The Hotel Utah open mic is the epicenter of San Francisco's singer-songwriter community. Its stage attracts performers at all stages of their careers: from seasoned veterans to first-timers. It attracts music fans who know a good thing when they see it. The musicians who come regularly don't come just to get a little "stage time" - they come because of the community that calls Monday at The Utah home - and the musicians that come in for the first time eventually start to come regularly... So come on down this monday, have a beer, bring your guitar if that's your thing, and sit back and enjoy. Feature performer - JOE GUSICH

JOHN MARKS reading & booksigning for "Fangland" Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00 pm at The Booksmith (1644 Haight Street in San Francisco) Television is a bloody business, but nobody could guess how bloody. "Fangland," the new novel by John Marks, reinvents the Dracula story on the set of a television newsmagazine. This inventive reimagining of Bram Stoker’s tale is both a frightening vampire novel in the grand tradition and a biting commentary on the way we live and work now. John Marks is a critically acclaimed novelist and former “60 Minutes” producer. His fiction includes The Wall, named a Notable Book of 1998 by the New York Times, and War Torn, named one of the best novels of 2003 by Publishers Weekly. This Booksmith sponsored event will take place at The Booksmith (1644 Haight Street in San Francisco). For further information, call 415-863-8688 or visit www.booksmith.com If you can't attend this event and would like to order a signed copy of the author's new book, please email or phone our store.

Her new film (coming to SF theaters August 24) is a smart, sexy comedy about how opposites attract during a Parisian getaway for a high-strung New York couple. Delpy, who also wrote, directed and edited the film, plays a French photographer and Adam Goldberg is an American interior designer. After a less than idyllic vacation in Italy, they stop off in Paris for two days, where he has to deal with a new language, an unfamiliar culture, meeting her sexually frank and permissive family, and a bevy of flirtatious ex-boyfriends. We will start the program promptly at 12:00! Due Diligence - what to expect! So an investor has expressed interest, and now wants to conduct "Due Diligence." What exactly does this mean, what do they expect from you, and what are some of the mistakes that can cause major headaches? How capable are the management team & how trustworthy are they? Are the acheievements in their resumes real, or have they been "gilding the lilly?" How does their business fare in Alsop’s formula? Success = Q + I + S + M – P , where Q = Quality – does it provide the level of quality people want? I = Innovation – does it do what people want? S = Smarts – does the company understand how to communicate & deliver to the customer? M = Money – can they attract funding? P = Pain – what is the company asking the customer to go through for the product to work? Are there any legal problems that raise red flags, and can they raise a new round or get to break even before the money runs out? All the above - and more! - will come up during Due Diligence by potential investors, so it's smart to know what they'll be looking for, before they uncover something that can nix the deal.

Augusten Burroughs at Books Inc in the Castro

Where: Books Inc. in the Castro

Date: 2008-05-12 19:30:00

Type:

New York BestSelling author Augusten Burroughs, will be reading selections from his long awaited new novel, "A WOLF AT THE TABLE: A Memoir of my father" at Books Inc in Castro In his first full-length memoir since Dry, Augusten Burroughs, now takes readers into the most unexpected recesses of his psyche to introduce an imposing shadow that has haunted him for most of his life in A WOLF AT THE TABLE: A Memoir of My Father. Burroughs opens old wounds, exposing the rot and chaos of psychological abuse, cruelty, and abandonment he experienced at the hands of his distant, alcoholic father. In some of his earliest memories, Augusten recalls excitedly anticipating his father’s arrival home from work as a philosophy professor in Massachusetts. The young Augusten would create art projects to impress his father and even once dressed like a dog to hopefully garner the same affection the family pet received from the man he admits he loved, at least in the beginning. For his efforts, Augusten was often met at the door with utter disregard, disgust, and sometimes even chilling rebukes. “I was losing against the Arms,” Burroughs writes sadly of his inability to get near enough to his father for a hug. In one moment of desperation, Augusten snuck his father’s clothes from drawers and closets and stuffed them with towels and his own bed sheet to create a headless, footless, scarecrow-like father surrogate. “Tenderly, being mindful not to dislodge the torso from the legs and spoil the illusion, I crawled into bed beside the body, turned on my side and curled against it….It was an acceptable substitute.” Balancing life with a doting, yet unstable mother, an unpredictable older brother, and his volatile father, Augusten agonized over the menacing thought that he may one day grow up to be just like his dad. Amidst the raucous fights between his parents, the suspicious deaths of his childhood pets, and his own angst and despair, Augusten fantasized about killing his father. A WOLF AT THE TABLE is the heart-rending memoir of one man’s struggle to rationalize his turbulent childhood. It is an untapped chapter of Augusten Burroughs’ life, through which he, as a child, fumbles through the space between love and hate, adoration and abhorrence, and life and death. This is Burroughs at his most uncompromising and most vulnerable. Book goes on sale April 29th. We will be giving out tickets that will admit one person per ticket for each book that is sold here AT THIS BOOKS INC. LOCATION ONLY (Market St.). The tickets are numbered, so there will be no need to line up early. People with ticket will receive preferred seating. About Augusten Burroughs: Augusten Burroughs is the New York Times Bestselling Author of Possible Side Effects, Magical Thinking, Dry, Running With Scissors, and Sellevision. He lives in New York City and Western Massachusetts. * * * Books Inc. is a locally owned and operated independent bookseller with 10 locations in California. Books Inc.’s origin dates back to the Gold Rush Days of 1851 when Anton Roman struck it rich in Shasta City, California and set himself up in business selling books. That small bookstore was moved, bought, sold, burned, rebuilt, renamed and became Books Inc., as we know it today, in 1946. Today, with 10 Stores and 200 employees, Books Inc. serves as a shining example that independent bookselling can survive and prosper, even if we must dance among the elephants.
