Her goal is to host benefit concerts that allow teenagers to socialize, release stress and have a good time in a safe environment while simultaneously providing a outlet for local bands to be heard by an eager audience. Mother Brain Productions is hosting it's kick-off Benefit Concert on May 6th at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. When: May 6th, 7:00pm (doors at 6:30) Where: Ashkenaz at 1317 San Pablo Avenue (near Gilman St.) Berkeley, CA Who: Featuring four young local bands: THE LOOK Somewhat of an oddity in San Francisco's local music landscape, the eclectic East Bay quartet, known as The Look is a band with one simple goal in mind: to rock. They placed second in the Northern California Battle of the Bands. They don't rely on any garage scene credibility. They aren't friends with any Oakland hipsters. They're not a metal band out of the depths of Contra Costa County. What they are is a fully functional, highly schooled Rock'N'Roll outfit. Check them out at: www.myspace.com/look THE SYMPTOM is a talented East Bay based teenage punk/alternative/rock band combining the influences of Anti-Flag, Misfits, and The Matches to name a few. Together since middle school, they now attend Albany and Berkeley High. They are currently working on a full length album and have great new material popping up frequently. Check them out at: www.myspace.com/thesymptomband THE HAPPY ADAMS, is a radical Berkeley High band whose influences include Pavement, Love as Laughter and The Weakerthans. Their intriguing lyrics and infectious riffs will captivate and entangle you in a euphonious whirlwind. They have graced venues such as Blakes and the basements and backyards of Bay Area suburbia. check out their myspace at: www.myspace.com/thehappyadams TRICKY FISH is an Albany High indie band whose whacky yet insightful lyrics and catchy harmonies will conjure an uncontrollable foot tapping at the least. Tickets are being sold at Mod Lang Records (6328 Fairmount Ave. on the outskirts of the El Cerrito Plaza) or at www.ashkenaz.com For more information visit www.myspace.com/motherbrainproductions

GOD ON TRIAL: Dispatches from America's Religious Battlefields. Political activist, draft resister, and civil rights attorney Peter Irons talks with Jeffrey Brand, Dean of the USF Law School. Tuesday May 22 7:30 pm At the Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in Berkeley $5 at the door; no one turned away for lack of funds. For information e-mail lewis@litminds.org This event is organized by LitMinds.org. Eminent civil rights attorney, draft resister, political activist, and legal scholar Peter Irons will be in conversation with Jeffrey Brand, Dean of the USF Law School, to talk about his new book God On Trial: Dispatches from America's Religious Battlefields. The event will be introduced by Lewis Klausner of LitMinds.org. Over the past two decades, federal courts have become contentious battlefields in America’s growing religious wars. Since 1989, five momentous court cases testing the principles of separation of Church and State have divided communities—and the nation. Peter Irons, a noted constitutional scholar, lawyer, and author of the bestselling May It Please the Court, provides detailed and penetrating accounts of these cases. He includes first-person monologues from both sides of each case that reveal the passions and rationales at work in these conflicts. Irons shows that when the courts debate issues like the public display of a cross or the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance they founder and drift for lack of clear legal standards.

Eunyee Koh, Interface Ecology Lab - Texas A&M Generating Views of the Buzz: Browsing Popular Media and Authoring using Mixed-Initiative Composition ABSTRACT: combinFormation's mixed-initiative composition space enables system agents and humans to engage in processes of finding relevant information, and forming and authoring collections. Previously, the system was developed and utilized to support information discovery. The efficacy of the system for supporting creativity has been established in some contexts. We present combinFormation as a tool for browsing popular media and authoring personal collections. Yahoo Buzz is an popular media collection of top search queries, categorized into genres such as actors, music and sports. Existing interfaces limit the human participant to only viewing results of a single search at any given time. This paper presents a new system structure which interleaves multiple searches concurrently in a round-robin manner, enabling participants to concurrently explore and connect diverse result sets, which, in aggregate, may consist of hundreds of documents. The mixed-initiative composition space serves as a media interface for combining search results and authoring personal collections. Evaluation using the Buzz demonstrated participants ability to browse more diverse information using combinFormation than with a typical browser. They experienced browsing and authoring as easier and more entertaining. Results have implications for a broad range of use contexts in which combined views of the results of multiple searches need to be authored, including research scenarios, as well as popular media. BIOGRAPHY: Eunyee Koh is a Ph.D. candidate in the computer science department at Texas A&M University. Her research area includes human computer interaction and information retrieval. Her recent research work focuses on development and evaluation of the information system named combinFormation (http://ecologylab.cs.tamu.edu/combinFormation/). The research results in publishing papers in ACM Multimedia, SIGIR, ACM Document Engineering, Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL), and European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL) . She was a reviewer for IEEE transactions on Human-Centered Computing and ACM Computer Human Interaction. In addition, she is actively involved in volunteering and mentoring work in the women in computer science group, and also she was a student volunteer in various conferences such as the JCDL, ACM CHI, and SIGIR.

