Camper Van Beethoven "We didn't want to jump right back in and make that ‘Bad Reunion Record’ that most bands make when they try to reform. We were more concerned with getting used to each other and figuring out that we could still make music together, before we made a big deal out of announcing that we were back." So says David Lowery of the extended gestation period that preceded New Roman Times, Camper Van Beethoven's first album of new material since reuniting after a decade-long hiatus. In the second half of the 1980s, Camper Van Beethoven-David Lowery (vocals, guitar), Victor Krummenacher (bass, vocals), Greg Lisher (guitar), Jonathan Segel (violin, guitar, keyboards) and Chris Pedersen (drums), plus late addition David Immerglück (guitar and various stringed instruments)—was one of its era's most original and influential indie rock bands. The quintet effortlessly combined an iconoclastic, irony-laced lyrical stance with a free-spirited eclecticism that encompassed a dizzying array of stylistic influences, from punk to folk to psychedelia to all manner of world music. Camper's visionary embrace of disparate genres established them as innovators, while their songs' combination of barbed satire and poignant humanism stymied those who'd attempt to pigeonhole them as a mere novelty.

A boat made of flotsam floated out to sea? A stretch limo art bar! A Rant Recorder, an experimental Green Wedding, an inflatable outdoor museum, art and films on the streets! It must be the Intervene! Interrupt! Rethinking Art as Social Practice festival hosted by UC Santa Cruz. Breaking the boundaries of conventional arts practice, the interventions festival takes art performance, websites, objects and events out of the gallery and into other social and public spaces to explore politics and everyday life. For the month of May 2008, artists will create work up and down the coast from San Francisco to San Jose to Santa Cruz, convening at UC Santa Cruz for the first West Coast interventions conference. The Yes Men, Nato Thompson, Suzanne Lacy, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Helen and Newton Mayer Harrison, Linda Montano, Marilyn Arsem, Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry, Amy Franceschini, Neighborhood Public Radio and many more artists, critics, and theorists explore what it means to make and consider art as performance and social practice. The month long series of exhibitions and a three-day conference focuses on three topics: interrupting hierarchies, art and life, and subversive complicity. Art events will take place throughout the month of May on UCSC’s campus, in and out of gallery spaces, on street corners, beaches, and projected onto the side of buildings. Events will be held at UC Santa Cruz Sesnon Gallery (featuring work by Martha Rosler and others), the LAB San Francisco, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Santa Cruz Film Festival. Outdoor performances will be hosted in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In, the KFC collective, the Santa Cruz Film Festival and more.

THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT UC SANTA CRUZ PRESENTS Sarah Richardson Stanford University "Contextual Values and Sex Differences in the Genome" The completion of the Human Genome Project and the renewal of interest in human genetic variation in its wake have produced new interest in, and theories of, genetic differences between males and females. Researchers claim, for instance, that "there is not one human genome, but two - male and female" (Duke University, 2005) and that human males and females differ by "two percent," "greater than the hereditary gap between humankind and its closest relative - the chimpanzee" (Hotz, 2005). I examine these genomic claims about sex difference on several levels. I argue that the claim that human male and female genomes differ by "two percent" is inflated under any set of assumptions. Further, I argue that the use of population genetic and comparative genomic models to compare human males and females is inappropriate and misleading. Finally, I argue that the comparison of sex differenceswith species differences is diagnostic of conceptual confusion about sex difference in biology. 4:00 pm Thursday, November 15, 2007 Cowell Conference Room Cowell College For abstracts and other information, visit us online at http://philosophy.ucsc.edu/colloquia.html

MC Chris is a rarity in hip-hop, he's an MC with legitimate skills who prefers to goof around on just about everything.

