Free and open to the public, followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above. Andrew Keen CULT OF THE AMATEUR: How Today's Internet is killing our culture ABSTRACT: In its annual “person of the year” issue, Time Magazine reflected a shift in our culture by electing “YOU” in place of the traditional leaders and thinkers such as FDR, Ghandi or Martin Luther King, Jr. Thanks to the democratization of the internet and what is now known as Web 2.0, anyone with a computer is given equal footing and the ability to be heard. In today’s self-broadcasting world, if you have an opinion, you can publish a blog, post a video on YouTube?, or alter an entry on Wikipedia. But is this really such a good thing? Audiocafe.com founder and Silicon Valley insider Andrew Keen describes how Web 2.0 threatens our culture’s moral and aesthetic standards. What’s more, Keen argues the deluge of free, user-generated content is threatening the very viability of our traditional media and our cultural institutions. Our professional newspapers, magazines, music and movies are being overtaken by an avalanche of amateur, user-generated free content. Advertising revenue is being siphoned off by free classified ads on sites like Craig’s list; television networks are under attack from free, user-generated programming on YouTube? and the like; file-sharing and digital piracy have devastated the multibillion-dollar music business and threaten to undermine our movie industry. Worse, Keen claims, our “cut-and-paste” online culture—in which intellectual property is freely swapped, downloaded, remashed, and aggregated—threatens over 200 years of copyright protection and intellectual property rights, robbing artists, authors, journalists, musicians, editors, and producers of the fruits of their creative labors. BIOGRAPHY: The San Francisco Chronicle wrote “every good movement needs a contrarian. Web 2.0 has Andrew Keen.” Andrew is indeed the leading critic of today’s Internet and his CULT OF THE AMATEUR is the first book that critically exposes the consequences of the Web 2.0 revolution. Andrew was educated at London University, where he got a First Class degree in History. Today, he is host of afterTV.com and regularly appears on television and radio. His writing can be found on ZDNet.com and Britannica.com, and in traditional publications like the Weekly Standard, Fast Company and Forbes.

Not too hard, is it? Now imagine you have a cause worth fighting for. This is a little more difficult, no? Now imagine you have a place to go where there are other, intelligent, beautiful people talking about the same concerns and fighting for the same rights; and not just talking but dancing and grooving to powerful music that speaks to the soul and the fighting spirit of mankind. This may be impossible to imagine unless you have partaken in one of the most socially-aware parties this side of a Central Park Anti-War protest. The place: The JUMP N FUNK Party in New York. The reason: To celebrate the work of FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI, the pioneer of Afro-Funk and the solitary voice of the Nigerian people during the post-colonial rule of Nigeria in the early Seventies and Eighties. This month, the MUSICOLOGY series in Berkeley at the SHATTUCK DOWNLOW is proud to present a very special JUMP N FUNK EDITION. Hot off the heals of WMC in Miami, and fresh off a whirlwind tour with the Antibalas, from PHI to NYC to Berkeley we've got one of our all time favorites, soul brother #1, RICH MEDINA, rockin' an exclusive JUMP N FUNK set at MUSICOLOGY! Featuring: DJ Rich Medina (Philly) Proof (Massive Selector) pantyROBber (Massive Selector) Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist (True Skool) know the ledge... ABOUT RICH MEDINA Choice defines the man. Rich Medina has made a life based on one choice that has transformed the listening experience of millions. DJ Rich Medina lives, breathes, and revels in sharing the type of music that make a listener remember his soul. It is this awareness of soul that brings listeners back time and again to hear Rich spin: heads nod, bodies sway, emotions expand and coalesce. DJ Rich Medina uses the decks to guide his people away from the ordinary and into the realm of their imaginations. His intelligent blends bridge unexpected song selections that build a collective consciousness of intoxication. Without even realizing it, DJ Rich Medina lures you in and makes you forget who you were before the music began – Medina spins you into the now, into the moment, into the vital essence of who you are. Medina credits his family’s Baptist faith as the groundwork and source of his musical inclination and intuition. Music was always a form of celebration and rejoicing. The first time Medina heard Diana Ross’s 1976 hit “Love Hangover” in the family living room, he knew he wanted to be a DJ. When he’s writing music, whether in collaboration with other musicians or a personal project, Medina always aims to inject a universal notion of the need for change. Rich Medina holds DJ residencies at prominent venues throughout the country. Most notably he is a defining DJ at his “Little Ricky’s Rib Shack” parties at APT in New York City. Every Wednesday night Rich draws a crowd that waits patiently in line to experience the Medina funk flow, and for the last decade Medina has been a fixture on the Philly nightlife scene. Saturday nights on a bi-weekly basis, DJ Rich Medina is host of Jump N Funk at the prestigious Martinez Gallery. It is through such residencies that DJ Rich Medina is able to cultivate his audience and hone his craft. Always evolving as an artist, DJ Rich Medina transitions into the role of pre-eminent spoken word artist at clubs the world over. Rich writes words that convey messages of change and agency, self-determination and hope, and he is also the embodiment of those very same qualities and emotions. DJ Rich Medina, renaissance man, articulate performer and a down and dirty DJ who can go head to head with the best, is an artist who will transform the average experience of any club or venue and give his audience a night of music and words to remember. myspace.com/jumpnfunk myspace.com/richmedina kindred-spirits.nl richmedina.com

