The band entered the music industry in early '99s touring with Fear Factory. The band caught many people's attention and some even say they outplayed Fear Factory. Their debut album, Wisconsin Death Trip, has gone gold. Easily recognized by singer Wayne Static's treasure troll hair, the band is certainly one to watch in the next few years. Static-X, a band with a rockin' sound and a solid fan-base. Keep Disco Evil! Otep got its start in 2000, when singer/band namesake Otep combined her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of vocals with three other musicians in Los Angeles. Rumors of involvement in the mystical arts helped create a mysterious image, and they found success in 2002 after joining the Ozzfest Tour.

Leo Kottke

Where: KiMo Theatre

Date: 2008-05-07 19:30:00

Type:

For the past three decades, Leo Kottke has been indefatigable in his pursuit of a unique musical vision that has placed him among the foremost acoustic guitar stylists of our time. Kottke's ability to embrace folk idioms and pop melodies as readily as he assimilates jazz and classical influences makes him unique among guitar virtuosi. For all its technical brilliance, wicked syncopation and harmonic sophistication, Kottke's music is eminently accessible. At heart he's a populist; this has been abundantly clear ever since the guitarist's 1969 debut, 12 String Blues. His latest album, Try and Stop Me, is the most improvisational record the legendary guitarist has ever recorded.

516 WORDS presents Firestorm: Women's Poetry Open Mic & Slam

Where: 516 ARTS

Date: 2008-03-15 19:30:00

Type:

516 WORDS: Firestorm-- Women's Voices Rising Firestorm is a poetry reading series featuring women poets, which was originally started in the early 1990s by Juliette Torres. Current organizer Maresa Thompson says, "The world needs women's voices. They remind us of who we are and where we came from. They speak of what it is to be a warrior, a mother, a wise woman, and look to who we are becoming. This event inspires participation because the poets know they will be heard and understood in a welcoming environment." The evening will begin with an open mic followed by a women's-only competitive poetry slam judged by audience members. This qualifying slam will help determine which woman will represent ABQ at the Women of the World National Poetry Slam in 2009. This is also a qualifying slam for the Albuquerque team for the National Poetry Slam. OPEN MIC Hear the diverse and extraordinary voices of the women of Albuquerque's Poetry Community. Newcomers are encouraged and welcome to participate in this environment of sharing. SLAM Slam started in the 1980s and is now an internationally recognized art form. Poetry Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry and is judged randomly (and sometimes haphazardly) by audience members. Open Mic and Slam sign-up at 7:30pm. (participation is limited to 12 poets for Open Mic and 12 poets for Slam-- poets may do either open mic OR slam) Call 242-1445 for info. This event is FREE.
