Japanese Kimono Tues., April 24 and Tues., May 15; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Kimono patterned with golden threads will surround you in the Gallery of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel at this talk and private viewing of the 2007 National Cherry Blossom Festival kimono exhibition. These garments, which the Japanese wore most often before Japan opened to Western culture in the 19th century, are encoded with symbolism and cultural significance that reach back over a millennium. The correct “wearing of “kimono” is a highly sophisticated art form. Participants are introduced to the choices one makes when putting on a kimono and the messages the wearer sends with these choices. Ann Marie Moeller and Paul MacLardy, co-authors of the forthcoming book Reading Kimono: Symbols and Motifs of Japanese Textiles, discuss the erudition and technical skill displayed by the artisans who create kimonos and the complexity of the messages the Japanese can discern when they are worn. Following the talk, enjoy a private tour of the exhibition. Location: Meeting in the Gallery of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 1330 Maryland Ave, SW. Parking available. Tickets: Resident Associates $24; Gen. Admission $32 Both programs are the same, register for only one. This program is limited to 30 participants. Please Call (202) 357-3030 for more information

Pontiak is a band that offers something to the music world that has been lacking as of late. This trio of brothers (Lain, Van and Jennings) uses strong guitar riffs and gritty vocals to create a pulsating rock sound. While their first EP 'White Buffalo' released in 2004 got some strong acclaim, their most recent album; 'Valley of Cats' has been creating an even larger buzz.

No tickets are required for this free event. Andy Palacio, one of the most critically acclaimed world music artists of the past year, passed away unexpectedly on January 19th, 2008. For this special concert, the Garifuna Collective will be joined by members of Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project. Other highlights include the energizing Aurelio Martinez from Honduras and Belize's hottest young punta rock singer Lloyd Augustine. Video: Andy Palacio Cut down in the prime of his career, Palacio had only recently achieved his lifelong goal of directing the global spotlight onto the remarkable music of the unique Afro-Amerindian Garifuna people of Central America. Recorded with the Garifuna Collective, an all-star, multi-generational lineup of exceptional musicians, the recording Wátina was widely applauded by the international media as one of the best world music albums of the year, if not of all time. Video: Andy Palacio Talks About Garifuna Culture In the Garifuna community, the death of a loved one is an opportunity to celebrate their life with music and dance, and the Andy Palacio Tribute Concert has been organized to commemorate this tireless cultural activist. The Andy Palacio Tribute Concert features some of the brightest talents in the Garifuna music community in what will surely be a moving and memorable concert experience.
