Re-Make

Where: ACCRC

Date: 2007-04-28 12:00:00

Type:

The ACCRC, a computer recycling center in Berkeley, will be hosting a 24-hour Rebuilding, reengineering, and just plain geeking event. The center will open its doors to Makers who want to root through the piles of old electronics and build new and working things out of the ashes. Bring your own tools and sleeping bag. We'll be figuring something out for pizza and beverages, at some point in the evening. Lovely 4th Street, Berkeley is within walking distance for food and coffee as well. At the end of the 24 hour event, we'll see what has happened. Who knows, someone might build something cool, the hydrogen car might be improved, someone might have jabbed an eye out... There is potential for things to get out of hand with power tools, engines, and vast amounts of computers. We'll need volunteers to be designated ninnies, and shout "DON'T PUT THAT IN YOUR EAR!" As such, we ask that you behave yourselves and use the time to be constructive, rather than destructive... though blowing up inkjet printers and nuking laptops is entirely likely. Sponsored by Make Magazine, Digg.com, and GigaOm. Want to sponsor the event too? Contact VonGuard. A preview: James' Hydrogen powered Lincoln.

strictly speaking Ira Glass & David Rakoff In this special evening with two of National Public Radio's most popular personalities, Ira Glass returns to Cal Performances by popular demand, following his highly successful appearance in 2005. Host and producer of This American Life, Glass is "a journalist but also a storyteller who filters his interviews and impressions through a distinctive literary imagination, an eccentric intelligence, and a sympathetic heart" (The New York Times). Rakoff, a favorite contributor to Glass' program, frequently finds himself off in the far-flung hinterlands of American culture, notebook and microphone in hand. "Like a whore with a heart of gold," says Glass with a smile, "David says all the nasty things we want to hear and then reveals that, actually, it's all about love."

Double Indemnity , Billy Wilder (U.S., 1944)

Where: Pacific Film Archive

Date: 2007-07-26 19:00:00

Type:

If there's an archetype of the noir femme fatale, Stanwyck's Phyllis Dietrichson is it: she wears her platinum wig like a steel helmet, and her anklet like the tag on a half-wild animal. When insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) arrives at her Los Feliz bungalow, Phyllis greets him in a towel, not fully covered but fully in control. As their relationship of lopsided lust and mutual opportunism proceeds, though, it becomes clear that nobody—not cunning Phyllis, and for sure not glib and clueless Walter—can control what happens down the line. The movie has been accused of misogyny, perhaps rightly. But loathsome as Phyllis is, her willing victim Walter earns equal contempt, and who wouldn't want to off the awful Mr. Dietrichson? Wilder takes such cynical delight in these characters that it starts to feel like affection. The gap between tragedy and comedy, between Phyllis Dietrichson and Preston Sturges's Lady Eve, may be no wider than an anklet. —Juliet Clark • Written by Wilder, Raymond Chandler, from the novel by James M. Cain. Photographed by John F. Seitz. With Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Porter Hall. (106 mins, B&W, 35mm, From UCLA Film and Television Archive, permission Universal)

New Century Chamber Orchestra with Margaret Batjer

Where: St. John's Presbyterian Church

Date: 2007-11-15 20:00:00

Type:

