DOORS 8:00 PM ADV $15 // DOS $20 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (a/k/a Don Van Vliet) is considered one of the seminal geniuses of American music, poetry, and art. An outspoken visionary who emerged in the mid-60's from the wilds of the Mojave Desert (where he enjoyed a childhood friendship with Frank Zappa), Captain Beefheart blazed his own trail in music over a dozen groundbreaking albums with his group The Magic Band, beginning with their 1967 surrealist blues statement of first principle's "Safe as Milk", continuing through what are generally considered their 2 landmark avant-masterpieces, 1969's "Trout Mask Replica" and 1971's "Lick My Decals Off, Baby", and finishing with 1982's uncompromising return to form "Ice Cream for Crow". With music combining avant-rock, free-jazz and Delta blues in equal measure, and lyrics dealing with ecological concerns, human foibles, and mankind run amuck, Beefheart has been cited by everyone from David Lynch to Joe Strummer to Bono to David Byrne to Johnny Rotten to Robert Plant as a hero and inspiration. A child prodigy sculptor and painter, after ceasing to make music in 1982. Don Van Vliet began an active painting career, and his canvases continue to be exhibited in high profile galleries around the world, where they fetch impressive prices. Tonight the Knitting Factory celebrates the genius of a true American avatar, beginning with a screening of rare Beefheart film clips and documentaries, followed by a reading of Van Vliet's poems by some very special guests. The night will be capped with the first NYC appearance in several years of FAST 'N BULBOUS, The Captain Beefhyeart Project-- featuring ex-Magic Bandman guitarist extraordinaire Gary Lucas on guitar, and arranged and conducted by the Microscopic Septet's Phillip Johnston--and featuring Dave Sewelson (baritone sax), Joe Fielder (trombone), Rob Henke (trumpet), Jesse Krakow (bass), and Richard Dworkin (drums). The band will play selections from their acclaimed first album "Pork Chop Blue Around the Rind" (Cuneiform), and will debut new versions of Don Van Vliet's classic compositions from their forthcoming second album.

Mudhoney Performing Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles Doors 7pm 21+ $20 tickets http://www.myspace.com/mudhoney When Mudhoney issued its debut EP, Superfuzz Bigmuff (named after the vintage distortion pedals used by guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner), and a bilious Stooges-worthy single, "Touch Me I'm Sick," it birthed Seattle grunge. Arm and Turner are Green River alums, just like Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, who went on to form Pearl Jam. Whereas Pearl Jam updated the anthemic possibilities of early '70s arena rock, Mudhoney played as if it had emerged from the same '60s garage in which Pacific Northwest heroes the Sonics honed their no-frills assault. Equal parts alienation and inebriation, the quar-tet's music never caught on commercially like that of their peers Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. That's because Mudhoney's records boast a caustic, dirty-fingernails sound that falls just short of slipshod. - Greg Kot, Rolling Stone

