From the Touch & Go Records web site: Brian McMahan, Britt Walford and David Pajo are back in the saddle again. Thanks to the kind folks at All Tomorrow's Parties, Slint will be playing select dates in the U.S. and Europe performing in its entirety what continues to be, 16 years after release, a legendary meditation on musical innovation -- 1991's Spiderland. In conjunction with ATP’s "Don't Look Back" series, Slint will reassemble for eleven dates, make like Sonic Youth (the first to announce their participation in the series) and plug in for a tour down memory lane. Nostalgia aside, though, Slint are playing music for keeps. We may have discreetly mentioned that last week around this time here. Tickets $30 adv / $35 dos. buy here

Bring awareness to the internal obstacles that impede open-heartedness, and live life with more joy and compassion. This seven-day silent meditation retreat is open to both beginners and advanced practitioners and will concentrate on the practices and underpinnings of contemplative Jewish teachings informed by the four-worlds model of Jewish mysticism. This retreat fosters a deep exploration of participants' own lives and consciousness, bringing participants to a greater experience of the Divine in their lives and in all things. Silence is held throughout the retreat, including at meals and in the guest rooms. Practices such as mindfulness to breath and body sensations help participants slow down, reconnect with themselves and become conscious of inner states and experiences. Days are structured to include a contemplative morning prayer service, yoga, individual interviews with facilitators and evening teaching sessions. The week will culminate with a contemplative Shabbat.

New York Singles Hike, Wine & Tasting Day Starts: Saturday, May 5, 2007 @ 8:45 AM Ends: Saturday, May 5, 2007 @ 6:45 PM Cost: $69.99 Location: NE corner of 73rd St. & Broadway Join Meet Market Adventures and other adventurous singles as we follow a series of trails in a hilly area known for its numerous lakes and impressive views. There are also opportunities for some bouldering, if you're up for it! There's magnificent scenery along the way and fine vistas from the tops of three mountains. Lunch at a stunning lake, where we will rest. This is a rigorous 5 mile hike! Over 4 hours, we will gain 1300 hundred feet in elevation. You will sweat, and the trail will be rocky. You should be in good physical shape, and close to your ideal weight. We'll keep a brisk pace, and there will be obstacles--streams to cross, logs in the trail, rocky/craggy paths...and it's well worth the effort. Then we will enjoy wine tasting at a real farm winery in New York's Hudson Valley. Wines are made from their own vineyards, orchards and from across the State. We will sample Chardonnays, Cabernet Franc, barrel fermented reds, and delicious fruit wines including Hard Apple Cider. Every wine is produced in a "limited edition" with almost every bottle spoken for as soon as its made. Several Canadian feature and short films have been programmed in 11th Annual Brooklyn International Film Festival (BiFF)including feature Carny directed by Toronto-based Alison Murray. The documentary is an intimate, gritty and poetic adventure following the lives of 'carnys' - traveling fairground workers whose experiences are outside the normalcy of most North Americans. Murray whose last documentary saw her cover 9000 miles on freight trains to document the lives of ‘hobos’, teams up with photographer Virginia Lee Hunter to follow the fair. A visually stunning and emotionally engaging film. BiFF was established in 1998 as the first international competitive film festival in New York. BiFF’s primary goal is to connect filmmakers to distribution companies and expose them to the media. Many films that have premiered at BiFF in past years went on to be released theatrically and/or are available at video stores near you.
