While most venture firms have grown too large to invest as little as $250,000 to $1 million in a financing round, Startup Capital Ventures targets investments in this range. The firm leverages its investment with unparalleled operations experience from a team of five seasoned professionals. Generally, we target capital efficient companies, such as software, that are generating some revenue and can show a reasonable likelihood of reaching near-term profitability from our investment. Our approach is to build a supportive partnership around an outstanding entrepreneurial team with a clear market vision for its product or service. We focus on investing in strong management teams, not just technologies. We strive to build a supportive working relationship with our portfolio companies based on flexibility, integrity, and patience. John Dean John has 20 years of experience as CEO of five financial services companies. Most recently, from 1993 to 2001, he served as the CEO of Silicon Valley Bank, a leading provider of financial services to early-stage technology companies and venture capital firms. John grew Silicon Valley Bank's market capitalization from $65 million in 1993 to over $3 billion in 2000. Also, he led the creation of the company's own venture investment business, with the launch of the company's first two venture capital funds in 2000. This included a $150 million fund of funds, and a $65 million direct equity fund. In 1997, Business Week recognized John as one of Silicon Valley's top 25 "movers and shakers" and, in 2001, Forbes ranked him as one of the "50 most powerful dealmakers." In 2001, Fortune ranked Silicon Valley Bank, under John's leadership, among the "100 Fastest-Growing Companies" based on growth in revenues, earnings per share, and total market return over three years. John also has many years of experience investing in technology companies. He has served as Managing Director of Tuputele Ventures Fund, LLC, a small private equity fund investing in early-stage technology companies and venture capital funds. He is an investment director for various venture capital firms, both in the U.S. and overseas, including Advanced Technology Venture (ATV), Institutional Venture Fund (IVP), Walden International, Leapfrog Ventures, and Authosis Capital. John serves as an advisor or director of various technology companies, including EzRez Software, H-5 Technologies, and BioImagene. He brings a wide network of industry contacts to the Fund, notably in Silicon Valley and Hawaii. But what about the underground side of music that has such a huge influence on the industry? Terms like math rock, glam, hyphy and new grass permeate the scene. As music and sound continues to evolve, what will our time be remembered for? Which styles were just the flavor of the week, and which are here to stay? Who better to answer these questions than the artists and producers who are creating it? This panel of insiders sounds off on music in the 21st century. PATRICK MCGRATH author event

Where: Booksmith

Date: 2008-04-21 19:00:00

PATRICK MCGRATH reading & booksigning for "Trauma" Monday, April 21 at 7:00 pm Admirers of Patrick McGrath’s work know what to expect from his fiction. The grotesque and the macabre dominate his work. "Trauma" – his new novel – is no exception. In an unreliable first person narrative, this disturbing new novel includes aspects of mental illness and sexual obsession, and in general, a distressing ambiance. All in all, it’s highly recommended and jolly good fun. Patrick McGrath was born in London and grew up near Broadmoor Hospital, where for many years his father was medical superintendent. McGrath’s work is described by some as gothic. He is the author of six novels including "Spider," which was adapted for the screen in 2002; "Dr Haggard's Disease"; and "Asylum," which was shortlisted for the 1996 Guardian Fiction Prize and is currently being made into a feature film. McGrath is the co-editor, with Bradford Morrow, of "The New Gothic." He lives in New York City and London, and is married to British actress Maria Aitken. This Booksmith sponsored event will take place at The Booksmith (1644 Haight Street in San Francisco). For further information, call 415-863-8688 or visit www.booksmith.com If you can't attend this event and would like to order a signed copy of the author's new book, please email or phone our store.