Sound The Alarm Factor in healthy doses of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin with a steady diet of modern rock bands including Foo Fighters, Incubus and Stone Temple Pilots, and the band's infectious sound dilates into focus. You Me and Everyone We Know Honing the dark finesse and stingingly clever lyrical and musical sensibility of bands like Brand New, Northstar, and Say Anything, the band shows intelligence and calculation in its writing. Hot Buttered Rum Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, the band melds blues, folks, bluegrass, jazz, and rock, and the members’ varying degrees of classical training lead them to invest heavily in group composition. Rev Peyton's Big Damn Band The young 3 piece from rural Indiana, makes up for its size deficiency with a high-energy sound steeped in classic Blues tradition. With just acoustic guitar, the occasional dobro, a minimal drum kit and the always reliable washboard, the trio concocts a rousing, hyper and authentic brand of Blues that sounds like what might come out of that secret meth lab nestled deep in the backwaters of the Mississippi delta. FLOGGING MOLLY AND SPECIAL GUESTS THE FILLMORE NY @ IRVING PLAZA/17 IRVING PL WED FEB 27 '08 7:30PM DRS Also Performing: The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and special guests. The Los Angeles-based post-grunge seven-piece Flogging Molly are an interesting mix of traditional Irish music and spunky punk rock. Former Fastway acoustic guitarist/frontman and Dublin native Dave King formed the band with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player (and former pro skateboarder) Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Getting their start playing regularly at the L.A. bar Molly Malones, Flogging Molly eventually took their music to the road; their explosive and passionate live show was the heart of the band, after all, and the band toured relentlessly around the world throughout their career. Their rowdy folk-rock punk revival sound has been compared to the likes of other Irish bands such as the Pogues and Black 47, but the raucous septet opted for its own unique brashness that defied genre lines. Flogging Molly released its debut, Swagger, in March 2000 on Side One Dummy and followed up two years later with Drunken Lullabies. Crafting exuberant anthems to raise up a full Guinness to, King often used personal touchstones -- such as his childhood in a war-torn Ireland, his father's premature death, and an eight-year exile in the United States -- for the band's compelling lyrical content. Within a Mile of Home appeared in September 2004, and the band continued to hit the road hard in support. The DVD documentary Whiskey on a Sunday was issued in July 2006; it was a candid look at Flogging Molly as both a band and seven individuals, and came with a ten-song CD of acoustic and live tracks. In early 2007, as the group geared up for a U.S. headlining run, Hensley amicably departed to spend more time with his family. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Buy online tickets from TicketWeb: http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&pl=&eventId=231774 Pilfers formed in 1997, when former Toasters vocalist, Coolie Ranx joined with former Bim Skala Bim trombonist, Vinny Nobile. To complete the lineup, they recruited the Skinnerbox rhythym section of Anna Milat-Meyer, on bass and James Blanck, on drums, as well as guitar player, Nick Bacon, of The Erratics. The band released one demo tape and played many New York area shows, before self releasing their debut, self-titled album, in 1998. Response was positive enough, that the band was signed to Mojo Records, and they released Chawalaleng, one year later. Soon after their major label debut, Anna Milat-Meyer and James Blanck, left the group. Anna Milat-Meyer took a position, playing bass, in Latin Jazz band, Los Mas Valientes. Carl Barc, of the band Ever Since Day One, took over on bass and Dave Karcich of Spring Heeled Jack USA took over on drums. The band continued to tour, and build a strong fanbase. The band recorded a live show at CBGB's, intending for it to be released on CD. The album would never see release though, since the band split up in 2001. Soon after the breakup, Coolie Ranx started a solo career, recording and playing shows around the world with back up band Fear Nuttin' Band. Nick Bacon joined Lost City Angels, who were looking for a second guitarist. Nobile, Barc and Karcich, joined with Spring Heeled Jack USA guitarist, Mike Pellegrino to perform as Cenzo, for a World Trade Center benefit show in 2001. Karcich also took the drum position in Avoid One Thing, a band fronted by former Mighty Mighty Bosstones bass player, Joe Gittleman. Sadly, Karcich suffered a sudden brain aneurysm and passed away, in April of 2002. Eight months later, a tribute show was held at Toad's Place, in honor of Karcich. During a performance by Cenzo, Nobile and Barc welcomed Coolie Ranx and Nick Bacon onstage for a brief reunion of Pilfers. In November of 2005, the original five members of Pilfers, reunited at the Knitting Factory, in New York for a sold-out show. It remains to be seen if the band will continue playing together. In the meantime, Coolie Ranx continues with his solo career as Vinny Nobile and Nick Bacon continue with Cenzo and Lost City Angels, respectively. ~Knitting Factory band bio.

