Synergy: 6th Annual Sustainable Living Conference

Where: Evergreen College

Date: 2007-04-20 00:00:00

Type:

[description of last year's event]: Synergy: The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects. (From Greek sunergia: cooperation and from sunergos: working together.) Why Synergy? We believe that it is vital to look at sustainability beyond any one specialized area of interest. That’s why we’ve chosen to create a sustainability event that combines issues of culture, design, ecology, agriculture and social justice (themes that have conventionally been looked at in isolation). By recognizing the interconnectedness of these issues, we can work beyond our individual interests to create a vision, and ultimately a model of sustainability. What is Synergy? The Synergy conference is a free four-day event that takes place in the late winter at The Evergreen State College. It is paid for by TESC student activities fees and supported by donations, as well as by many academic programs and community organizations. It was created by a diverse coalition of students in a collective effort to create a holistic learning experience and a model for a sustainable world.

Jim McAdams and was produced under the umbrella of the Olympia Strange Music Society, which Arrington de Dionyso had created earlier in the same year. While Mr. McAdams gladly served as a conduit for the very first event, the festival began through a series of e-mails by fringe music artists from around North America who actively wished to play in Olympia. Thus it could be argued that the first festival really founded itself. Since it's magical beginnings as a group vision on internet mailing lists, the Olympia Experimental Music Festival has been curated by L. Jim McAdams, Arrington de Dionyso, Aerick Duckhugger, Ashley Shomo, Eric Ostrowski, Michael Griffin, Harlan Mark Vale, and Dick Metcalfe (who was also responsible for starting the festival's first ever website). This years chief organizer is Domenica Clark. The festival continues to move forward every year on the fervent belief that while Olympia is certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there are other genres of very visceral music that were and continue to be underrepresented in the "scene".

On Monday, May 5, the Green Car Journey travels from Olympia to Spokane where the Tango is made. The Tango is owned by George Clooney, Sergey Brin (Google co-founder), and others. From Spokane, we head to Seattle to visit the Green Car Company and MC Electric Vehicles. At the Green Car Company, owner Greg Rock will teach "Transportation 101". The Green Car Company has Volvos and Mercedes that run on biodiesel. They also have ultra-efficient Smart Cars, and Zap Cars and Bikes. If we’re lucky, we’ll get to see a Myers electric car, which is freeway capable, as is the Tango. MC Electric Vehicles, sells various brands of neighborhood electric vehicles, including IT by Dynasty, ZENN, and EXV. From Seattle, we’ll go to Vancouver to see some fuel cell demos.