The Grammy-nominated New Century Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the next program in its 2007-08 season. The program, with performances in San Rafael, Berkeley, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, features a 17-member conductorless string orchestra with guest concertmaster Margaret Batjer. Currently the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and faculty member of the Thornton Music School at U.S.C., Margaret Batjer has selected a program that traces the arc of 122 years of Baroque music. In addition to such master composers as J.S. Bach and Handel, she includes the obscure but prolific contemporary of Vivaldi, Francesco Geminiani, and the virtuosic son of J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach. C.P.E. Bach’s strikingly different style provides a smooth bridge from the late Baroque to the cusp between periods, the Rococo, and brilliantly leads into Haydn’s early treasure, the Symphony No. 8, Le Soir. PROGRAM: F. Geminiani: Concerto Grosso No. 1 in D major Handel: Concerto Grosso in A major, Op. 6, No. 11 J. S. Bach: Brandenberg Concerto No. 4 in G major, BWV 1049 C. P. E. Bach: String Symphonie in E major Haydn: Symphony No. 8, Le Soir WHEN AND WHERE: San Rafael – Wednesday, November 14 at 7:30pm Osher Marin JCC, 200 North San Pedro Road Underwritten through the generosity of Morton B. Blatt and Peter G. Holmstrom Berkeley – Thursday, November 15 at 8pm St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue Palo Alto – Friday, November 16 at 8pm St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Avenue San Francisco – Saturday, November 17 at 8pm Florence Gould Theater, Palace of the Legion of Honor TICKETS: Individual and season tickets are on sale now at www.ncco.org and 415.357.1111 or through City Box at www.cityboxoffice.com and 415.392.4400. 3-concert orchestra subscriptions are $114/$75. Single ticket prices for the orchestra series are $42/$28 (a small service charge applies for single tickets). Half-price tickets are available for students. For more information, call the NCCO at 415.357.1111 or visit the website at www.ncco.org. The New Century Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1992, looks for fresh, exciting new ways to present classical music in the San Francisco Bay Area by combining performances of extraordinary quality with innovative programming. The guest concertmaster chooses the programs and guides the artistic vision, but the seventeen members of the orchestra perform without a conductor. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power. As part of its dedication to the future of music and to the community, the NCCO provides violin lessons to underserved students in Marin City and San Rafael’s Canal District, as well as intimate classroom performances by string quartets to students in Bay Area elementary schools. The orchestra has released four compact discs, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. About Margaret Batjer Margaret Batjer made her first solo appearance at age fifteen with the Chicago Symphony in Menotti's Violin Concerto. Since then, she has been re-engaged by the Chicago Symphony and has appeared with a succession of major orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Seattle Symphony, the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the San Jose Symphony under the direction of George Cleve and the Dallas Symphony conducted by Gunther Herbig. Margaret Batjer graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music as a student of Ivan Galamian and David Cerone. Throughout her career, she has won numerous prizes including the G.B. Dealey Awards in Dallas. Equally respected as a chamber musician, Ms. Batjer has performed regularly at the Marlboro Music Festival and on tours with "Music from Marlboro." She has appeared at the Minnesota Orchestra Sommerfest, Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, the Naples and Cremona Festivals in Italy. At the invitation of Maurizio Pollini, she performed with the Quartetto Accardo and Maestro Pollini, at the Salzburg Festival in 1995 and 1999, and on the Carnegie Hall “Perspectives” series in 2001. Ms. Batjer has held the position of Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 1998, where she regularly leads the orchestra from the concertmaster chair. In 2001, she performed the Beethoven “Triple” Concerto with Jeffrey Kahane, Yo-Yo Ma and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed the complete Beethoven and Brahms Sonatas for Violin and Piano with Jeffrey Kahane at Zipper Hall in Los Angeles. In 2005, she joined the faculty of the Thornton Music School at USC. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Joel McNeely, and two children, Joshua and Claire.

Helen Nissenbaum: Privacy in Context

Where: Berkeley iSchool Room 202

Date: 2008-04-02 16:00:00

Type:

Contemporary practices of gathering, analyzing, and disseminating personal information have placed impossible demands on the concept of privacy. The weight of these demands, in turn, is reflected in norms, laws, policies, and technical requirements that frequently seem to miss the mark, failing to negotiate a reasonable course between unbridled opportunism, on the one hand, and suspicious intransigence, on the other. This talk will present key elements in the theory of contextual integrity, which builds upon structural aspects of social life to enrich our understanding of privacy and its importance as a moral and political value. Allowing context-relative social norms and context-based social values into the scope of analysis enables nuance and subtle discrimination, often missing in other dominant approaches, in modeling and theorizing privacy as well as adjudicating and justifying particular privacy claims.

Wishful Drinking (30-below day)

Where: Berkeley Repertory Theatre

Date: 2008-02-15 20:00:00

Type:

Carrie Fisher is the life of the party on Berkeley Rep’s 40th birthday with Wishful Drinking, an uproarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover. Fisher tells a true and intoxicating story with the strong, wry wit that she poured into bestsellers like Postcards from the Edge. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in the original Star Wars when only 19 years old. Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother, Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It’s an incredible tale—from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed. Entertainment Weekly declares Drinking “drolly hysterical,” and the Los Angeles Times dubs it a “Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes.” Don’t miss this outrageous chance to get Carried away. Free small-batch spirits tasting at 7PM and 30-Below, free post-show party for 20-somethings.

