Stephen Chow in KING OF BEGGARS Rated PG; 96min; Director:Gordon Chan and David Lam Kung Fu Mania: King of Beggars w/ Wonderful Chinese menu available! Stephen Chow is a pure force of entertainment. Possessed of an almost unnatural hybrid combo of comedy and action-packed leading man charm, he's become the greatest star and filmmaker in Hong Kong. His KUNG FU HUSTLE and SHAOLIN SOCCER are widely-seen examples of HK movie-making at its most rewarding, but his early on-screen talent is no less potent. For this rare screening of this slapstick kung fu masterblast, Alamo chef Thomas Hanawa has prepared a delicious accompanying menu: Winter melon soup: a refreshing soup made from winter melon, ginger and green onions Black mushroom bao: bite-sized steamed buns filled with braised black mushrooms and served with hoisin and cracked chili oil 5 spice seared duck: duck breast seasoned with 5 spice powder, served with candied oranges and oolong scented rice. (you can substitute tofu for duck) 8 precious pudding: rice pudding filled with candied fruits, lotus seeds, and red bean paste. All items are ala carte and limited edition. We will be serving our great regular menu also! ----------- Location: Alamo Downtown Kid Policy: 18 and up; Children 6 and up will be allowed only with a parent or guardian. No children under the age of 6 will be allowed. Screenings (click on a show time to buy tickets): * Monday, May 28, 2007 @ 7:00p

Epistrophy Arts celebrates 10 years of bringing international adventurous music to Austin with the Texas debut performance of Scandinavian powerhouse jazz quintet Atomic. Austin's Historic Victory Grill Wednesday January 23. 8PM 1104 E. 11th St. $12 advance tickets @ End of An Ear and Waterloo Records $15 door "One of the most exhilarating groups on the European circuit" (The Guardian, UK) Atomic, a key exponent of the 'new wave' of Nordic jazz, was formed in 1999 by five important young musicians from the burgeoning jazz scenes of Sweden and Norway. Combining the powerful, cutting-edge Oslo rhythm section of Håvard Wiik on piano, Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums with the Stockholm front line of trumpeter and saxophonist Magnus BrooFredrik Ljungkvist, the quintet is one of the hottest acoustic ensembles to have emerged at the turn of the century. Atomic plays original music that mixes grooves and modes with a distinctive approach to free playing. One of the key bands of the ‘new wave’ of Scandinavian jazz, the ensemble features members of Ken Vandermark’s Free Music Ensemble, The Thing with Mats Gutstafsson, Peter Brötzmann’s Tentet and Scorch Trio. Together, these emerging musicians from the Scandinavian jazz underground have performed and recorded with acclaimed artists as diverse as Chris Potter, Iain Ballamy, Sonic Youth, Joe McPhee, Marilyn Crispell, Bobo Stenson among many others. Think classic Miles Davis meets late-period Coltrane meets Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers with a decidedly contemporary feel and you'll get an idea... A Jazz Festival favourite, the band has released four outstanding CDs, Feet Music, Boom Boom, The Bikini Tapes, Happy New Ears (Norwegian Grammy for Best Album, 2006), on Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label. www.atomicjazz.com About Epistrophy Arts: Epistrophy Arts is a grass-roots cultural organization dedicated to presenting the finest adventurous and improvised music in Austin Texas. Since January of 1998 we have presented over 50 concerts with some of the major figures in contemporary adventurous music.
