Developing Successful Pricing Strategies

Where: Market4Demand, Inc.

Date: 2007-08-28 14:00:00

Type:

When it come to pricing new products and services, many technology companies favor "intuitive pricing" or treat pricing as an afterthought. They create pricing plans that confuse customers and salespeople, act as barriers to the sales process, are misaligned with competitors, or fail to convey the value of the offering. In short, most technology pricing at early and midrange enterprises completely fails to maximize revenue and market position. While some debate exists as to whether pricing is art or science, clearly market leaders and other successful companies are leveraging systematic approaches and techniques to set winning pricing strategies. Join us on August 28th for the informative, half-day marketing workshop intensive where pricing expert, Dan Lofgren, will leverage his 20 years experience with technology companies and extensive course work in game theory, economics and statistics at Yale University, to help you develop a successful pricing strategy. Workshop topics include: Avoiding the most common pricing mistakes Leveraging value-based pricing practices for sustained competitive advantage How to price against competitors and in select competitive situations Evolving pricing strategies over time Aligning pricing with marketing and product development Understanding your buyer's perception of your pricing How to test your pricing strategy with success and accuracy Determining if new pricing plans such as subscription-based pricing are right for your offering Migrating old pricing into new compelling ones $35 Market4Demand MESE E-List Subscribers, $45 Affiliates (PwC Alumni and members of SDForum and SVASE), $50 Standard.

Service Innovation by Design

Where: Stanford University Graduate School of Business

Date: 2007-10-15 00:00:00

Type:

Design has received growing attention as an important resource and catalyst for product innovation. However, the principles of design apply not only to physical products, but also to services. This conference, co-chaired by Peter Lawrence of the Corporate Design Foundation, will explore how emerging developments in the use of design and design thinking can lead to true innovation in services and customer experience. The focus of the conference will be on how user-centered design can help firms identify valuable service innovation. Case examples and relevant academic theory will be presented and discussed. Agenda Monday, October 15, 2007 5:00–6:30 p.m. Reception at IDEO’s Palo Alto Office Tuesday, October 16, 2007 6:30–7:30 a.m. Breakfast at the Hotel 7:30–7:45 a.m. Bus departs from hotel lobby to Stanford University 8:00–8:30 Registration 8:30–9:00 Welcome and Program Introduction Earl Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Science Institute Peter Lawrence, Chairman & Founder, Corporate Design Foundation 9:00–9:20 When Design Thinking Meets Marketing Diego Rodriguez, Director, IDEO, and Associate Consulting Professor, Hasso-Plattner Institute of Design Thinking, Stanford University Can organizations design their offerings to be viral? Can complex business issues be solved via a process of iteration and experimentation? At the Hasso-Plattner Institute of Design Thinking at Stanford, multidisciplinary teams of graduate students have been exploring these issues in a class called “CIA-KGB: Creating Infectious Action, Kindling Gregarious Behavior.” Working with organizations such as Mozilla, Fidelity, and Global Giving, they have used design thinking to launch and market business initiatives designed to spread from the get-go. Diego Rodriguez will present principles of Creating Infectious Action developed over two years of teaching CIA-KGB, and will also discuss how to create an environment where everyone—from engineers to computer scientists to philosophers to professional marketers—can use design thinking to get great marketing done. 9:20–9:30 Discussion 9:30–10:10 Re-imaging McDonald’s Restaurants: Innovations in Service and Environments Alison Guy, Retail Brand Director, McDonald’s USA Peter Dixon, Senior Partner, Lippincott Mercer Over the past four years McDonald’s has embarked on system-wide enhancements to their restaurants to better meet customer needs and marketplace trends. Innovations in how customers order, use drive-thrus, and experience the dining rooms have contributed to an incredible business turnaround and brand revitalization. This renewed focus on customer behavior has also prompted new product introductions and a concentration on new product categories. 10:10–10:20 Discussion 10:20–10:50 Break 10:50–11:30 Re-designing the Passenger Experience Klaus Brauer, Director, Passenger Satisfaction & Revenue, Boeing Commercial Airplanes John Barratt, President and CEO, Teague Commercial airplane interior design presents extraordinary challenges. Material choices are limited by stringent safety requirements; production methods are dictated by comparatively low production rates; and opportunity costs for the use of space are astronomical. Klaus Brauer and John Barratt will discuss the collaborative design process and research strategy implemented by Teague and Boeing in designing the 787 Dreamliner. Looking broadly and deeply at the customer experience, the 787 Dreamliner design team aimed to re-enliven the spirit of flight through interior and architectural design channels. The results significantly contributed to the most successful commercial aircraft launch in history. 11:30–11:40 Discussion 11:40–12:00 p.m. Design as a Core Strategic Business Competency Lee Green, Vice President, IBM Brand and Values Experience, Corporate Communications, IBM Corporation Innovation is not about new technology. It is about relevance. It is about developing customer insights in the context of market forces and competitive dynamics to identify opportunity. In many cases, the opportunity has not been previously defined, either by the market or the user. This session will focus on how IBM Design, in partnership with Business Consulting and Technology teams, is unlocking the secrets that lead to these opportunities. They are helping clients mine for the unarticulated wants and needs of their customers so they can convert that knowledge into marketplace success. 12:00–12:10 Discussion 12:10–2:00 Lunch 2:00–2:40 Making ING DIRECT Real Jim Kelly, Chief Operating Officer, ING Direct John Bricker, Vice President, Gensler Defining what a virtual bank would look like was no easy task for ING DIRECT and the global design firm, Gensler. How do you get wary consumers who expect vaults and teller cages to trust a virtual bank? The answer: design for the senses. Today’s businesses need to consider their emotional relationship with their customers as a key component of their value proposition. Designing a compelling customer experience enables this relationship. By utilizing a strategy that touches a multi-sensory physical experience, ING DIRECT engages the customer in a unique way, creating the opportunity for a trust engagement as well as, ultimately, customer acquisition. 2:40–2:50 Discussion 2:50–3:10 Does Touch Matter? Insights from Haptic Research Joann Peck, University of Wisconsin-Madison What is the role of haptics (touch) in consumer behavior? Professor Peck will discuss a recent study that details the relationship between touch and a feeling of ownership, including the motivational role of individual differences and contextual factors. The presentation will include implications for theory and practice. 3:10–3:20 Discussion 3:20–3:50 Break 3:50–4:30 Designing a Meaningful Consumer Experience Doug Palladini, Vice President of Marketing, Vans Joe Flannery, Vice President of Marketing, The North Face VF Corporation is the world’s largest apparel company, and Vans and The North Face are two of its hottest brands. Today Vans is a leading lifestyle brand for the youth market, sought after by skateboarders, surfers, fashionistas, and sneaker collectors as a modern-day icon of classic style. Since the late 1960s, a Darwinian approach to product design and marketing has helped The North Face become the world’s largest premium outdoor sports company whose technically advanced apparel, equipment, and footwear appeal to its core customers: accomplished climbers, mountaineers, snowsports athletes, endurance runners, and explorers. Doug Palladini and Joe Flannery will discuss the contrasting approaches their brands have taken to applying design as a business driver, expanding their respective franchises while maintaining core customers’ loyalty. 4:30–4:40 Discussion 4:40–5:20 Packing the House Kevin Giglinto, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Dan Kraemer, Co-founder, IA Collaborative The world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed tremendous success for more than 100 years. Yet as people increasingly have less time and more options for entertainment, the CSO faces the challenge of gaining new listeners while encouraging greater participation from current patrons. To address this challenge, IA Collaborative and the CSO immersed themselves with loyal and new patrons to understand perceptions and identify unmet needs. The team investigated the symphony’s current assets and partnerships, and explored new technology, channel, and brand opportunities. IA and CSO then created a new creative vision and strategic plan for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to become a premier cultural arts innovator. The integrated design program has delivered powerful business value with annual online sales increasing from $220,000 to $3.5 million. 5:20–5:30 Discussion 5:30–5:40 Concluding Remarks 6:00–7:30 Reception at the Hasso-Plattner Institute of Design Thinking (d-School), Stanford University Wednesday, October 17, 2007 7:00–7:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast 7:30–7:45 Bus departs from hotel lobby to Stanford University 8:00–8:40 Activation by Design Richard Neuner, CMO, Blue Cross Blue Shield Mark Jones, Service Innovation Lead, IDEO One of the most important questions in health care today is how to encourage consumers to care for their health and to utilize appropriate, quality health care services. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota began working with IDEO in 2005 to design a new approach to consumer activation. Following extensive consumer research, IDEO recommended a significant re-design of each of the major touchpoints that the health plan has with its members; namely, the call center service experience, the web experience, and the annual enrollment experience. This presentation will share the findings of that research and illustrate the differences before and after IDEO’s work. 8:40–8:50 Discussion 8:50–9:10 Speaker TBA 9:10–9:20 Discussion 9:20–9:50 Break 9:50–10:10 From Ethnography to Market: It Takes More than “Add Users and Stir” Herman D’Hooge, Innovation Strategist, Intel Corporation In defining and designing new products and services, methods based on user-orientation (e.g., ethnography, needs-finding, voice of the customer, total user experience, and others) are rapidly gaining widespread acceptance. Many consultancies offer services to companies that lack the in-house competencies to implement such methods. The real challenge is embedding user-orientation deeply within an organization’s DNA so it becomes systemic and yields tangible results. This is especially true in organizations with established processes that do not have a user-centric tradition. Mr. D’Hooge will share learnings and offer practical tips on how to get user-orientation off the ground, how to make it actionable, and how to keep the voice of the user alive throughout the development process. 10:10–10:20 Discussion 10:20–11:15 Panel Discussion Moderator: Jerry Wind, University of Pennsylvania Panelists TBA 11:15–11:30 Concluding Remarks 11:30 Box Lunch