(Ta'am-e gilas). A man with a hangdog face circles the scrubby outskirts of Tehran in a dust-colored Range Rover, looking for someone to do a job. We're left in extended suspense as to the nature of his proposition; when at last we learn what the driver, Mr. Badii, wants—to die—his motivation is never explained, his anguish never explored. Instead the film gives us afternoon light and lengthening shadows, the calling of crows, and a series of conversations between Mr. Badii and his passengers: a callow Kurdish soldier, an Afghan seminarian, and a Turkish taxidermist relentless in his argument for life. Taste of Cherry, which shared the Palme d'or at Cannes, is both formally studied and freighted with emotion in its contemplation of the gaps and connections between driver and passenger, shot and reverse shot, viewer and viewed. "Do you want to close your eyes?" asks the taxidermist. After the fadeout comes a kind of answer. —Juliet Clark • Written by Kiarostami. Photographed by Homayon Payvar. PROGRAM: Mozart / Serenata Notturna Gordon Chin / Violin Concerto Formosa Seasons, Cho-Liang Lin, Violin Elgar / Serenade for Strings Mozart / Symphony No. 29 The New Century Chamber Orchestra (www.ncco.org), founded in 1992, looks for fresh, exciting new ways to present classical music in the San Francisco Bay Area by combining performances of extraordinary quality with innovative programming. The Music Director chooses the programs and guides the artistic vision, but the seventeen members of the orchestra perform without a conductor. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power. The NCCO also provides musical education to over 2,000 students annually in Bay Area elementary schools through intimate in-classroom presentations, and has released three compact discs since 1996, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. About the Guest Concertmaster Taiwanese-American violinist Cho-Liang Lin is lauded the world over for the eloquence of his playing and for the superb musicianship that marks his performances. Renowned for appearances as a soloist with major orchestras, he is also frequently heard in recital and in chamber music. Musical America named Mr. Lin its Instrumentalist of the Year in 2000. Born in Taiwan in 1960, Cho-Liang Lin began his violin lessons when he was 5 years old. At the age of 12, he went to Sydney to continue his musical studies. His early teachers include Sylvia Lee and Robert Pikler. Inspired by an encounter with Itzhak Perlman while in Sydney, he arrived in New York in 1975 to audition for Mr. Perlman's teacher, the late Dorothy DeLay, at the Juilliard School. Within two years of his enrollment, Mr. Lin won the first Queen Sofia Violin Competition in Madrid and his concert career was soon launched. He has been a member of the Juilliard faculty since 1991 and resides in New York with his wife and daughter. During the current year, Mr. Lin continues his wide-ranging musical activities. Performing on four continents, he appears as soloist with orchestras in Norway, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. Apart from conventional repertoire, Mr. Lin continues his advocacy for contemporary music by presenting the world premiere of Taiwanese composer Gordon Chin's Double Concerto with cellist Felix Fan with the San Diego Symphony conducted by Jahja Ling as well as Chinese composer Bright Sheng's Three Fantasies at the Library of Congress with pianist Andre-Michel Schub. This summer, he will perform at festivals in Aspen, Ravinia, Santa Fe and Naantali, Finland. As artistic director of La Jolla SummerFest for the sixth summer, the Los Angeles Times stated that Mr. Lin "has put together another bracing and provocative series." In his capacity as music director, he has helped commission and premiere works by Chen Yi, Chick Corea, Philip Glass, John Harbison, Mark O'Connor, Esa-Pekka Salonen among others. As a solo artist, he has premiered concerti by Tan Dun, Joel Hoffman, Christopher Rouse, Elie Siegmeister, Bright Sheng, George Tsontakis, George Walker and Chen Yi.