Free and open to the public - and followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above. Spatial Ranking Methods for Geographic Information Retrieval Ray Larson (UCB ABSTRACT: Unlike the large body of work in GIS and spatial analysis, there has been little study of the use and effectiveness of different spatial approximations for Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR). Clearly, no one approach will apply to all types of geographic information resources and collections. The need to retrieve and evaluate information objects based on their geospatial characteristics increases as the geographical "aboutness'' of the objects increase, e.g., a guidebook vs. a digital geographic data set of invasive plant species. Moreover, geospatial ranking methods are becoming increasingly important as the supply of and demand for geographic information grows. The quality of geospatial approximations in GIR, i.e. how closely they represent the original objects, constrains how accurately and effectively these objects can be retrieved and ranked. We have been exploring these issues and have developed some new algorithms for ranked retrieval of georeferenced objects. We have also been examining the indexing methods that can be employed for materials with geographic content or associations, including text materials. We have done comparative analysis of several GIR algorithms and evaluating their relative performance using a test collection of geospatial metadata, derived from the California Environmental Information Catalog (CEIC -- http://ceres.ca.gov/catalog). This discussion is based on that work, and on the results of two years of the GeoCLEF evaluation forum, part of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum organized as part of EU funded efforts for development of digital libraries. This talk will examine this research and the results obtained from evaluation of ranking methods and different spatial approximations of objects, in the context of both pure geographic retrieval rankings, and combinations of text and location information in the search process. BIOGRAPHY: Prof. Larson specializes in the design and performance evaluation of information systems, and the evaluation of user interaction with those systems. His background includes work as a programmer/analyst with the University of California Division of Library Automation (DLA) where he was involved in the design, development, and performance evaluation of the UC public access online union catalog (MELVYL). His research has concentrated on the design and evaluation of information retrieval systems, with an emphasis on digital libraries. Prof. Larson was the principal investigator for the "CHESHIRE Demonstration and Evaluation Project" sponsored by the US Dept. of Education, that developed a next-generation online catalog and full-text retrieval system. He was a co-principal investigator for the "Searching Unfamiliar Metadata Vocabularies" project sponsored by DARPA. Prof. Larson was also the principal investigator of the "Cross-Domain Resource Discovery: Integrated Discovery and Use of Textual, Numeric and Spatial Data" project sponsored by NSF as part of the International Digital Libraries program.

