By Modern Measure is a masterfully executed gem, which uses beautifully grainy black-and-white film and French New Wave techniques to comment on just how difficult it is to make an honest romantic connection in our commercialized and corny modern world. But there's a sincerity and gravity to the work that makes it more just mere satire and elevates it to greatness. This, my friends, is what short films should be. WEEKEND Directed by Henrik Andersson 32 min - 2006 - Sweden - Swedish w/ English Subtitles - Color There has never been a more apt occasion to use the word b-i-z-a-r-r-e than when describing Henrik Andersson’s hilarious and oddly terrifying Weekend, which concerns a seemingly innocent weekend in a cabin for two Swedish couples that is turned upside down by… well, I’m not sure what exactly. To say anything more would be to ruin the surprise. Imagine if 1970s-era Wes Craven directed a Mentos commercial and that doesn’t even begin to capture the insanity that is Weekend. A CATALOG OF ANTICIPATIONS Directed by David Lowery 12 min - 2007 - USA - English - Color From one of the sharpest writing minds in the independent film world comes a strikingly gorgeous triptych that takes my breath away every time I watch it. In three segments, David Lowery blends fantasy, reality, and the avant-garde to create something that surpasses labels and categories and strikes a deeper, more universal human chord. Separately, these works are striking. Together, they're downright transcendent. WE'RE GOING TO THE ZOO Directed by Josh Safdie 15 min - 2006 - USA - English - Color With the help of some friends (Samuel Lisenco, Brett Jutkiewicz, Dan Samiljan), writer/director Josh Safdie has begun to establish an incredibly distinct cinematic voice. We're Going to the Zoo is a minor miracle, a short film that is whimsical, comical, poignant, and unexpectedly moving. It's a rare treat to see something that so perfectly reflects an artist's approach to life, and this striking short does just that. I worry about the poor, unfortunate soul who isn't completely swept away by We're Going to the Zoo. I'm sure you will be. FOXY AND THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD Directed by David Zellner 9 min - 2005 - USA - English - Color Epic stupidity. Slapstick profundity. The Zellner Brothers are not easily classifiable, and while I'm a fan of everything they do, this short remains my favorite. For one, I simply can't conceive of two human beings sitting down and coming up with an idea like this, and then executing it to such perfection. Foxy and the Weight of the World has no cinematic precedent. Or if it does, I haven't seen it yet. THE INTERVENTION Directed by Jay Duplass 15 min - 2005 - USA - English - Color It's hard for me not to refer to The Intervention as My Favorite Short Film Ever, and for these purposes, I will stick with that grand, lofty statement. When I first saw this film a few years ago, I had simultaneous pangs of exhilaration and jealousy, for I felt like someone had literally reached into my brain and pulled off something I had always wanted to do. As with my favorite filmmaking, The Intervention feels realer than real life, presenting a situation that is awkward, uncomfortable, hilarious and dramatic at the exact same time. How do these guys do it? FIRST & THIRD MONDAY of Every Month @ 7pm FREE !Brooklyn Independent Cinema SeriesBarbes - 376 9th St (at Sixth Ave)Park Slope, Brooklynsubway: F to Seventh Ave

A Talent Marketing Company In the world of fashion and entertainment, the industries are inundated with agents, directors, and those promising talents that they will “make it big”. What the talented, and the businesses in general need, however, are realistic and specific goals. InterFACE Talent Network does exactly that. What the proficient team at InterFACE knows is that talent will emerge on its own—it just needs direction. InterFACE Talent Network is not an agency, and it isn’t a group compromised of casting directors telling clients what they want to hear. InterFACE Talent Network is a company devoted to the talent brought to them, and brings aspiring models, actors, and singers as close to the industry as they’d like. Taking their name from an old Funkadelic track, Chicago's Urge Overkill began in 1985 and played to a mostly underground fanbase, with a brief breakout into the mainstream through their cover of Neil Diamond's 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon' on the soundtrack to 'Pulp Fiction.' Originally disbanding in 2000, Nash Kato, Blackie Onassis and Eddie "King" Roesser reunited for shows in late 2003 On its new self-titled EP, Suffrajett incorporates rock jams, heavy funk basslines and aggressive rhythms with leadsinger/power girl Simi providing searing vocals.

HER SPACE HOLIDAY W/ LYMBYC SYSTYM Putting some space between himself and the computer that has provided the basis for so much of his recent work, Marc Bianchi has taken the last two years to focus on what got him into music in the first place, writing connective songs and working out the layers of sound he hears in his head. The results are a new persona, XOXO, Panda, and the reinforcement of the feelings of personal and artistic freedom that drive his music. Loose and carefree arrangements of guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, shakers, glockenspiel, and drums lay the foundation for vocal storytelling sing-a-longs. XOXO, Panda And The New Kid Revival is a brilliant calling card for Her Space Holiday’s newly awakened alter-ego, and a watershed moment in his growth as a songwriter and performer. Lymbyc Systym’s has made many new friends in the last year and a half as they’ve toured in support of their Mush Records debut, Love Your Abuser. They’ve asked some of those friends – The Album Leaf, The One AM Radio, Daedelus, This Will Destroy You, and Back Ted-N-Ted – to remix some of the material from their album. In addition Mush Records’ Black Country Bibio and Austinite Reference turn in masterful reworkings. Each artist adds their unique touches to Lymbyc Systym’s already epic source material, Working simultaneously as a companion piece to 2007’s Love Your Abuser and as a compelling album on its own, Love Your Abuser Remixed is further testament to Lymbyc Systym’s powerful presence in the instrumental music scene.
