The Branigan Cultural Center will celebrate the International Day of Dance on Sunday, April 29 with a program from 2 - 5 p.m. in the Shannon Gallery. A wide variety of dance forms will be performed, including Ballet Folklorico, Middle Eastern, and sacred dance. The event is free of charge and will present the culturally diverse dance forms found in Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley. Dance has been happening as long as humans have grouped together. People throughout the centuries and all around the world dance to worship, celebrate, honor, grieve, teach, motivate, bless, and entertain. The International Day of Dance was initiated in 1982 by the International Dance Council, under the auspices of UNESCO. The Councils purpose is to act as a worldwide forum for bringing together international, national and local organizations, and individuals active in dance. The Branigan Cultural Center is located at the north end of the downtown mall with parking at the intersection of Water and Hadley Streets. Dwelling, an exhibit by Albuquerque artist Becky Holtzman, will be on display at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, Friday, July 6 Saturday, Aug.25. Holtzmans sculptures, etchings and mixed media pieces explore the concept of dwelling in homes, in the body, as well as referencing ancestral and genetic knowledge. An opening reception for the artist will be held on July 6 from 5 7 p.m. All exhibits are accessible and free of charge. Holtzman explains, I am interested in the places where human experiences overlap: where biology meets spirituality and where the individuals needs reflect and deflect their culture. It is in leaving home that we are able to arrive at a metaphorical home. Her exhibit, Dwelling, considers the relationship of home and memory, the objects and images that define home for the artist. Holtzman moved to New Mexico 10 years ago and considers the southwest landscape as dear to me as family: warm, red-brown rocks, the slant of the evening light in the desert, a quietness that clarifies the tangles of life. Natural materials including rocks and bones are in her artworks. Holtzman holds a BFA in printmaking from Indiana University. She also studied art in Italy through a University of Georgia program. Her work has been exhibited in Minnesota, Colorado and New Mexico and is included in several private and public collections. She taught art workshops for Somos Familias and was artist-in-residence at La Cueva High School. Concurrently at the Museum is the exhibition, Ansel Adams: The Man Who Captured the Earths Beauty, through Saturday, Aug. 4. Photographer Al Weber will give a free lecture about Adams on Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m. The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 North Main on the Downtown Mall. The Museum is open from 10 am 4 pm Monday through Friday and from 9 am 1 pm on Saturday.