Every year, the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab (VLAB) has the honor of hosting a special session called Concept-to-Company, moderated by Ann Winblad, the co-founding partner of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. This year's Concept-to-Company will focus on Widgetbox, an open web widget marketplace and syndication platform. With the recent proliferation of widgets, widget companies entering the marketplace, and the atomization of content and services, what opportunities do entrepreneurs and VCs see as ways to capitalize on this current trend? Is there a profitable business model for the current trend of decoupling content and services from their source -- pushing revenue generation to the distributor as opposed to the creator? Please join speaker Ed Anuff, moderator Ann Winblad and industry leading panelists as they explore how the widgetization of the web will impact the way we maximize the potential of online communication, efficiency, and revenue generation. As marketers continue to grok the importance and impact of online conversations on brands, they're increasingly looking at new tools, new platforms that will help augment and extend the way they tell their stories via the web. Corporate blogs, branded social networks and other new media platforms are proving their worth and return inside many companies, but knowing which tool(s) to use in your marketing program is only part of the equation -- knowing what it takes to successfully *create and build* a platform for conversation is the other, and it's a part where many markters get stuck. Josh Hallett, principal and founder of Hyku, Inc., will be talking with us about some of the technical and production considerations that marketers need to consider when undertaking new media projects. Space is limited, so please RSVP ASAP via our Meetup page. http://publicrelations.meetup.com/79/calendar/5921388/ - Third Thursday Organizers

RSVP ON THE EVENT HOMEPAGE. I heard a lot of whining recently about how we seem to be having a bunch of Lunch 2.0’s in “the city” and not enough in the cradle of Lunch 2.0 civilization: Silicon Valley. Bah! Do you have any idea how much work it is to take credit for all these events that other people do? Have you heard of the high-flying social network in Palo Alto called Facebook. Well, all the hard work has paid off. Sure it took placing some well placed bribes (like creating a Lunch 2.0 group on Facebook) and breaking out the wooden spoons (don’t ask), but we finally convinced them to host a Lunch 2.0, even though the company is bursting at the seams and space is tight—something about “growing so fast that the caterers are freaking out.” Sure, that means that this Lunch is going to be in the evening…as a happy hour. But it promises to be just as geeky as ever: Check out the apps built at their latest hackathon, learn more about how you can build technology on the kick-ass Facebook Platform, enjoy a snack (note to Facebook: I’m partial to Cheetos and Frito Lays… and watermelon :-D ). Developers + Happy Hour + Lunch 2.0 = Awesometown Space may be limited so please RSVP early.

