Having made more films than Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton combined, silent film comedian Harold Lloyd began his career with his iconic short films before he helped pave the way for the advent of the “feature-length” film. Movie Crazy is one of Harold Lloyd’s early forays into “talkies.” Movie Crazy (1932) Director, Clyde Bruckman Harold Hall, an accident prone young man with little or no acting ability, desperately wants to be in pictures. After a mix-up with his application photograph, he gets an offer to have a screen-test, and goes off to Hollywood. At the studio, he does everything wrong and causes all sorts of trouble. JULY 4 - 10, Friday- Thursday at 7, 9pm THE GITS Sponsored by Easy Street Records (Kerri O'Kane, 2007, Digi-BETA, 80 min) In a pre-Nirvana Seattle, The Gits were the resident musical underdogs. With the unparalleled vocal power of front woman Mia Zapata they set the bar for indie rock in the Pacific Northwest. After inspiring such incendiary bands as Seven Year Bitch to pick up their instruments, they caught the ear of major record label execs who heard the muscular riffs and soulful hooks and realized what fans already knew – The Gits were anything but your typical street punk outfit. Because of this, the tragedy that struck in 1993 was that much harder to swallow. With intimate live footage and interviews with the surviving members, director Kerri O’Kane explores the mystique and digs into the mystery of one of the rock world’s most enigmatic bands. One part The Filth and The Fury, one part CSI: Seattle, THE GITS is a rock doc as engaging and powerful as the music that inspired it. www.thegits.com

In the rural town of Greene, Iowa, the two friends plant a single acre of the nation's most powerful crop--corn--and then set out to follow it from a seed to the dinner plate. What ensues is part horror film and part documentary. John Hartl of the Seattle Times calls KING CORN, "simultaneously nostalgic and sinister." Have you been wondering why Americans are so overweight? Or why certain foods are so cheap? Have you heard our average life expectancy is headed down, not up? Since 1970, much of the country's corn has been turned into ethanol, cattle feed or high-fructose syrup for juices and sodas — a leading cause of obesity and diabetes. Despite the dire consequences of our corny diet, Curtis & Ian make learning fun with animation and a unique view from the stalk up. Join us after the film for a discussion featuring Erin MacDougall, a board member with Seattle's P-Patch Trust. Erin also works for Public Health Seattle & King County and manages the county's efforts around Healthy Eating and Active Living. She is a strong advocate for the role of local, sustainable agriculture in the prevention of chronic disease and as an essential way to promote lifelong health for people and the planet. Erin will be joined by other local nutrition advocates and farmers. They'll answer audience questions as well.