Trial by Laughter a show with seven comedians competing for the approval of fellow comedians, audience members, and fans on the web, all while vying for cash prizes and media exposure comes to Comix March 25th. Seven acts, known as "defendants," perform five minute sets. Defendants consist of comedians of all levels, from complete newbies to international headliners and are pre-screened by the producers to ensure that the audience gets the best show possible. "We really wanted to do something different," said Executive Producer and co-creator Steve Hofstetter. ‘Last Comic Standing’ is for seasoned veterans, and many new talent nights in the city don't have any actual industry watching. Trial by Laughter is a show for talented comics who just need a break." The show also features two guests and two headliners, as well as regular hosts Steve Hofstetter and Moody McCarthy. The winner chosen by an equal combination of judge, audience, & web votes, is invited back to compete again on the following show. A three-camera shoot, Trial by Laughter features broadcast partners like National Lampoon Radio (XM), the forthcoming Comedy Express TV network, and LiveVideo.com. All headliners will stay after the show to answer Defendants’ questions, and a member of programming for Comix, will be watching every show. Indiana's Murder by Death layers the vocal sounds of an old saloon with the haunting strings of an Hungarian folk dance and the hard driving rhythms of pure rock n' roll, producing what Stuff magazine has called "lush, orchestrated songs," somehow simultaneously reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Radiohead. Equal parts appalachian ghost songs, civil-war-era gospel rave ups, and dilapidated punk vision, o'death's possessed hysteria brings new life to the exhausted modern country sound. Death-centric, yet uplifting, this band is invoking dead music in a modern context.

I had to post about this event, it's such a great, great night of music... The Piamenta Band and Issac Bitton are doing a Purim show at the Highline Ballroom on Thu., March 20th - these are two acts that are idolized by Matisyahu & I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up and sat in... The best part is that The Fatties, one of my favorite jam bands from back in the Wetlands days(blues, funk, rock) are headlining the early show and hit at 9pm - so for $15 (instead of $35 for Piamenta/Bitton) I'm going to go early and get to see all the bands LevYetan and Rock of David are also playing... enjoy!!!

"Jangly pop guitar riffs and catchy throwback English-rock vocals fill their sophomore album, Sinners Stick Together but that doesn't mean the Sterns shy away from substance. "All Saints" exudes an anti-war sentiment and the still-whistling-it-hours-after-first-listen "Supreme Girl" is an imagined tongue-in-cheek rendezvous between Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers and George W. Bush." – SPIN "Sinners Stick Together, the quintet's second album, is awash in bright and breezy pop music, and drenched in infectious, hook laden choruses, effervescent melodies, chirpy harmonies, and bouncy rhythms...A pop masterpiece whose music is as enticing as its themes are thought-provoking." – All Music Guide upcoming events: Mar 26 2008 8:00P Bar Bleu State College, Pennsylvania Mar 27 2008 8:00P Knitting Factory - Old Office New York, New York Mar 28 2008 8:00P Union Hall Brooklyn, New York Mar 29 2008 8:00P O’Briens Boston, Massachusetts Apr 18 2008 8:00P Dewey Beach Pop Fest Dewey beach, Delaware

The Rejection Show Comix Wednesday May 14th @ 8PM Hosted by Jon Friedman $15 Featuring the REJECTED material of: MICHAEL SHOWALTER www.michaelshowalter.net OLDE ENGLISH www.oldeenglish.org THE ONION NEWS NETWORK www.theonion.com MAGIC BRIAN www.magicbrian.com Live Music From Rejection Show House Band: THE DEFIBULATORS www.thedefibulators.com THE REJECTION SHOW is a live comedic event that embraces the rejected and “turned down” material of well-known and up and coming writers, comedians, cartoonists, artists, filmmakers, TV personalities and other artistic types who display their creative “failures” live on stage. It is a hilarious compilation of rejected material (personal and professional) and the stories that go with them. For most people, rejection means a bottle of Jack and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. But for one comedic genius, rejection has meant a cult hit show, national recognition, and now --a book deal? Rejected: Tales of the Failed, Dumped & Cancelled author Jon Friedman first gave life to The Rejection Show after he found himself passed over for a job at Comedy Central and, worse, dumped. Since then the invariably hilarious lineup of rejected New Yorker comics, Late Show sketches, and dismissive childhood sweethearts has featured a variety of New York personalities. Check out the failures and the mayhem if you are sucker for bloopers and outtakes, or just revel in others’ disappointments. -NEW YORK MAGAZINE