At Nokia Research Center Palo Alto, they are embarking on an investigation into the use of a new generation of proactive displays - large computer displays that can sense and respond in contextually appropriate ways to the people nearby. Our new Context, Content and Community Collage proactive display application is running on 8 LCD touchcomputers recently deployed throughout our lab. Nearby people are sensed via Bluetooth phones, and the response is an incrementally generated ambient collage of photos from Flickr profiles they have chosen to share. The presentation will highlight the motivations, goals, design and early deployment experiences with the proactive display application. Date: 2008-02-28 06:00:00

World Changing used to be one of my favorite blogs. I would guess who wrote the post while reading it. The most insightful ones where always written by Jamais Cascio. He moved on to post on his own blog: Open the Future. His most famous post is the calculation of the carbon footprint of the production and consumption of one cheeseburger. He was also one of the first regulars coming to the Future Salon, when we were just a couple of people sitting in a circle at the Barnes and Noble in San Mateo. After a while the long drive from a bit beyond East Bay was to much for him. This is why I am super happy that Jamais will be talking about Green Tomorrows at our Future Salon on Thursday the 28th of February. Abstract of his talk: With global warming and ongoing climate disruption posing a leading threat to how the next century unfolds, it's useful to look at the implications of how we might choose to respond. Adopting a "scenario planning" approach, Jamais Cascio looks at four different possible ways we could tackle climate risks -- and the kinds of worlds that these choices might create. From geoengineering to distributed power, hyper-efficient buildings to reimagined cities, the various possible strategies we might employ offer a diversity of complex risks and transformative benefits. Jamais Cascio writes about the intersection of emerging technologies and cultural transformation, focusing on the importance of long-term, systemic thinking. He speaks around the world on issues including the global environment, technological transformation, and political change. In 2003, Cascio co-founded WorldChanging.com, the award-winning website identifying models, tools, and ideas for building a "bright green" future. In March, 2006, he started OpenTheFuture.com as his online home. Cascio presently serves as a research affiliate at the Institute for the Future, as the Director of Impacts Analysis for The Center for Responsible Nanotechnology, and as a founding fellow at the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies. A Future Salon has the following structure: 6-7 networking with light refreshments proudly sponsored by SAP. From 7-9+ pm presentation and discussion. SAP Labs North America, Building D, Room Southern Cross or Cafeteria depending on how many people sign up. Film - Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives

Where: First Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall (wheelchair accessible)

Date: 2008-05-13 20:00:00

Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War This film is prompted by a recognition of our deep dependence on the natural world and the significant threat to that world posed by war and preparations for war. The scale of environmental damage over the last half century is unprecedented. Falling water tables, shrinking forest cover, declining species diversity -- all bespeak ecosystems in distress. These trends are now widely acknowledged as emanating from forces of humanity's own making: massive population increases, unsustainable demands on natural resources, species loss, ruinous environmental practices. Ironically, however, war -- that most destructive of human behaviors -- is commonly overlooked. In all its stages, from the production of weapons through combat to cleanup and restoration, war entails actions that pollute land, air, and water, destroy biodiversity, and drain natural resources. Activities that do such damage cry out for far-reaching public scrutiny. The sustainability of our entire ecosphere is at stake. We can no longer maintain silence about the environmental impact of war on the grounds that such scrutiny is "inconvenient" or "callous" at a time when all human life is so endangered. $5 - $10 suggested donation. Dr. Halpern will take us on a behind-the-scenes journey into the world of cutting-edge memory research. Her new book unveils data about memory loss only now available to general public. Halpern spent years with neuroscientists, pharmacologists, psychologists, nutritionists, and inventors who are hunting for the genes and molecules, drugs and foods, machines, prosthetics, behaviors and therapies that will stave off Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia and keep our minds-and memories-intact. Like many of us who have had a relative or friend succumb to memory loss or Boomers who are getting older, we are hearing statistics about our own chances of falling victim to dementia, we all worry that each lapse of memory portends disease. Join us for this special event as Sue Halpern discusses some of her findings such as: What the experts really knew, what the bench scientists are working on. How close science is to a cure, to treatment, to accurate early diagnosis. Whether the crossword puzzles, Sudokus, and ballroom dancing can really keep us lucid. Dr Sue Halpern received her doctorate from Oxford University and began teaching at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Mining Quotations for Links and Ideas Presented by Okan Kolak and Bill Schilit, researchers, Google Inc. Cost: Free and open to all who wish to attend, but membership is only $10/year. Abstract: Scanning books, magazines, and newspapers has become an widespread activity because people believe that much of the worlds information still resides off-line. In general after these works are scanned they are indexed for search and processed to add links. In this talk we will describes a new approach to automatically add links by mining repeated passages. Our technique connects elements that are semantically rich, so strong relations are made. Moreover, link targets point within a work rather than to the entire work, facilitating navigation. Our system has been run on a digital library of over 1 million books, has been used by thousands of people, and has generated the worlds largest collection of quotations. We will also present a follow-on project based on the theory that authors copy passages from book to book because these quotations capture an idea particularly well: Jefferson on liberty; Stanton on womens rights; and Gibson on cyberpunk. Our Key Ideas prototype provides an interaction model where readers fluidly explore the library by viewing popular quotations on a particular key term, and follow links to quotations on related key terms.

