SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Sunnyvale’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) will hold a public hearing to examine the prioritization of bicycle and pedestrian traffic with other traffic and parking on major roads. The hearing will be November 15, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall West Conference Room, 456 W. Olive Ave. The purpose of the hearing is hear public comment on a proposed policy change that would emphasize the use of major roads for the movement of vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and transit versus on-street parking. Based on future Council action, this could potentially change the City’s transportation planning to give priority to bike facilities, sidewalks and possibly even additional travel lanes over on-street parking. For more information, contact Traffic and Transportation Manager Jack Witthaus at (408) 730-7330, TDD (408) 730-7501, or e-mail jwitthaus@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us.

Since the '90's Sunnyvale has been capturing landfill gas and converting it to electricity, greatly reducing the City's carbon footprint. The City has purchased hybrids, electric cars, and electric golf carts. Sunnyvale put solar electric panels on the SeniorCenter; solar electric is going up on a firehouse. We have replaced incandescent bulbs with LED's in the traffic signals. Sunnyvale has replaced computer monitors with energy-sipping flat-screens and is replacing HVAC units in city buildings with more efficient ones. Our city government recycles extensively in its operations--even including cartridges from the police practice range--and at the curbside, saving tons of CO2 emissions each year. The City has broken ground for a multi-use downtown, with office, housing and shopping all within walking distance. The entire downtown redevelopment will be LEED (green) certified. Last summer, Sunnyvale became a pledging partner of Sustainable Silicon Valley, thereby committing to reducing greenhouse gasses from city government facilities and operations. Sunnyvale has completed a greenhouse gas audit of city government operations and facilities and is considering next steps. This fall, our council ratified the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, thus committing Sunnyvale to striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the entire city. First priority: to encourage the City Council to robustly implement the recently-adopted Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement. We urge Sunnyvale to organize to systematically reduce citywide emissions by: · conducting a citywide baseline greenhouse gas audit ; · setting a meaningful citywide goal for reducing them; · formulating a comprehensive Climate Protection Plan to reach the goal; · implementing the plan. Other Sunnyvale Cool Cities activities include informing ourselves, supporting other city actions to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions, reducing our own personal carbon footprints, helping others reduce theirs. Our next meeting will be this coming Thursday, November 15, 7:15 PM at Toyota of Sunnyvale (El Camino between Mary and Hollenbeck), second floor classroom.

Celebrate! We'd like to invite the Yahoo Pattern Library and YUI Library communities to Yahoo for a modest birthday celebration on February 26, 2008, beginning at 5 p.m. on the main Yahoo campus in Sunnyvale. We've opened up registration for 150 guests here on Upcoming, and signups will be on a first-come first-served basis. Registration is required due to limited space in our venue, so please sign up right away if you want to reserve yourself a spot. Christian Crumlish will give a short talk on the YPattern Library at 5:30 and the YUI Team will be updating you on plans for the coming year after that. Beer and some food will be served, and we're looking forward to a mellow evening with lots of opportunities to mingle, share ideas, and hear what you all are up to. About This EventIn February 2008, the YUI Library and the Yahoo Pattern Library turn two years old. In those short two years, YUI has grown into a richly featured library that embodies some of the best of what HTML, CSS and JavaScript make possible in the browser. With a light, fast core, YUI empowers you to build your own solutions that support all A-Grade Browsers. And when you want to pull additional functionality off the shelf, YUI is there for you with more than 30 a la carte components that range in complexity from a simple JSON Utility to the powerful DataTable, Menu and Rich Text Editor. When big established brands like CBS Marketwatch, Southwest Airlines, Northwest Airlines, IndyCar.com, and others join Yahoo in implementing YUI, you know you've got a library with great traction, momentum, and critical mass. And when you see young companies like Gaia Online, Mint, and OurStory building the future of their business with YUI at the foundation, you know what motivates us to keep improving the library every day. The Yahoo Pattern Library is the outgrowth of a long history of work at Yahoo and elsewhere. Bill Scott, now at NetFlix, took the Pattern Library "open" alongside YUI back in 2005, and it's now under the stewardship of Christian Crumlish. But the library really draws from the creativity, inspiration, and effort of the full community of user-experience specialists at Yahoo, as well as from those of you in the community who work with Christian to improve upon and interate the patterns. Christian is hard at work burnishing the existing patterns and creating new ones, and 2008 looks like another great year for this resource.

Out-Innovating Your Competition: The Flexible Development Advantage Product development guru Preston Smith will talk about embracing change (even in the middle of a development project), transforming a shifting environment from a threat into an opportunity for product innovation. Indecisive customers? Competitors with new products? Technology shifts? Learn how to make your new product development processes more adaptable. He will be joined by Chuck Blevins of LifeScan Inc. (a Johnson & Johnson company leading the blood monitoring market) to discuss techniques they used to accelerate product design and delivery including Flexible Decision-Making and Front-loaded Prototyping, as covered in Preston's recent book "Flexible Development: Building Agility for Changing Markets." Whether you work in one of many fast-moving high-tech businesses or a regulated industry subject to strict governmental controls, flexibility techniques can help in creating new offerings, managing rapidly changing environments, and innovating ahead of the competition. Preston's techniques are akin to the software industry's Agile development model, but applied to all kinds of non-software products: hardware, services, and integrated solutions. Preston Smith has led over a hundred product development workshops around the world; has spoken at dozens of professional conferences. He has taught product development at universities in the United States and Asia. In addition to publishing numerous articles and columns on advanced product development techniques, Preston is coauthor of "Developing Products in Half the Time". http://www.newproductdynamics.com/ Chuck Blevins is currently a Director within the Office of Program Management with LifeScan, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company where he has been for over 10 years. Chuck has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and has been a leader in developing new medical device products for over 18 years. $25. PDMA, SVASE, SVPMA,& PMI members & students $10.

Saturday March 15, 2008 10:00 AM-6:00 PM $699 per student All classes held at: Involution Studios 1294 Kifer Rd, Ste. 707 Sunnyvale, CA 94086 Online forms are the critical bridge between your website or online application and customers actually purchasing from or making connections with you. Seemingly small differences in form design and layout can result in a customer completing their transaction — or abandoning it entirely. This can have an impact of thousands or even millions of dollars. Capitalizing on these opportunities requires an understanding of advanced concepts and experience with key details. Students will take a deep, in-depth look at online forms as a specific aspect of web design, focusing on the impact of information, interaction and visual design in a variety of different online forms. As a student, you will participate in discussions and hands-on activities that illustrate the concepts, while giving you the chance to exercise the skills so your company’s web form design will successfully facilitate users taking the action you want. Key areas of focus include: * Input Fields * Input Labels * Validation * Feedback * Calls to Action * Visual Elements * Dynamic Inputs * Progressive Disclosure LukeW is currently Senior Principal of Product Ideation & Design at Yahoo! Inc., and Principal of LukeW Interface Designs. Luke authored the book “Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability” and his online publication, Functioning Form, is an industry-leading resource for design intelligence. Luke taught interface design at the University of Illinois and is a top-rated speaker at conferences around the world. As with all Involution Master Academy courses, this class is limited to nine students. This guarantees each student significant interaction with Luke and a unique opportunity to roll up your sleeves and put these ideas into practice with the recognized industry expert on this topic and your eight classmates.