Challenges Facing Collaborative Free Software Projects

Where: Berkeley iSchool Room 202

Date: 2008-02-26 12:00:00

Type:

I am interested in collaborative forms of creativity enabled or enhanced through computer networks and the ways in which law or other factors facilitate or frustrate creative innovation. A primary example of collaborative creativity that interests me is open source and free software development. Such collaborative software projects have been recognized for their promise, but increasingly face legal difficulties that threaten their long-term viability and success. In this talk I examine several of these problems posed within the realms of patent, copyright, and trademark law. Recognition of and awareness of these problems is the first step towards crafting practical solutions that could enable these collaborative creators to realize the promise they represent.

Extraordinary musicianship with plenty of sweets…" Rick has been performing and recording in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 25 years. In addition to his extensive work with vocalist Nate Pruitt in Primary Colors, Rick has been active in numerous other projects as a guitarist and composer, including leading his own ensemble which has recently attracted a new level of attention and popularity. www.rickvandivier.com

Tonight's feature is Jayde Blayde, who will perform in the 6th slot. All performers are welcome to participate in this event that has produced some of our brightest performers, including: Shawn Colvin, Dana Carvey, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Patrick Landeza. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS! One unique aspect of our Open Mic is that, unlike those held in noisy bars where people show up in spite of the fact that there's live music, you will be playing to a supportive group of friends and performers who are actually listening!!! The sign-up begins at 7:30, when the doors open. However, people with advance tickets get let in first, so they have first dibs on the list. People often start lining up as early as 7, some even come before 7 to get an advance ticket before the box office closes (at 7). Tickets are $4.50 in advance, $5.50 at the door, even if you are performing. EXCEPTION: Any performer showing up with a paying, non-performing member of the audience plays for free!!! Joyfull Noise Band / Kally Price

Where: JCC East Bay

Date: 2008-04-12 20:00:00

Type:

It should come as no surprise that the seven-piece Joyfull Noise Brass Band are a loud bunch. Blaring, in fact. The ensemble rumbles into town with a sound instantly recognizable and simultaneously unique. Finding inspiration from such disparate sources as James Brown, Lee Dorsey, Professor Longhair, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Ray Charles, the group fuses these influences into a powerful, rumpled blast of New Orleans horns, drums and feverish vocals. Kally Price and her band open the program with a mixture of tight swing, sultry jazz and barrelhouse blues from the 1930s and 1940s. Classics by Billie Holliday, Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith rule the night, but equally impressive are the little known gems. Prices selections are witty and seductive, and sung with a sweet molasses tone that shakes, rumbles and effortlessly wins you over. www.jcceastbay.org 510.848.0237 info@jcceastbay.orgEvent submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of JCCEB.

CORY DOCTOROW reads from LITTLE BROTHER. Free event. Marcus, a.k.a "w1n5t0n," is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works—and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's clumsy surveillance systems. But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they're mercilessly interrogated for days. When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself. "I'd recommend Little Brother over pretty much any book I've read this year." —Neil Gaiman Cory Doctorow is a coeditor of Boing Boing and writes columns for Make, Information Week, the Guardian online, and Locus. He has won the Locus Award three times, been nominated for the Hugo and the Nebula, and was named one of the Web's twenty-five influencers by Forbes magazine. He hopes you'll use technology to change the world.

Integrating Computing into the Statistics Curricula

Where: UC Berkeley

Date: 2008-07-14 00:00:00

Type:

Computing is an increasingly important element of statistical research and practice. It is an essential tool in our daily work, it shapes the way we think about statistics, and broadens our concept of statistical science. Although many agree that there should be more computing in the statistics curriculum and that statistics students need to be more computationally capable and literate, it can be difficult to determine how the curriculum should change because computing has many dimensions. The aim of the workshop is to bring together faculty for a hands-on program where we cover material and work on actual labs/projects/exercises that would make up courses in modern statistical computing and data technologies. The goal is to assist faculty in changing their statistics programs in innovative ways to incorporate more computing in existing courses and to add new courses to the curriculum.
