Two women run a school for girls. A malicious youngster spreads an entirely unfounded scandal which precipitates tragedy for the women. Later it is discovered that the gossip was pure invention, but the irreparable damage has been done. Lillian Hellman’s classic comes to life on the Bowen stage to examine the issue of false accusations and their impact on our lives. This production brings the work of a great female playwright to the stage while commenting on contemporary issues about human sexuality. By now you’ve surely heard how the singular Todd Haynes has created an unconventional bio-pic of Bob Dylan by having six different actors (including Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and, most notably, Cate Blanchett (pictured), who won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film) portray Dylan at different stages of his career. While this high-concept description is essentially true, it doesn’t convey what Haynes is really up to—and it’s hard to imagine a meatier American film to sink into at this moment. See it in it’s first screening in this area, introduced by acclaimed indie producer Christine Vachon. Vachon has also produced such films as Haynes’s Safe, Poison, and Far from Heaven, as well as Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry and Mary Harron’s The Notorious Bettie Page, which Vachon introduced at the Wexner Center in January 2006 as part of a retrospective series on her work and that of Killer Films, the famed independent production company she cofounded.
