$5 / Season $50 La Vie en Rose Dir: Olivier Dahan, France, 2007, 142 min, PG-13 Marion Cotillard and Gérard Depardieu star in this exploration of the life and career of the famous French singer, Edith Piaf, whose passion for her music saw her through a life filled with tragedy. Raised in poverty, Edith Piaf's magical voice and her passionate romances and friendships with some of the most eccentric personalities of her generation -- Yves Montand, Marcel Cerdan, Jean Cocteau, Charles Aznavour, Marlene Dietrich, and others -- made the "Little Sparrow" a star all around the world. From her forlorn childhood in a brothel to her big break at a nightclub and her premature death at the age of 47, director Olivier Dahan creates a loving portrait of the legendary chanteuse. In French with English subtitles.

Hi De Ho and Mo'. HI-DE-HO! Experience a night at the Cotton Club where swing is king and jive is alive. The legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra and The Ink Spots will have you bouncing, swaying, and singing. Don't miss this night of great entertainment. The whole audience bouncing and swaying to the irresistible rhythm. Everybody singing HI-DE-HO! They're echoing the King himself, Cab Calloway, as he thrusts his baton into the air, and in his Zoot Suit, jumps, twirls and signals to the band to begin another joyous chorus. Who could forget the incredible sounds and imagery of Cab Calloway and his hot Jazz Orchestra! When you speak of the internationally famous Ink Spots, you're really talking about a "household name". Although there have been several changes and replacements throughout the years, as all of the original members have passed away (The FOUR INK SPOTS originated in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1932), the UNIQUE SOUND which made them famous is still alive, through JIM NABBIE who joined the group in 1945 to replace Bill Kenny. JIM NABBIE passed away suddenly in September 1992 and has been replaced by GRANT KITCHINGS. Shortly before Jim Nabbie's untimely death, he named GRANT KITCHINGS as his successor as lead tenor. Grant was not immediately available but was able to rejoin the group in February 1995. He was welcomed enthusiastically by The Ink Spots and audiences alike.

$5 / Season $50 The Host (Gwoemul) Dir: Joon-ho Bong, S Korea, 2006,119 min, R Seoul's River Han is the watery birthplace of a giant mutant creature determined to destroy the city and devour all of its residents. The film’s main character, Hie-bong, is a man in his late 60s who lives with his small family, owns a snack bar, and leads an ordinary life… until he finds himself intermingled with this hungry creature in a most unfortunate way--his granddaughter, Hyun-seo, is stolen away by the murky beast. The family agonizes over the loss of Hyun-seo until they receive a scratchy cell phone call from inside the creature’s lair from Hyun-seo herself. After discovering that she’s alive, the family bands together and is determined to make their way through the labyrinth to save the girl. The action is pure high camp, a mix of fear and humor that hits a few slap-sticky skids along the way. The effects are uber-cool (thanks to the team that gave us the Lord of the Rings movies), and offers an interesting mix of suspense, comedy, and political satire.

The Beat that My Heart Skipped

FLICS prents this film. Admission is $4. Twenty-eight-year-old Tom leads a life that might be termed as criminal. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of his father, who made his money from dirty, and sometimes brutal, real estate deals. Tom is a pretty hard-boiled guy but also strangely considerate as far as his father is concerned. Somehow he appears to have arrived at a critical juncture in his life when a chance encounter prompts him to take up the piano and become a concert pianist, like his mother. He senses that this might be his final opportunity to take back his life. His piano teacher is a Chinese piano virtuoso who has recently come to live in France. She doesn't speak a lick of French so music becomes the only language they have in common. Before long, Jacques' bid to be a better person means that he begins to yearn for true love. But, when he finally has the chance of winning his best friend's wife, his passion only succeeds in scaring her. And then, one day, his dubious past comes to light... how do the French do it?? & why can't American film makers come close? this is a remake of the film "Fingers" released in the '70's directed by James Toback & starred Harvey Keitel. this remake is a beautifully told story that grabs you from the beginning & only lets go at the very satisfying end. brilliant acting by all, most notably Romain Duris. briefly, it is a study in the psychological make-up of a late 20's macho guy torn between his artistic nature inherited from his concert pianist mother & his real estate thug of a father. Duris walks/acts on a very high wire balancing the 2 sides & has the audience rooting for his desire to overcome his distaste for the seamy business he has "inherited" from his father. if 1 were to see only 1 film this summer, i would highly recommend this film.