Free and open to the public, followed at 4pm with a Social Jam that includes refreshments - and beer. It would be helpful if you mark attending/watching above. Andrew Keen CULT OF THE AMATEUR: How Today's Internet is killing our culture ABSTRACT: In its annual “person of the year” issue, Time Magazine reflected a shift in our culture by electing “YOU” in place of the traditional leaders and thinkers such as FDR, Ghandi or Martin Luther King, Jr. Thanks to the democratization of the internet and what is now known as Web 2.0, anyone with a computer is given equal footing and the ability to be heard. In today’s self-broadcasting world, if you have an opinion, you can publish a blog, post a video on YouTube?, or alter an entry on Wikipedia. But is this really such a good thing? Audiocafe.com founder and Silicon Valley insider Andrew Keen describes how Web 2.0 threatens our culture’s moral and aesthetic standards. What’s more, Keen argues the deluge of free, user-generated content is threatening the very viability of our traditional media and our cultural institutions. Our professional newspapers, magazines, music and movies are being overtaken by an avalanche of amateur, user-generated free content. Advertising revenue is being siphoned off by free classified ads on sites like Craig’s list; television networks are under attack from free, user-generated programming on YouTube? and the like; file-sharing and digital piracy have devastated the multibillion-dollar music business and threaten to undermine our movie industry. Worse, Keen claims, our “cut-and-paste” online culture—in which intellectual property is freely swapped, downloaded, remashed, and aggregated—threatens over 200 years of copyright protection and intellectual property rights, robbing artists, authors, journalists, musicians, editors, and producers of the fruits of their creative labors. BIOGRAPHY: The San Francisco Chronicle wrote “every good movement needs a contrarian. Web 2.0 has Andrew Keen.” Andrew is indeed the leading critic of today’s Internet and his CULT OF THE AMATEUR is the first book that critically exposes the consequences of the Web 2.0 revolution. Andrew was educated at London University, where he got a First Class degree in History. Today, he is host of afterTV.com and regularly appears on television and radio. His writing can be found on ZDNet.com and Britannica.com, and in traditional publications like the Weekly Standard, Fast Company and Forbes.

Where: Cody's Books

Date: 2008-05-16 19:00:00

As the global food crisis unfolds around us, Raj Patel conducts a wide-ranging investigation. What he uncovers is shocking—the real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa, an epidemic of farmer suicides, and the false choices and conveniences in supermarkets. Yet he also finds hope—in international resistance movements working to create a more democratic, sustainable, and joyful food system. From seed to store to plate, STUFFED AND STARVED explains the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance. Raj Patel, former policy analyst for Food First, a leading food think tank, is a visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley Center for African Studies. He has written for the Los Angeles Times and the Guardian, and though he has worked for the World Bank, WTO, and the UN, he's also been tear-gassed on four continents protesting them. "Patel's broad treatment helps the layman connect the dots, as well as hear the voices of those who occupy the lower rungs of the global food chain." -Time Magazine "One of the most dazzling books I've read in a very long time. The product of a brilliant mind and a gift to a world hungering for justice." -Naomi Klein http://www.stuffedandstarved.org/

The Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium of the Berkeley Center for New Media announces: Giant Robot Architecture Greg Lynn, UCLA & Angewandte, Vienna Monday, Feb 4, 7:30-9:00pm ** Note Special Location: Berkeley Art Museum Theater ** Enter on Dwight Ave: http://bampfa.berkeley.edu/visit/visitor ATC Lectures are free and open to the public ------------------------------------------------------ Robots. In my office, my staff keeps asking for more new machines, and every time I get a new machine, I fire two or three people. By extrapolation, in the next few years I will be sitting in an office by myself with a bunch of robots. We have is a very large CNC (computer numerically controlled) cutting machine, a laser cutter, a 3d printer, and soon we will have a robotic articulated arm. All of these things let us do studies of models, which are very important to architects, but what they also let us do is learn machine language. We spend more and more time talking to machines; speaking their language. It is very easy for us to go to any country that has an automobile industry or an aircraft industry and give their machines instructions and do things with these large machines at an architectural scale that is very perfunctory and affordable. The spread of machine language and programming is more significant than the Anglicization of the world. Learning to talk to robots is very important to my field of design. ------------------------------------------------------ Greg Lynn is a leading pioneer at the intersection of computing, design, and architecture. His architectural designs have been exhibited in both architecture and art museums including the 2000 Venice Biennale of Architecture where he represented the United States in the American Pavilion. His work is in the permanent collections of CCA, SFMoMA, and MoMA and has been exhibited at the Pompidou, Beyeler, Cooper Hewitt, MAK, MoCA, NAI, Carnegie, ICA and Secession museums among others. In addition to his architectural work, his Alessi "Supple" Mocha Cups and his Vitra "Ravioli" Chair are in production and have been inducted into the Museum of Modern Art's Permanent Collection. He received the American Academy of Arts & Letters Architecture Award in 2003. In 2002, he left his position as the Professor of Spatial Conception and Exploration at the ETHZ (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) and became an Ordentlicher University Professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He is studio professor of Architecture at UCLA and the Davenport Visiting Professor at Yale University. Greg Lynn holds degrees in architecture and philosophy and received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Academy of Fine Arts & Design in Bratislava. In 2001, Time Magazine named him one of 100 of the most innovative people in the world for the 21st century. In 2005, Forbes Magazine named him one of the ten most influential living architects. http://www.glform.com ------------------------------------------------------ ATC Primary Sponsors: Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM), Center for Information Technology in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), College of Engineering Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IDS), and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. The company's tour to New York's P.S. 122 was met with critical acclaim. And foolsFURY's sensational "The Turn of the Screw" was recognized as "the Best of the SF Fringe." "Monster in the Dark" tells the horrifying and darkly humorous tale about an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flood that threatens a peculiar and bizarrely familiar society. It is a world ruled by 'the Structure,' a shadowy government that monitors its citizens from beneath black umbrellas and within hidden towers. It is a place where business literally consumes you, Faith and Anxiety are preached daily on street corners, and people jump from the sky with the same frequency as rain. Life and society are threatened by a watery natural disaster, and the people of "Monster in the Dark" are challenged to redefine themselves and others; who can be trusted, who is necessary, and what is the greatest resource needed to survive. "Monster in the Dark" is the culmination of a two-year theatrical exploration in foolsFURY's style of "sheer kinetic energy and rigorous physical vocabulary" (SF Bay Guardian). Created by foolsFURY company members under the direction of Ben Yalom and in collaboration with novelist/playwright Doug Dorst, this production, like the best of foolsFURY’s work, is both hilarious and deeply disturbing.

