Pacific Crest Wind Symphony featuring 3 Leg Torso @ Oregon Z...

Pacific Crest Wind Symphony featuring 3 Leg Torso Wednesday, July 4 (5 p.m. start) A symphonic celebration of independence pairing American composers with whimsical world music. Modeled after the acclaimed Eastman Wind Ensemble, Pacific Crest Wind Symphony brings together brass, woodwind and percussion in a unique arrangement. Each part is assigned to a different instrument -- flute, oboe, English horn, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass and percussion (including timpani, cymbals, snare, mallet instruments and more) -- creating lush textures for the music of everything from Bach, Handel and Mozart to 20th-century composers like Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. The group began at Marylhurst College in 1988, and has remained an all-volunteer ensemble. Outside of the group, its members are zookeepers, software engineers, teachers, physicists, artists, architects, retirees and much more. Conductor Edward Higgins is currently the director of bands at Portland State University. Blending traditional chamber music with tango, klezmer, Latin and world music, 3 Leg Torso can go from deftly danceable to sublimely orchestral at the drop of a mallet. The band formed in 1996 as a violin, cello and accordion trio, but has since expanded to a five-piece, adding percussion and bass. Their performances began on the streets of Portland, but quickly took them into the spotlight and onto stages around the country. As composers, founding members Bela Balogh and Courtney Von Drehle bring a unique voice and cinematic scope, so it's no surprise the two have provided the scores for multiple films. At this performance, after performing a solo set, they will be joined by the Pacific Crest Wind Symphony to perform a handful of their original songs backed by an impressive collection of brass, woodwind and percussion.
