Wayne Hancock Live!

Where: Dante's

Date: 2007-07-14 13:00:00

Type:

Wayne makes music fit for any road house anywhere. With his unmistakable voice, The Trains reckless honky-tonk can move the dead. If you see him live, youll surely work up some sweat stains on that snazzy Rayon shirt youre wearing. If you buy his records, youll be rolling up your carpets, spreading sawdust on the hardwood, and dancing until the downstairs neighbors are banging their brooms on the ceiling. Wayne's disdain for the slick new swill that passes for real deal country is well known. Like he's fond of saying: "Man, I'm like a stab wound in the fabric of country music in Nashville. See that bloodstain slowly spreading? That's me." Look for the newest CD by Wayne Hancock, Tulsa, on Bloodshot Records. Next, Jill Sughrue, trained by Al Gore and the Climate Project, presents an Inconvenient Truth. David Van't Hof, sustainability policy advisor to the governor, will talk about the Governor's Global Warming Initiative, and how Oregon's K-12 schools can support it. The event will conclude with a 3-member panel speaking about areas in which schools can take action to reduce their impacts on global warming. Dave Cone, Gresham-Barlow School District, will describe his district's award-winning energy conservation measures and their impact; Kevin Downing, Oregon DEQ, will speak on school bus impacts and opportunities and Scott Bricker, Bicycle Transportation Alliance, will talk about state-wide efforts at schools to increase biking and walking, a win-win for student and environmental health. Time for Q+A will be provided. Immediately following the program there will be a tour of the Gerding Theater at the Armory. This is an opportunity to learn about the Portland Armory's sustainable design and construction and offers new perspectives and highlights the importance of minimizing our impacts on the environment. The Gerding Theater at the Armory has been awarded the LEED Platinum designation from the US Green Building Council, the highest sustainable design award available for a building in the United States. With this award it becomes the first building on the National Register of Historic Places to achieve Platinum status. It is also the first performing arts facility, and the first historic building on the west coast, to be so designated. This event will be informative for the entire community including school staff, business and government folks, parents and students.

Dinosaur Jr

Where: McMenamins Crystal Ballroom

Date: 2007-09-12 21:00:00

Type:

Dinosaur Jr. reunites for this brief series of shows, featuring original members J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph. All of the band's previous records have been reissued, in time for a new generation to enjoy. You can hear echoes of their sound every time a post-grunge band slugs out a chunky riff or when a jam band noodles its way to guitar nirvana. Dinosaur Jr was the perfect vehicle for singer/guitarist J. Mascis' unwieldy, gut-bucket guitar leanings, fusing them with singer-songwriter melodies and obfuscating lyrics that have become the hallmarks of grunge rock.

Fernando Viciconte is the man. Fernando is the band. Fernando has a voice that rivals Hank Williams for it's sheer creaking glory and songs that cut clean to the bone. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Fernando spent years in the L.A. music scene fronting the hard rock band Monkey Paw before moving to Portland, Oregon, in 1994 to chart a new path. Focusing on folk, roots rock and country-western oriented material as both the solo artist Fernando and the fully realized band, 'Fernando,' Viciconte has truly blossomed as an artist and found his own voice since making the trek North.