Including early works by Cristi Puiu (The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu), Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of Bucharest), and Cătălin Mitulescu (How I Spent the End of the World), this program of short films reveals generations in transition. In Liviu’s Dream, by Porumboiu, a young man contemplates his personal connection to Ceausescu’s antiabortion decree while earning a few lei by hustling stolen wedding dresses. In Puiu’s Cigarettes and Coffee, a successful young man impatiently hears the plaint of his unemployed father; the economy has been reconstructed, but some things never change. Mitulescu’s Traffic depicts a new generation of fatherhood, and how the trappings of modern affluence—cars, cell phones, business meetings—impact human connections. Radu Jude’s The Tube with a Hat traces an absurdist journey through dismal countryside, the lengths to which a father and son must go for television. In Constantin Popescu’s A Lineman’s Cabin, an accident interrupts the monotonous routine of two railway watchmen living in an isolated cabin near the Black Sea. • Liviu’s Dream (Visul lui Liviu, Corneliu Porumboiu, 2004, 39 mins). Development of Seoul's Pedestrian Master Plan Presentation by Shinhae Lee. The population of Seoul, Korea has reached 10 million. The city's economic growth has led to increased car ownership. Result: serious traffic congestion, more traffic accidents, widespread air pollution. Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) built additional roads to accommodate cars, but that didn't improve the situation. So SMG changed direction, away from cars and toward public transit and pedestrians. BUY TICKETS AT TICKETWEB Shattuck DOWNLOW Fishbone lives up to their legend as "THE" group to bridge the gap between the funk of George Clinton and the blare of Rush; a hybrid fusion where Led Zeppelin and Sly Stone dance to a frenetic ska beat that fuel's the alternative thrust of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction and the cast of Lollapalooza. From their childhood together in the hardcore South Central Los Angeles wasteland to years of forced school-bused integration, Fishbone's influences were kaleidoscopic and never-ending. The band was formed in 1979 in the ghettos of South Central Los Angeles. The group came from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. Fishbone first gained attention with their unique live concerts, earning a reputation as one of the most original bands in the alternative genre. Their unique stew of different styles, mixed with hectic energy and pounding rhythms, were a huge influence on the funk/rock/metal/rap genre that would become popular in the 1990s. Live audiences around the world have been surrendering to the band's stage flash and magical rhythms with uninterrupted regularity. Such passionate devotion is not lost on Fishbone, who refer to their friends on the road as "The Familyhood."

Join us in a journey of self-discovery as we pioneer new territory, piloting a project to lead in aging... in community, and beyond. This is a new program developed by Barry Barkan of the Live Oak Institute. Are You Ready to Make the Transition From Baby Boomer to Elder Boomer? Have you and your contemporaries been thinking about your role as an elder and the way we will age together, support one another and help rescue the future? The Elders Guild Vision and Mission Our Vision ....is a world in which powerful and conscious elders join together in common purpose to bring healing, joy and connection to our lives, our families, our communities and our world. Our Mission ....is to create the communities where we re-imagine our old age, look after one another and embody the wisdom that will enable us to help heal the future. The Elders Guild seeks to unleash the virtually unprecedented resource of a planetary network of conscious and responsible elders by focusing on organizing ourselves in three crucial areas of our individual and collective development: Community, Wisdom, and Championing the Future. UPDATE: first-timer's intro at 6:30 PM, main event at 7.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Festival hits the road with a roster of musical heavyweights representing the very best in modern jazz. Terence Blanchard ("His writing is superb and heartfelt, his playing perfect," says the Wall Street Journal) rose to prominence through his association with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and is one of today's top trumpet players. Saxophonist James Moody has dominated the scene for over 60 years and continues to delight audiences with his vitality and innovative playing. Nnenna Freelon is in "the very top echelon" (Los Angeles Times) of jazz vocalists, and pianist Benny Green "plays funky and hard, and breathes not only be-bop but Oscar Peterson's virtuosic effusions as well" (The New York Times).

The Grammy-nominated New Century Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the next program in its 2007-08 season. The program, with performances in San Rafael, Berkeley, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, features a 17-member conductorless string orchestra with founding Music Director and guest concertmaster Stuart Canin. Stuart Canin, founding Music Director and concertmaster of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, returns to lead the orchestra in a thrilling evening of NCCO specialties. Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony for Strings was featured on the Grammy nominated NCCO recording, Written with the Heart’s Blood. This dark and terrifying piece is followed by Mendelssohn’s delightful Octet for Strings, which he composed at the young age of 16. Mr. Canin, currently the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera, has been charming audiences for over half a century. At the end of World War II, he was selected to perform for President Truman, Josef Stalin, Winston Churchill, and other world leaders at Potsdam. He has been recorded on numerous films, including Forrest Gump, Schindler’s List, and Titanic. Mr. Canin is the former concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera, first prize winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition, and winner of the Handel Medal, New York City’s highest cultural award. For more information, call the NCCO at 415.357.1111 or visit the website at www.ncco.org The New Century Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1992, looks for fresh, exciting new ways to present classical music in the San Francisco Bay Area by combining performances of extraordinary quality with innovative programming. The music director or guest concertmaster chooses the programs and guides the artistic vision, but the seventeen members of the orchestra perform without a conductor. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power. As part of its dedication to the future of music and to the community, the NCCO provides violin lessons to underserved students in Marin City and San Rafael’s Canal District, as well as intimate classroom performances by string quartets to students in Bay Area elementary schools. The orchestra has released four compact discs, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. About Stuart Canin Stuart Canin, concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony from 1970 to 1980, and concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera from 1970 to 1972, was born in New York City where he studied the violin with famed pedagogue Ivan Galamian. In 1959, he surpassed 25 other violinists to capture first prize at the Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. One year later he was honored by his native city with its highest cultural award, the Handel Medal, in recognition of his musical achievements. Mr. Canin has served as concertmaster of the Casals Festival Orchestra in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Mostly Mozart Summer Festival Orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York City, and from 1995 to 1998 he was guest concertmaster of the Tokyo-based New Japan Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa. He has also appeared as soloist with such conductors as Leonard Slatkin, Josef Krips, Neville Marriner, David Zinman, Zdeněk Macal, Kent Nagano, and Seiji Ozawa. Mr. Canin has recorded an album of the music of Swiss composer Frank Martin for New Albion Records. The album contains the Violin Concerto, the Maria Triptychon for violin, soprano, and orchestra, and the Etudes for String Orchestra. The Berkeley Symphony is the featured orchestra for the violin concerto and the Maria Tryptychon, and the New Century Chamber Orchestra performs the Etudes. For seven years, Mr. Canin, one of the founders of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, led the conductorless orchestra as Music Director and Concertmaster. During his tenure, the orchestra made recordings of music by Shostakovich, Ginastera, and Alberto Williams. The Shostakovich was nominated for a Grammy award in 1997. In 2001, Mr. Canin was appointed concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, a position he still holds. HOMEPAGE http://www.ncco.org