We wanted to let you know about an important and exciting new community economic development initiative here in Santa Cruz: the Santa Cruz Design Innovation Center. We’d also like to invite you to the Launch Event for this project, hosted by Plantronics at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 18, 2008. Please see the attached invitation, please see below for some background information, and definitely check out www.santacruzdesigncenter.com. Feel free to spread the word to others in your networks who may be interested in this project and this event. Okay, some background: About 18 months ago, a group of businesses leaders in Santa Cruz got together and recognized two things: 1) that design is a key differentiator and creates a competitive advantage in the global economy, and 2) that Santa Cruz is home to a rich mix of design talent across a variety of cutting edge design disciplines. That talent is resident in larger design-related companies—such as O’Neill, Plantronics, NHS, and Santa Cruz Bicycles—but also in a host of smaller independent architects, engineers, graphic designers, product designers, web designers, landscape designers, and others. These business leaders understood that if we could find a way to organize, catalyze, and showcase that talent to the world, then we could grow existing design-based business and attract new design-based businesses to Santa Cruz. Moreover, if we could create a place where that talent could collaborate across design disciplines, there would be no end to the marketable innovations that could be developed right here in Santa Cruz. Thus was the idea for the Santa Cruz Design Innovation Center born. The objectives of the SCDIC are three: 1) promote Santa Cruz as a design destination for world-class talent, 2) create networking and collaboration opportunities for the design community, and 3) educate students, companies, investors, and the public on the important of design and why design matters. The SCDIC has an active board, is an incorporated non-profit business, and is applying for tax-exempt status. The Launch Event on January 18th is designed to put the SCDIC on the map. We’ve invited designers, of course, but also a range of business and community leaders who will be instrumental in making the vision of the SCDIC a reality. RSVP @ rsvp@santacruzdesigncenter.com

In 1993 Black 47 changed Irish-American music irrevocably when they burst out of MTV screens with their hit single, Funky Ceili. Not only were people dancing in the aisles at their concerts, they introduced a new generation to the literature, politics and soul of Irish culture. Taking their name from the darkest year of the Irish Potato Famine, their music, though sometimes based on traditional melodies, is laced with rock, reggae, hip-hop, New Orleans and modern Jazz; while songwriter Larry Kirwan uses his playwriting experience and influences as varied as Yeats, Joyce and Dylan to fashion his dramatic cutting Edge lyrics. All ages welcome. Tickets are $20 and available at: www.inticketing.com www.brownpapertickets.com and Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz.

Alt-country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier exploded onto the scene in 1999 following her self-released sophomore effort, 'Drag Queens in Limousines.' The album, which garnered her a Crossroads Silver Star and a four-star rating in Rolling Stone, had critics comparing her self-described "country noir" to the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Prine, and, not surprisingly, Lucinda Williams. The success of 'Drag Queens...' led to main-stage shows at festivals around the country and multiple tours in Europe. Embraced by critics, folkies, and "No Depression" fans alike, Gauthier's warmly candid treatment of her fringe-dwelling subjects rings true, as it never verges on sentimental; her characters' downtrodden lives are never coldly exploited. Mark Olson was a founding member of the Jayhawks, the most acclaimed band to emerge out of the alt-country scene.

Ferron is a Canadian folk-song poet laureate. By listening to her music, audiences are allowed to acknowledge the passage of time, people, memories and hopes, through her poetic metaphors. The singer/songwriter from Davis, California, (known to many as one of the dynamic singers in the NorCal eclectic septet Mumbo Gumbo) blends the two styles in a way that has distanced her from the country mainstream but endeared her to fans of soulful singing. Webster's is an authoritative voice that manages to make existential angst, romantic confusion and spiritual longing sound uncommonly appealing. Each note she sings conveys a probing, acute sensitivity to the little complications of life and love, with a sexy edge to boot -- Webster is a real find, a great singer who has found her voice but not her niche. Jennifer Berezan's intense and personal approach to her music has brought her strong rapport with audiences from small clubs to large festivals throughout North America and Europe.

Bring your dancing shoes and come get your groove on with JESUS DIAZ and his monster all-star band QBA! Cuban born percussionist Jesús Diaz has quietly and assuredly taken the Bay Area music by storm, and established a place in the world of Latin and Cuban style dance music. The rich musical diversity of the Bay Area, combined with the roots of Afro-Cuban music, has provided the opportunity to learn, experiment and arrive at the evolution of what QBA is today. Jesús has assembled an incomparable orchestra of accomplished artists whose talents combine Funk, Jazz, Rumba, Son, and varied Afro-Cuban elements within the syncopation of modern expressions in Cuban dance music. This musical tradition is rooted in the firm belief in the importance of creating new and unique "signature" styles and sounds. The drive of the music is a direct function of remaining actively engaged with the dancers. Original "Timba" is indeed alive and well here in the United States. QBA fuses modern and traditional elements of Afro-Cuban influences within dance music to create their own unique sound. This is a MurrayLowGig
