Gallery Talk with Austrian architect Johannes Fiedler, who will discuss Exterritories, his contribution to the Shrinking Cities Exhibition. Exterritorial communities are the logical continuation of a process that began in the late 20th century—people from expanding countries and cultures filling the voids in receding societies. Fiedler's proposal to create "exterritories" within contracting regions, administered by more economically dynamic nations (e.g., a Chinese economic zone in Halle/Leipzig) exposes such schemes to necessary critiques: who benefits from such arrangements? What is growth, and why assume it is always desirable? How could we conceive a social economy, more democratic and humane than the current entrepreneurial model? And, ultimately, what local efforts can make headway against forces operating on global scales?

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Scott H. Biram plays country, blues and punk music. The Black Diamond Heavies are a trio based out of East Nashville, Tennessee. The music sounds like three gorillas on crack. Most of the material is original music, although covers are sometimes thrown in as tribute to gods, generals, heroes, and vampires such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Lou Reed and Tom Waits. The Heavies are a streamlined tour-ready outfit , and cannot be stopped. Don't even try .

USA, 1953, Stanley Kubrick Tonight, after years of wishing and hoping and working to make it happen, we will screen Stanley Kubrick’s long-suppressed, almost-impossible-to-see first feature /Fear and Desire. /And we will show it in a fully restored 35mm archive print from the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY. Rumor has it that Kubrick tried to destroy all copies of /Fear and Desire, /which he called “inept and pretentious.” Fortunately he failed. Frank Silvera and Paul Mazursky star in this independent, low-budget war drama that Kubrick photographed and co-wrote with Howard Sackler (/The Great White Hope/). It chronicles the exploits of a military patrol behind enemy lines during an unnamed, abstract war. It may not be /2001, /but it contains the seeds of much of the director’s later work. 68 min. /Special admission $12, Cinematheque members $10; no passes, radio winners, or twofers; special thanks to Pat Loughney and Caroline Yeager of the George Eastman House./

Lamb of God plays pure American metal. New Haven, Connecticut's Hatebreed have been featured on MTV2's 'Headbangers Ball' show in addition to stints on such tours as Ozzfest and the Heavyweights of Hardcore. The Canadian sextet Three Inches of Blood evokes a throwback to heavy metal's youthful 1980s heyday. The band's Iron Maiden-like galloping riffs and solos are speeded up to thrash metal tempos, topped with "Dungeons & Dragons" styled lyrics and titles such as 'Destroy the Orcs' and 'Ride Darkhorse, Ride.' Their latest is 'Advance and Vanquish.' Behemoth is an influential polish blackened death metal band.

Hailing from Canada, The Weakerthans is a four-piece folk/rock/punk band. The distorted cry of a lap steel guitar slices through the night. A voice sings with aching sweetness and strength. Caressing melodies are barbed with stinging solos. This is the sound of The Last Town Chorus.