Special Lecture sponsored by the UC Berkeley School of Information, the Berkeley Center for New Media, and the Berkeley Institute of Design Urban sensing systems based on mobile phones offer unprecedented observational capacity at the scale of the individual; at they same time they are remarkably scalable and affordable given the wide proliferation of cellular phone infrastructure and consumer devices that incorporate digital imagers, bluetooth short-range radios, and location services such as GPS . Many of the architectural lessons learned through the design and deployment of environmental sensing systems appear applicable to urban sensing as well. As with environmental sensing, multiscale data and models are essential to provide interpretive context for individual data streams, and mobility is essential to achieve scalability and coverage. Moreover in-network and decentralized processing will be critical to support privacy and personal control. These systems promise to become a very effective "make a case" technology to address a range of civic concerns, from public health to safety and sustainability…at the same time that they will push even further on our societies concept of privacy and private space. In this talk I will draw upon work-in-progress at the Center for Embedded Sensing. Deborah Estrin (Ph.D. MIT, 1985; BSEE UCB, 1980) is a Professor of Computer Science, holds the Jon Postel Chair in Computer Networks, and is Founding Director of the NSF-funded Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS). CENS mission is to explore and develop innovative, application-focused, distributed sensing systems, from ecosystems to human systems. Deborah’s earlier work focused on Internet scaling, including inter-domain and multicast routing. Since the late 90's her work has focused on multi-disciplinary, experimental-systems research and development as applied to a variety of environmental monitoring challenges. Most recently this work includes participatory-sensing systems, at the personal and community level, leveraging the location, acoustic, image, and attached-sensor data streams increasingly available from mobile phones.

Tonight's feature is TODD SHIPLEY, who will perform in the 6th slot. All performers are welcome to participate in this event that has produced some of our brightest performers, including: Shawn Colvin, Dana Carvey, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Patrick Landeza. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS! One unique aspect of our Open Mic is that, unlike those held in noisy bars where people show up in spite of the fact that there's live music, you will be playing to a supportive group of friends and performers who are actually listening!!! The sign-up begins at 7:30, when the doors open. However, people with advance tickets get let in first, so they have first dibs on the list. People often start lining up as early as 7, some even come before 7 to get an advance ticket before the box office closes (at 7). Tickets are $4.50 in advance, $5.50 at the door, even if you are performing. EXCEPTION: Any performer showing up with a paying, non-performing member of the audience plays for free!!! Note: you must show up together to take advantage of this offer. Solo performers get to play one song, groups get to play two songs. Management reserves the right to occasionally award a performer with an extra song, for any reason management deems appropriate. BONUS: Anyone, performers and audience alike, staying until the end of the night is entitled to a FREE TICKET to an upcoming Freight show of their choice. This is a great deal, considering the Freight's normal ticket prices. Shows that are sold out or close to being sold out are excluded from this offer.

In this work of hip hop theater, Dan Wolf, the great grand nephew of Ludwig Wolf (writer of Hamburg, Germanys most famous song, Een echt Hamborger Jung), returns to Hamburg to make a film about his family. Using tatter found in his grandmothers basementa picture of two dockworkers, a costume, a long letter from his grandfatherWolf links his Jewish past with his present search for self. Through a pastiche of rhyme, dialogue, and song we are led from Hamburg to Shanghai, New York and San Francisco through anti-Semitism, the assimilation of Jewish culture, and the rediscovery of an artistic legacy. The JCCs performance mixes select scenes from the play with excerpt from the film, providing a unique cross-medium journey that is not to be missed. A Q&A will follow the show. When people ask me why I do what I do I reply Its in my blood. I am Leopold and Ludwig and James and Donut. German and Jewish. Strong and liberated. Feared and oppressed. A seeker of beauty, of truth, and of tradition, both theatrical and Jewish. Dan WolfEvent submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of JCCEB.
