Bellingham-based author George Dyson is a scientific historian and an engaging and entertaining speaker. He returns with a talk about Project Orion, the improbable story of the attempt by a small group of scientists (led by Theodore B. Taylor and Freeman Dyson, his father) to build an interplanetary spaceship propelled by nuclear bombs. This story chronicles a fascinating episode in U.S. scientific research against the political and cultural backdrop of the Cold War, when nuclear technology spelled both promise and terror.
