Friday June 22 The Quiet Earth Location: Fools Foundation - 1025 19th St. Off of K St, between 19th and 20th, next to the back-end of Old Spaghetti Factory. 7:00 PM. Admission: $5.00. This New Zealand indie from 1985 features the great Bruno Lawrence as Zac, a scientist who awakes one day to find that all people have vanished from the face of the Earth due to a global experiment going awry. Zac's mind slowly deteriorates due to the solitude until he stumbles upon another survivor, Joanne (Alison Routledge), and later a Maori (Peter Smith) named Api. The three band together and slowly realize that the forces unleashed by the experiment are destined to happen again. This film has a phenomenal ending which you'll likely be puzzling out in your head for weeks, if not years! We are doing regular weekly film screenings with Fools Foundation on Fridays at 7 PM - most are $5 (unless otherwise noted in advance), and will have filmmakers out from time to time. Author Gordy Slack will discuss his latest book, The Battle over the Meaning of Everything, a perspective on the "culture wars" through the eyes of a journalist who has been reporting for Salon and others on the evolution vs. ID (intelligent design) debate, which rarely rises above cultural and political caricature. Slack discovered in Dover, PA that the matter is much more nuanced and interesting than a Punch and Judy Show. Across America ”families are pitted against each other, towns are split in two, and the ideological battle being waged has consequences far beyond what’s taught in high school science classes or even its political fallout.” The real battle, Slack has found, is over the questions of what being a person is all about, what being an American is all about, and what life on earth is all about. In short, it is a battle over the meaning of, well, everything. Slack will be bringing copies of his just-released book to autograph and personalize for those who would like to purchase a copy directly ($20, cash only please). Hosted by Atheists and Other Freethinkers, the event is free and open to the public.

Dave’s dynamic humor explores everything from raising kids and marriage to current events and even ear hair, putting a hilarious twist on all we hold ordinary. He challenges the audience to approach topics from a different angle and discover the things going on in the background of life rather than right out front. He has contributed material for ABC’s “Politically Incorrect,” and “The Zany Report” on the “Bob & Tom Show.” Traveling the country making people laugh is Dave at his best, and having tread upon stages for over ten years Dave is now considered a “Comedian-American.” Tickets: $7 in advance, $9 at the door
