On Thursday, May 17 at 111 Minna Gallery, many local established and emerging nonprofit leaders will come together for an evening of social networking presented by the Craigslist Foundation, interactive art presented by Exploratorium and SFZero.org, DJs, and an exhibition of photographs taken by blind teenagers from the bold new book by Tony Deifell, Seeing Beyond Sight (Chronicle Books). With its ambitious, seemingly paradoxical premise, Seeing Beyond Sight challenges our definitions of art, vision, and perception and what it really means to see. The salon will be an experiential extension of this unusual art project that will tap all of your senses. Special guests: some of the blind photographers featured in book. BOCA DO RIO: Boca Do Rio music is a dynamic mix of forró, rock, jazz, funk, rap, reggae, and funk, undergirded by the syncopated beat of samba. While it has been argued that Brazilian music in general is marked by a fusion of influences only fitting for a country with such diversity of ethnicities, cultures, and races, Boco's music offers a new take on Brazils 's worldly music. Their music no t only feels like a warm ocean breeze, but also a frenetic carnival vibe of Rio's sambas. FUGA: Members of Fuga! were born and raised in El Paso. The band relocated to the Oakland Bay Area in 2005 where they continue to work with immigrant communities and social causes. Their 2003 record, "Desde la Frontera," became a hit in El Paso, Juárez and cities across the southwest. Fuga! is also working with renowned Grammy-nominated Latin music producer Greg Landau, whose credits include Maldita Vecindad, Patato Valdes, Buena Vista Social Club's Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, Susan Baca, Bobi Cespedes, Dr. Loco, Pete Seeger, Omar Sosa, John Santos, Pancho Quinto, Los Mocosos and David Byrne's record label Luaka Bop. Maisha Productions also welcomes special guest Dj Boima. Malibu native Colbie Calliat's style is thoughful, engaging acoustic pop in tune with Jack Johnson, Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac circa 'Rumours,' which coincindentally, her father, Ken Calliat, co-produced. "A great song," says Caillat, "should lift your heart, warm the soul and make you feel good." Taking her own sound advice, Calliat's debut album 'Coco' is simply crammed full of them. The Kooks (named for the song appearing on David Bowie's 'Hunky Dory') met while attending Brighton Music College in the mid-2000s. Each shared a liking for the Police, the Strokes, the Everly Brothers, and Funkadelic, thus forming the sweet and precocious sounds they have made. Before the end of 2005, the band's 'You Don't Love Me' gave the band its first ever Top 20 hit. Their debut full-length is 'Inside In/Inside Out.'

The San Francisco Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club, a monthly social screening series, returns on Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 pm at Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street at Mint) with Metric: Live at Metropolis, the dynamite concert film that blasts the audience straight into Montreal’s Metropolis concert hall for 90 minutes of high energy, smart and sophisticated rock. “If I could be anywhere on February 12, it would be at Mezzanine dancing to Metric,” says Sean Uyehara of the Film Society. Live at Metropolis captures the Canadian-born New Wave/electro/indie/awesome band's live show, specifically a performance from Montreal’s renowned Metropolis concert hall last fall. Metric’s live shows are a thing to be experienced. The music site PopMatters described the live performance as "a dance-rock blastoff. . . . They're no longer just-sorta political popskotchers; they've become activist musicians with a point to get across." Produced by guitarist Jimmy Shaw and featuring explosive singer Emily Haines, Live at Metropolis also includes music videos of the singles “Monster Hospital,” “Poster of a Girl” and “Empty” from the band's breakout 2005 album Live It Out. Doors open at Mezzanine at 7:00 pm, program starts at 7:30 pm. Complimentary tasting of Kissui Vodka will begin at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $8 at the door or $5 if reserved in advance by emailing info@sf360.org. Must be 21+ to attend. MARY ANN PIETTE: Saving Power at Peak Hours FREE Event - no RSVP or Tickets Required! California needs new, responsive demand-side energy technologies, to ensure that periods of tight electricity supply on the grid don't turn into power outages. Led by Berkeley Lab’s Mary Ann Piette, the California Energy Commission (through its Public Interest Energy Research Program) has established a Demand Response Research Center that addresses two motivations for adopting demand responsiveness: reducing average electricity prices, and preventing future electricity crises. The research seeks to understand factors that influence "what works" in Demand Response. Piette’s team is investigating the two types of demand response – load response and price response – that may influence and reduce the use of peak electric power through automated controls, peak pricing, advanced communications, and other strategies. Would you be willing to consider one or some of these? Please join us to learn more about these developments.
