As the singer, guitarist and main songwriter of Australia's Men at Work, Colin Hay was responsible for penning several of the quirkiest pop hits of the early '80s. Hay's recorded seven solo efforts, in addition to contributing tracks to television shows like 'Judging Amy,' 'Dawson's Creek' and 'Scrubs.' Traveling the world, Colin Hay continues to win audiences with moving lyrics and hilarious insights into an absolutely unique career and life. Megan Slankard has got the edge of Alanis Morrisette, the rhythm of Ani DiFranco, the soul of Patty Griffin and the cute girl-next-door voice of Lisa Loeb. In her sharp, punchy, original tunes, she weaves together her passionate, gorgeous and bluesy voice.

August 31 “MiDNiTES FOR MANiACS” presents “SWITCHING SCHOOLS SUCKS” TRIPLE FEATURE Hosted By Jesse Hawthorne Ficks ALL THREE FILMS for only $10.00! There was nothing worse then having to transfer to a new high skool. In fact, it was so traumatizing that a whole teen genre was created to try and help kids through this right of passage. F 7:30p: Pump Up The Volume Directed by Allan Moyle (TIMES SQUARE); Containing: Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis, Cheryl Pollak, Seth Green, Ahmet Zappa; 1990, 105 min. We kick off the evening with Christian Slater giving the performance of his career as an angry young man who’s forced to move to Arizona during his senior year. Out of total boredom, he starts his own pirate radio show with the pseudonym of Hard Harry. But as his ranting and raving grows more subversive, more students and adults start to pay attention. This Grunge classic was a prediction as well as a wake up call to the apathetic youth of the 1990’s. And the film is as relevant today as it was 17 years ago. If you are looking for the film that defined the 1990’s, dust off your flannel shirt, don’t comb your hair and be prepared to “talk hard” to some bitchin’ songs by The Pixies, Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, Leonard Cohen, and The Decendents! Preceeded by some totally awesome teen trailers. 9:45p: Footloose Directed by Herbert Ross; Containing: Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow, Diane Wiest, Chris Penn, Sarah Jessica Parker 1984, 107 min. NEW 35MM PRINT! Tuff times continue for transfer students as Kevin Bacon plays Ren, a big city kid who’s forced to move from Chicago to a West coast hick town, only to find it so repressed that they’ve banned Rock n’ Roll and dancing entirely! (The filmmakers wanted repressed realism, so they filmed in American Fork, Utah.) This New-Wave adrenaline-fest showcases some of the most memorable mainstream movie moments of the 1980’s. Come on now, who doesn’t want to be dancing in the Castro Theatre aisles to Kenny Loggins?! Midnite: Massacre at Central High Directed by Rene Daalder; Containing: Derrel Maury, Andrew Stevens, Robert Carradine, Kimberly Beck, Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith; 1976, 87min. Our evening concludes with one of the most notorious Teensploitation films of the 1970’s. This rarely seen socially aware “meanie” layed the groundwork for the onlslaught of campus revenge flicks, that thrived throughout the 1980’s. After David transfers to his new high skool, he’s threatened by a gang of bullies who almost paralyze him. David reacts by forming his own gang (complied of Geeks & Losers) and starts an all-out campus war. You’ve probably seen the mainstream remakes of this film (HEATHERS and REVENGE OF THE NERDS) but this exploitative-treasure sheds some very serious social commentary on our class structures on high school campuses, which seems to be quite relevant today, 30 years later. EXTREMELY RARE PRINT. NOT AVAILABLE ON DVD! Preceeded by some of scariest teen trailers ever! Music Meets Movies at the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival in Distinctive Live & Onstage Events. Death’s wheels are driven by the last sinner to die before year’s end in master Swedish director Victor Sjöström’s surrealistic silent film classic, which rides again with a new score composed and performed live by local music icon Jonathan Richman. One of the most highly regarded films of the silent era, Victor Sjöström’s The Phantom Carriage rides again with a new score composed and presented live by local icon Jonathan Richman. Based on Selma Lagerlöf’s rendition of a Swedish folktale, this moody, surrealistic spooker takes its title from Death’s favorite mode of transportation, which must be driven by the last sinner to die before year’s end. Sjöström both directs and stars in the film, fashioning a supernatural morality tale replete with atmospheric lighting and superimposition effects that were ahead of their time in 1921 and still chill today. He plays David Holm, a belligerent drunkard who must contend with past misdeeds of pettiness and alcoholism as he gathers the souls of the dead. Will he roam the roads forever as a ghostly driver or achieve salvation beyond Death’s spectre? This suspenseful, visually arresting classic was shot by masterful cinematographer Julius Jaenzon and will be screened in a gorgeous new 35mm print specially created for world cinema distributor Janus Films’s 50-year anniversary. Just as special is beloved singer/songwriter Richman’s wildly imaginative score, which he will perform live in the suitably majestic Castro Theatre as Sjöström’s dark tale unfolds in all its silent glory. Richman, who led seminal ’70s band the Modern Lovers and serenaded Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz in There’s Something About Mary, selected The Phantom Carriage from a number of silent-era contenders for its timeless themes: No bad deed goes unpunished, and Death has a wicked sense of humor. The Phantom Carriage with Jonathan Richman Friday, April 27 at 7:00 pm Castro Theatre Tickets: $20 general/$15 San Francisco Film Society members Part of the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 26 – May 10) For tickets, visit www.sffs.org or call 925.866.9559. The 50th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 26 – May 10) features several special film programs with live musical accompaniment at the historic Castro Theatre. From iconic rocker Jonathan Richman debuting an original score for a 1921 silent Swedish classic to a 13-piece ensemble performing to Guy Maddin’s latest avant-garde feature narrated live by Joan Chen, the International seeks to let audiences experience film in new ways.

Singer/songwriter/producer, Butch Walker, was a member of the band Marvelous 3 before leaving to produce hit records for artists such as The Donnas, Hot Hot Heat and SR-71. He couldn't stay behind the scenes for long and embarked on a solo career in 2000. Much like his work with Marvelous 3, Walker's solo work embodies his anti-conformist attitude and playful rock & roll swagger. His riff-based sound makes for fun and energetic '70s-inspired rock. His music blends classic rock and modern power pop with clever lyrics that touch on seamy side of fame and the music industry. Plus Jesse Malin
