Grammy Award-winning African-American female a capella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock is a Grammy Award-winning African American female a cappella ensemble with deep musical roots in the sacred music of the black church - spirituals, hymns, gospel - as well as jazz and blues. The Sweet Honey experience is like no other. Six African American women join their powerful voices, along with hand percussion instruments, to create a blend of lyrics, movement and narrative that variously relate history, point the finger at injustice, encourage activism and sing the praises of love. The music speaks out against oppression and exploitation of every kind. The septet, whose words are simultaneously interpreted in uniquely expressive American Sign Language, demands a just and humane world for all. Questions? Carl Rosa Opera The Pirates of Penzance Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta in a new stage version based on the original production The irrepressible silliness of Gilbert and Sullivan sails once again in Popejoy Hall. Bringing The Mikado to us last season, England?s Carl Rosa Opera returns with an inspired production of The Pirates of Penzance, accompanied by full orchestra. The operetta follows the tale of Frederic, who should have been apprenticed to pilots but was apprenticed to pirates when his nursemaid misheard the instruction. Renouncing piracy, he vows vengeance on his mates, even though he likes them personally. Will the pirates live through the attack of their former apprentice? Will Frederic wed Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General, or will his past prevent the union? It all makes for a glorious evening of singing, colorful costumes and delightful madness. Questions? The magnificently indefinable Asylum Street Spankers stand as one of the America's most distinctive groups. Defiantly acoustic, fiercely independent, and absurdly good, the Spankers began in 1994 at a party in Llano, Texas and since then have kept the all-night sing-along, anything-goes spirit of their inception alive. They've pushed their ever-evolving group from simple country-blues revivalism toward smart, challenging music of boundless variety, sophisticated arrangements, stunning showmanship, and determined inventiveness. Come see why Chris Davis of The Memphis Flyer called the Spankers "one of the best live acts you are likely to see anywhere, and any true fan of music would be a fool to miss them."

Since 1996 and the release of their debut album 'Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos', Apocalyptica - graduates of the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Finland - have been developing a style that is tough to put a name to... 'Heavy Cello Mayhem'? 'Rock'n' Resin'?!... The possibilities are vast, but whatever the latest tag, the fact remains that never before had a group of classically-trained cellists, metal fans to a man, attempted to fuse together the seemingly disparate worlds of classical music & hard rock...of Prokofiev & Pantera... Shostakovich & Slayer... to seek out the middle ground between the mosh pit & the orchestra pit, the dinner jacket & the denim jacket, whilst being 100 per cent respectful to both camps.