Now with social networking sites and tools, entrepreneurs can build traffic into the millions, quickly and for only the cost of building a Facebook or OpenSocial application. Businesses can tap into networks of millions of users by building a small application that can in turn be used by millions--driving awareness, traffic and revenues for your business. Social networks like LinkedIn are now accessible with the use of OpenSocial, a community driven specification that allows cross-network usability through a published set of protocols. What does that mean for you? Extraordinary potential to access social networks that are trusted and can help build your business in an extremely efficient way. Understanding how to take advantage of these tools is not only smart--it is essential for remaining competitive. We'll discuss how you can take advantage of one of the most compelling trends in online marketing. The lively panel discussion will explore this topic to provide answers to the following questions and more: What is the best way to capitalize on the new possibilities for building your business using social networks like Twitter MySpace and hi5? How do you create an application to drive traffic? Which platform should I build for: OpenSocial or Facebook? How can I monetize my traffic? Meet professor Gayle Greene author of Insomniac, a fascinating look into the world of sleep written from an insomniac’s perspective. "A fascinating and unusual look at the world of insomnia and sleep science. Written from the perspective of an insomnia sufferer, this exhaustively researched book critically and thoughtfully examines what we know (or claim to know) about sleep and the treatment of insomnia. Required reading for insomnia sufferers, clinicians treating the disorder, and anyone interested in the science of sleep."--Nicholas Rosenlicht, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine "This work provides a rich account of insomnia, weaving together the personal journey of the author, experiences of other insomniacs, and solid scientific research. No other work on insomnia provides such a fresh perspective, which is also informative, compelling, and entertaining."--Richard Lewis, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Pomona College "This is a very well researched, in-depth book on insomnia, written with much empathy and from the patient's point of view. I would recommend it to all who are plagued by this malady or who professionally try to treat it."--Peter Hauri, author of "No More Sleepless Nights" "Insomniac is an impassioned work--an inspired amalgam of academic and first-hand research, memoir, analysis, and the kind of obsessive brooding we associate with the insomniac state. Much here is fascinating, and much is upsetting; here is a "cri de coeur" from a lifetime insomniac that is sure to appeal to the vast army of fellow insomniacs the world over."--Joyce Carol Oates "As a clinical psychologist afflicted by insomnia for many years, I was delighted to read "Insomniac," Doing so has already helped me and my insomniac clients immensely. Gayle Greene 'gets it' as only another insomniac can. She educates, advises, and comforts with a steady, sympathetic hand."--Timothy Miler, PhD "The good news is that Gayle Greene's book is all you ever need to read on the subject of sleeplessness; the bad news for fellow insomniacs is that reading it --even in bed--will fail to lull you to sleep."--Billy Collins, former Poet Laureate of the U.S. BIO Gayle Greene is Professor of Literature and Women's Studies at Scripps College, Claremont California. She has published books on Shakespeare, women writers, and scientific issues. Her most recent books are "Doris Lessing: The Poetics of Change" and "The Woman Who Knew Too Much: Alice Stewart and the Secrets of Radiation." She is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), a professional medical society for researchers and clinicians, and is the patient representative on the board of the American Insomnia Association, an organization within AASM.
