Arts United of Washington has been integrating live music, dance and theater for the past four years in the Washington Metro Area. The Scenic Route is the third original production for the company whom The Washington Post stated has "something new to offer.” Inspired by the freedom to find one's own direction as characterized in Jack Kerouac's On the Road; live rock, jazz and folk music by songwriters from across the country drive the show. Dancer Magazine claimed "The dancer's charm, gusto, skill and humor enveloped the journey." Providing snapshots of American life through a fresh blend of new songs, dance and photography, Arts United of Washington steers the journey from big city to small town. Musicians, who play “equally well across a range of styles from freewheeling jazz to hard rock to country” (The Washington Post), are joined by vocalist Lori Williams whose smoky voice has been compared to the late Ella Fitzgerald. An artist co-presentation. TICKETS: $22 general admission; $17 members, students, teachers (PreK-12), professional artists & seniors; $8 for children 17 & under – unless noted otherwise.

Ariel Dorfman: "Why for Years I did not seem to care if I was a Jew and Whether I was Wrong" Ariel Dorfman was almost killed in the coup that toppled the Chilean government in 1973. Forced into exile, he spent the next 20 years protesting against the government of General Pinochet, while at the same time making a reputation for himself as a literary writer. He has published novels, essays, and plays, including Death and the Maiden, which was turned into a film by Roman Polanski. Jewish characters and themes, however, are rarely central to his stories and plays. Dorfman talks about his work and why, despite appearances, he may be a Jewish writer after all. Theatre J will present Dorfman's Picasso's Closet from June 21 to July 23, 2006 (visit www.dcjcc.org for more information). TICKETS: 888-621-2230 or www.nextbook.org

The N Word traces the symbiotic growth of the word and racism in America over the past 400 years. Asim pinpoints Thomas Jefferson as the word’s source: in a seminal but now obscure essay, Jefferson marshaled a welter of pseudo-science to define this enduring stereotype. Asim then reveals how nineteenth-century “science” colluded with popular culture to amplify this slander. Asim argues that even when uttered with the opposite intent by hipsters and hip-hop icons, using the slur helps keep blacks at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. He concludes that only when we know the word’s twisted history and legacy can we loosen its grip on our national psyche. Asim is deputy editor of the Washington Post Book World. He also writes a weekly syndicated column on popular culture. He lives in Maryland with his wife and five children. Sponsored by the Prince George's County Memorial Library System. This event is free and open to the public.