In 1952, Grace Hopper's compiler opened the door to thousands of new software developers. But until a few years ago, only experts could create interactive media. Today, millions of high-school students maintain custom Facebook pages. Our group's research goal is to create the tools that will enable design generalists and lead users, not just technology experts and engineers, to design interactive systems for the next era of pervasive computing. What kinds of systems can enable people to be able to design a personal health monitor or full-body game controller? There are three main thrusts to our research. The first is design tools for pervasive computing - enabling people to create interfaces that support the richness of human bodily expression and more tightly integrate the physical and computational worlds. Second, our work introduces programming by physical demonstration, enabling designers to leverage their tacit knowledge about the physical world to specify sensor-based interactions through combined direct manipulation and pattern recognition. Third, despite its drawbacks, many users today develop software by copying and modifying existing examples. Yet current software tools are largely ignorant of design-by-modification. Our recent work introduces techniques for creating interfaces analogically by sampling elements from existing designs. In this talk, we will present an overview of the tools and applications we developed in these three areas and reflect on our design process itself - how we go about observing, prototyping, and building interaction design tools.

At the keyboard, Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India and blends them with the rangy, percussive avant-garde stylings she cultivated in studies with Don Pullen and Henry Threadgill. This personal musical vocabulary is further enriched by a lush lyricism and organized by an architectural sense of composition that she derived from classical training. Described by Down Beat magazine as a "sonic innovator [whose reputation] has been built on electronics, trips to the fringes of electric jazz, rock 'n' roll, danceable beats and snappy writing," composer and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has led a number of experimental/improv jazz groups including the President, Pigpen, Zony Mash, and Ponga, and has also released work as a solo artist. This jazz group features Ben Perowsky, Tim Luntzel and Jim Campilongo.

Powell St. John is the legendary singer/songwriter from 13th Floor Elevators. Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit and a certainty of intent that immediately sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers. These Aliens have history -- between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones where members of the Beta Band. Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker.

In this work of hip hop theater, Dan Wolf, the great grand nephew of Ludwig Wolf (writer of Hamburg, Germanys most famous song, Een echt Hamborger Jung), returns to Hamburg to make a film about his family. Using tatter found in his grandmothers basementa picture of two dockworkers, a costume, a long letter from his grandfatherWolf links his Jewish past with his present search for self. Through a pastiche of rhyme, dialogue, and song we are led from Hamburg to Shanghai, New York and San Francisco through anti-Semitism, the assimilation of Jewish culture, and the rediscovery of an artistic legacy. The JCCs performance mixes select scenes from the play with excerpt from the film, providing a unique cross-medium journey that is not to be missed. A Q&A will follow the show. When people ask me why I do what I do I reply Its in my blood. I am Leopold and Ludwig and James and Donut. German and Jewish. Strong and liberated. Feared and oppressed. A seeker of beauty, of truth, and of tradition, both theatrical and Jewish. Dan WolfEvent submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of JCCEB.
